Gentry Local News Video
I hope he can redshirt, because with his family coaching background he'll soak up the playbook and I think he'll be a star at Michigan. Very excited to see his progress.
Hope you're right. One thing we know for certain: starting in 2016, whoever wins the QB job will have earned it by besting top-flight competition. So whether it's Gentry, Malzone, Morris, Speight, O'Korn, or even Peters or Vic Viramontes, it's going to be a really good player who has won the job over other really good players.
big fan already
Classy young man with dreams of the League...i hope he makes them all come true and UM is the launching pad!
for a 17 yr old, and for a big guy he is extremely athletic. i have a feeling he's going to be seeing a lot of the field in the next few years.
Yeah, he is going to be great at Michigan.
Gentry is well spoken and he seems to have a good head on his (very tall) shoulders. Not that a pipeline to New Mexico would be a world changer, but FWIW, for the next 4-5 years Michigan will rival Texas as the favorite out-of-state power 5 program—especially given the head-to-head nature of Gentry's recruitment.

Carl Ichan can imagine it too. This is as excited as he gets.
O'Korn, Morris, Malzone, Gentry, or Peters/Speight. Damn that's a good list. The QB competition next year is going to be amazing.
Speight maybe - there are some rumors swirling about that he's a transfer candidate. Malzone, however, doesn't seem like someone who will give up a spot that easy. Kid worked his ass off for that Michigan offer and he seemed to be a leader at Brother Rice. Of course college football is a whole different beast, but he seems to be someone to keep an eye out for. He may not be as tall or fast as some of the other QBs on the roster, but he seems to have that underdog mentality that can be terrifying.
It is stunning to me how many people have already written Malzone off. He was on campus for about 6 minutes before being thrown into the starting QB competition as a true freshman early enrollee. For much of the spring practice period, rumors kept leaking out about how Malzone looked best and could take the job. This ahead of an Army All-American and an Elite 11 4*/5*. He apparently easily passed the former, and ended up neck and neck with the latter. The spring game comes along, he looks more poised than any true freshman deserves to be. Throws a decent long ball that Ways should have pulled in, instead ends up in Watson's hands as an INT. Scrambles out of trouble and throws a dart to Winovich who looks hopelessly unable to catch anything. Morgan makes a great play on a poor decision by Malzone. Arm isn't the strongest, sure. Throws a screen that Lewis was in the area on and everyone counts that as a pick - it ganed like 12 yards.
All along he looked in command of the huddle, knew the offense, didn't look overly confused, didn't look out of place. Sure Harbaugh said Morris won the day. But I thought it was a great start for an early enrollee QB. Understanding the offense, the defense, and knowing where to go with the football are so much more important thatn arm strength. Malzone seems to have that and poise - he can certainly be the starter here someday.
Wow this kid has winner written all over him. Very mature demeanor. I've been really excited about Peters and Viceous Vic lately... sigh. Safe to say we'll be stacked at QB in the next two-three years.

They've only got 3 QB's competing for the starting position. meh.
Depending upon which Michigan QB wins the starting position this fall, if it's anyone other than Rudock, then that QB (Gentry? Malzone? Morris? Speight?) will go into the fall of '16 having to compete with Peters, Vicious Vic, and O'Korn, plus every QB still left standing from the '15 roster.
Now that is competition!
Now that is Maize colored glasses for you.
They've got 3 that are not only competing to start, but each one has been or could be a legitimate Heisman contender. No way we get 5-6 Heisman contenders. The only way you could upgrade from OSU's QB situation is if we had 3 that were that good but more staggered over the classes to get a run of 12 solid years of QB play shark-teeth style.

Having 2 years under Harbaugh before he probably will compete for the starting spot, but could be a RS 3 year starter!
Guy is 6'6" running a 4.6 forty....imagine what he'll be like after a few years of bulking up! BEAST!

I remember reading, here on the board not long ago, some discussion about him converting to TE if things didn't work out for him. I just laughed and kept silent. This kid isn't playing anything outside of QB and I'm betting takes the starting job directly after this season. You're 6'7, 240, run a 4.5-4.6 40 and can make any throw on the field? And then, of course, Harbaugh? I'm much more optimistic about him than any other QB we've got.

His voice sounds like his T-levels are through the roof.
He does look good. The only knock on his recruiting as I recall was that the NM prep ranks aren't particularly competitive, so scouts were worried that he might just be a big fish in a small pond. On the other hand, it's not his fault that he doesn't live in a football powerhouse state. If the kid rises in the ranks among the other QB prospects on our roster, then that would speak volumes in and of itself. Pretty excited about our QB situation for the 2017 season and beyond.

Besides Rudock I think Gentry probably has the best chance of any significant playing time this year. His athleticism and specifically his ability to run will set him apart and he has a very similar skill set to Colin Kaepernik. I'd expect to see some read option packages to be installed specifically to take advantage of this.
Also, look at next years roster. O'Korn (rs JR), Gentry (rs FR/SO), Morris (SR), Malzone (rs FR), Speight (rs JR), Peters and Viramontes. If Shane doesn't pan out you essentially will have 1 QB with game experience, who hasn't played in over a year. No way in hell this staff will allow that to happen. I'm hopeful that Morris turns the corner but I don't think that it is likely. In that event Gentry will be the next up. Of course it would be preferable if he redshirts but it looks like we're gonna need him and his 1st round measurables.
I don't think that matters much in this case. Considering that he's been injured, rumored to be a potential transfer. We'll have scholly 7 QB's on the roster next year and probably 2 more incoming for 2017. Competition will be fierce. Once we have someone assert themselves as 1a & 1b, some guys will have to switch positions or transfer if they want to see playing time.

It is nice to have an embarrassment of riches but don't sleep on O'Korn. I believe he wins the job next year with Gentry as backup.
JH has a complicated offense that is largely designed to make the post-snap reads simple.
I suspect his height, running ability and arm strength make the first year integration into the offense easier because JH can scheme for him to make only 1 or 2 simple reads, then take off if nothing develops. Malzone, Speight and Morris do not have that combination. Note that Smith, Kapernick and Luck did. Kapernick > Smith in all 3 and he supplanted him with less experience.
Expect Gentry to play this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he has quality snaps in B1G action (first half, meaningful games).
.
But if he is starting this Fall, methinks we're in trouble. Or he'd just really be that good. Which would in turn say a lot about the sorry state of affairs that has been our recent QB situation.

fan of Gentry partially because my wife is from Albequerque, and I've grown to like that area. More importantly, as others have stated this kid seems to have all of the tools needed to be a great QB.
