Further evidence to determine the caliber of person who slaps the floor
Right after the dunk around 1.29.30 (slap's at 1.29.43 to be exact), if I played for State and a Dwight Schrute look a like came that far on my court to slap the floor, I'd sprint over there and run him over. Of course that is probably because I have difficulty thinking rationally about Tom Crean.
Seriously though, what an idiot. It's one thing when 18-22 year old kids do stuff to get pumped up, but that guy is a joke out there.
This post was totally not worth the effort, sorry.

This whole "floor-slapping-is-stupid" meme is pretty pointless. Sure, it looks funny. But it's innocuous.
January 28th, 2014 at 12:42 AM ^
I agree, and to be honest I only tried to find this clip because everyone here is all excited about it.
That being said, I think it's absolutely ridiculous to see a 50 year old man doing that crap. I've always hated the Crean/Matta (as much as Izzo gets animated, I don't think he does this type of thing) type coaches that wave their arms around to incite the crowd to cheer, and this is the most ridiculous example I have ever seen of that type of behavior.

Anybody who slaps the floor against MSU is ok with me...unless that person is Tom Crean, because fuck that guy.

cool for the same reason blowing kisses to the crowd is cool, because FYS.
January 28th, 2014 at 9:39 AM ^
For months, MSU fans have been calling Nik little nicknames like "Stoukiss," "Nik kiss-ass," etc., so it was fitting of him to blow that kiss. I don't mind the players doing this kind of stuff, but coaches shouldn't. Crean is just a strange character. Now that I think about it, him slapping the floor in business attire sounds about right to me.
January 28th, 2014 at 10:21 AM ^
Neither of those nicknames make sense, and I refuse to believe even Sparty fans are that lame. Also, when did those do this for months? Were they following him around AA? I'm a little dubious...
And it's not Nik's kiss, its the StausKiss
January 28th, 2014 at 11:15 AM ^
fans give Nik shit quite often. A quick stroll through RCMB before reveals such gems as "Stau-tistic" and other garbage. I can imagine he was taking some pretty serious shit from the Izzone all game.
January 28th, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
Here's a UM-Iowa game thread (link) from RCMB with the nicknames being used, but I noticed a while ago lots of "McOld," "scUM," "Stouskiss," etc., on that site.
Edit: Your comment reads like you were implying that I'm lame and made those names up, which is funny.
January 28th, 2014 at 4:04 PM ^
To be fair to MSU Students- I can't believe I just said that - searching RCMB to determine what MSU kids call Stauskas is like searching MLive to see what Michigan students called Jeff Smoker.
Though thank you for linking to that thread - it is VERY unintentionally funny in retrospect.

The only way that slap would have been more ironic is if Burke had a handlebar mustache and was wearing suspenders and a bowler hat while lugging around his Mac Book with "Organic Bee-keeping" sticker on the bag and a copy of the magazine Wallpaper in his other hand.
January 28th, 2014 at 1:55 AM ^
Coaches, on the other hand, should be beyond that, even as a motivational tactic. You'd never see JB slapping the floor.
January 28th, 2014 at 1:59 AM ^
LOL at the thought of JB slapping the floor.

This reminds me of Bob Knight's opinion on players having a game face:

to toughen up their hands for all the slapping, grabbing, and hand checking they do and are allowed to get away by the refs in the Brez.

Okay, it's pointless. Most sports analysis is, and almost all sports conduct is innocuous.

Innocuous, yes, but also really, really annoying.

Leave the floor slapping to Duke imo

Yeah I just don't get what the floor slapping in general is supposed to represent. Why are you hitting the floor? What's the origin of this practice? What does a horseshoe do?

January 28th, 2014 at 1:06 AM ^

January 28th, 2014 at 6:11 AM ^
As I recall, Duke and perhaps a couple other schools slap the floor at the start of many of their defensive possessions. Actually, I think there was an article perhaps last year in which someone traced it back to Steve Wojciechowski specifically as he was particularly obsessive in his floor slapping. Of course, the genealogy of the floor slap is not exact science and if this accurate, where Wojo got it is anyone's guess.
January 28th, 2014 at 9:25 AM ^
When I went to Pete Gillen's basketball camp (at Xavier University in Cincinnati), the instructors taught us to slap the floor at the beginning of a defensive possession to show that we were square to the guy we were defending.

While watching the game saturday, my son asked "Why do people stick their arms up and wiggle their fingers during free throws? " There was no explanation I could give him that made any sense. He just decided, "that's weird." Welcome to life as a sports fan, my son. It's weird.
January 28th, 2014 at 9:56 AM ^
They're sending their positive energy to the shooter and using their mystical abilities to help guide the basketball from his hands toward the rim in the proper trajectory. The "woosh" and arm sweep downward is done to finalize the process as they guide the ball down through the hoop.
It's not wierd. It helps. I can only imagine how many fewer FTs we'd make if our fans didn't help out! ;-)

Slapping the floor is like any other demonstrative motivational tactic., If it works, it looks great. If it doesn't, it looks stupid. I am glad it looked stupid on Saturday.
