Submitted by Killewis on

Just got this email, who knows what its going to be like, but at least the President is doing something to acknowledge the protest.

And for lazy "Dear Students,

President Schlissel would like to invite you join his Fireside Chat tomorrowWednesday October 84:00-5:30 pm at the Michigan Union in the Pendleton Room. He hopes to encourage feedback on the recent issues related to athletics as well as other important topics of concern to U-M's student community. [The fireside chat is an invitation-only event so the president has the opportunity for a thoughtful, engage discussion with a wide range of students. Please RSVP to me at [email protected].]

Best,

It looks like he cares about the students more than the AD. Hopefully students show up and tell him what they really think about DB. The students are the future of Michigan football. The school needs them for future ticket sales and donations.

My son and I were the first people to enter the elevator at the Thompson street structure after the Minnesota game. I held the door for a husband and wife and then a late arriving passenger wearing glasses and a beard, dressed in a suit. As the bearded man entered I said, "It will be $1.00, we are raising money to hire a new football coach." He entered the elevator and turned around without responding, when the gentleman in the back of the elevator commented, "You'll need more than that because we need a new AD too." I said, "That's fine, we can clean house because there's no fixing this mess." The bearded man exited on the 2nd floor without saying a word and as the door closed the woman behind me said, "That was the President of the university." If I had only know who it was I would have had a lot more to say. After talking to some employees of the university that have met with the President I think he cares about athletics and the football program. I hope he can help get us back on track, and soon.

No offense taken 1484. I've been a salesman all my life and it is common for me to strike up a conversation with strangers. I am known for my sense of humor and some things just roll of my tongue naturally. I was pissed off about the loss and the way we lost and would have fired Brady Hoke on the spot if it would have been my call. I'm not sure what the best course of action is at this point and it sounds like nothing is going to change until the season is over. I will continue to support the players and hope for the best.

It could be that he was coming from some other location and parking in the structure was convenient.  You certainly can walk from the President's House to there, but it's probably 5-6 minutes, and if you're in a hurry you might not want to bother with that.

Or maybe he just dislikes walking.  From the post above, it sounds like he took the elevator to go up one floor.

I will be there and will offer my thoughts which match up with 98% of Michigan students. Dave Brandon should be fired immediately and unceremoniously and Brady Hoke should follow with his tail between his legs. I hope he is ashamed of the travesty of coaching he has imparted on the university for millions a year. If he had any sense of morals or the gut of a true Michigan Man, he'd give his unearned and disgustingly high salary back.

Seriously bro, if you go in acting all "Too frat to fail" you probably will.

Show some class and some respect for the opportunity. Don't put the guy on the defensive - none of this is his fault, an he reached out to you. Go not as a "passionate sports fan" but as a passionate Michigan student, upset at how such a visible part of the University is tarnishing it's image and hurting loyal supporters.

Or just go in like "I'm gonna tell you how it is, nerd" and make him feel justified in ignoring you. The only way this changes is if schlissel is convinced there's real issues here, and not just anger over a crappy football team. You have a point that he doesn't necessarily know sports - so dont reinforce the negative stereotypes of rabid fans.

I'd advise being polite, eloquent, and not being crass, but being measured is a little close to being dispassionate to seem useful.  It's actually a GOOD thing to care, it's just best to come of as intelligently as you are able when trying to offer your arguments.

As the below discussion suggests...have humility. Acknowledge that there are many factors you can't track and that it isn't your job to complete performance evaluations.

This will also help in the real world that you will someday face. Outline the considerations you take into account when analyzing a problem and humbly state a few conclusions that seem apparent to you, and everyone will take you more seriously. Alternatively, take anywhere from a year to most of your career to figure this out, and see what it does for you!

Perhaps its just window dressing, but at least he is trying to show that he takes the concerns seriously and that he is willing to listen.  This is a pretty nice chance for those invited to make their voices, and the voices of the larger student body / alum base heard.

Take this unsolicited advice for what it's worth, but as an experienced litigator, perhaps the most important advice that I can give when trying to get a point across is to:

(1) try to have a theme, as opposed to rattling off every single perceived issue, but back up that theme by citing your best examples.

For example, "there is a real sense that Mr. Brandon's obsession with marketing and branding is robbing Michigan of that which makes it special amongst college football programs.  As an example, Michigan football has the greatest band and fight song, but the level and amount of piped in music really takes away from that unique experience."  As opposed to:  "THE NOODLE!!, the SKYWRITING, the RAWK music, the coke promotion, etc."  While these are important to many on this board, when listed out, they can sound petty.

(2) recognize that the issues are not so clear cut, and acknowledge the counter-arguments.  For example, I wouldn't lead with "All Brandon cares about is money.  He has raised ticket prices, switched to dynamic pricing, littered the game day experience with silly and annoying advertisements and generally commercialized the brand."  Rather, I would say "I do understand that one of Mr. Brandon's primary responsibilities is raising money and balancing the budget of the entire athletic department, and that in balancing that responsibility against the existing traditions that make Michigan special, there is always going to be some give and take.  Unfortunately, I think that Mr. Brandon has allowed the pendulum to swing to far in one direction.  We all recognize that some marking is necessary in order to pay for all of the great new facilities that the athletes need and love, but perhaps we need to adjust the balance to dial some of the over the top marketing back."

In addition, while we all want to deny it, much of our angst is about the football team's success.  I think that this does provide an opportunity for us to try to educate Schlissel on the issues with our team, the need for anew coach to energize the fanbase, the relevant timing of things and why any change must be done asap, and the problems with Brandon's perceived meddling that might prevent us from securing a premier coach in time to salvage the rescruiting season.

Here is the succinct message that is true for every persuasive argument:

DETAILS PERSUADE

Don't just have conclusions.  Have specific events that occurred -- usually, 3-4 is good.  Make an argument, list 3-4 factual points (not opinions, but events, that are unassailable), and say 'thanks' and sit down.

I actually think the worst thing he's done -- so, someone please mention this -- is relocate long-time season ticket holders b/c they didn't want to pay massive fees to keep their long-time seats.  That's like... just not right.

For those that go, can we please focus on Brandon and not seem like a petty group who wants to win more?  Also, structured and concise arguments go a lot further than rambling emotional rants!

I really hope that the students can get the point across in a coherent fashion that DB needs to go. There is a laundry list of items on how DB has alienated the students, alumni, and loyal season ticket holders.

Fireside chats aren't new. My girlfriend was invited to one with Mary Sue our senior year (2011). You will notice that they invited "random" students, yet everyone will be the head of some on-campus orginization.
