Ed Warinner - Very good interview -

Submitted by bluepalooza on October 3rd, 2018 at 7:15 PM

First full length interview I seen with Warinner.  Wow, what an upgrade at Oline coach.  There was a sentence where he was practicing a pass pro drill and the players said "we never did that last year".  Found that very telling.  Anyway, if you watch interview your confidence in our Oline going forward will grow and yes, it is no accident, the Oline is getting better.

Wow.  Almost glad the season went poorly last year--it forced Harbaugh to abandon personal loyalty and find a better OL coach.

What an upgrade:  OL performance is looking up each week (pass pro especially), and now I'm sure why!

This is the 3rd-4th full interview he's given since the summer and I really enjoy listening every time. Don Brown also had one today, always amazing. So much intensity between these 2 coaches. Best on staff (besides maybe Mattison)?

Oh come on. All of these coaches are pretty salty. That's 90's talk for damn good I think? I like Ed though. Nice interview. If I were an o-lineman, I'd want that dude teaching me. Yep, this team is about to kick some major ass.

The line is improving, and this is despite the fact that our two starting tackles couldn't win jobs on last year's line. Its pretty great. Lets hope we can get Warinner some NFL talent in the next few classes.

They really are clearly better this year.  There were some noticably smooth instances in the NU game of linemen passing off rushers to one another, which is a beautiful thing when done well.  Not sure it happened at all last year

Ok- stop me if you've heard this before; new coach comes in, we see improvement in several areas, eventually players are interviewed and they're suddenly learning very basic things under new coach that old coach never even brought up.

I'm not calling BS on Warinner, I'm wondering how previous coach became a flipping coach in the first place and how did no one notice he wasn't even covering the basics???

We have improved for sure, but I won't get too excited until we show an above average performance against a ranked opponent.  Regardless of what system or style of offense we decide to employ, I just want one day where there are way fewer mistakes & penalties and we don't have any major holes in talent/depth the way we do at OT right now, and we're not playing a ton of young guys.  I don't know when that will be, but I am looking forward to that day.  I do like Warriner.  I'm not sure what the offensive problem is.  But, we are still quite a ways away from having that.

I agree with many of your points, but I would also argue that un-ranked teams can have solid to good defenses, NU being one of them, and the OL aquited themselves quite a bit better than I would've expected after the ND game. Yes, still a ways to go, probably won't get there until our younger OT's get some more experience next year or the year after, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how not-terrible the OL has been thus far. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.

Yeah, I think they've been solid post-ND.  I am still concerned how they will fare against Wiscy, PSU, MSU, and I want no part of OSU's d-line.  We do not have anyone that can handle Bosa or Young.

I'll be curious to see if Runyan still holds down the LT position next year or if Mayfield or someone else can pry it away.  Hudson seems like a lock at RT next season barring any injuries or Jones coming in college ready as a true freshman.

Interesting interview and appreciate the fact the coaches both call out areas that fans should blame them for and not the players.  Penalties did kill several great situations and extended drives that had stalled.

Our running game looks much closer to a modern offense now, and I’m sure Warriner has had some influence there. Would love to see a creative mind like that to help with the passing game.

Creativity could be better, but I don't think thats the problem. This staff has a supposed offensive guy in Harbaugh, and three guys that had success as coordinators at given points in time. I find it very doubtful that all four guys can't think of creative plays. I think the problem is that they are running a complex offense with too many plays, that is better suited for the NFL. This can cause the offense to have struggles getting into a positive rhythm. I think they, could really use a modern college coordinator with some pro style elements mixed in.

I personally think it's a little to early to go around sucking each other's dicks yet.

A couple quality games against inferior opponents is great.  I also do see the trend heading in the right direction.  BUT a few biffs, bad game plans, or utterly terrible pass-pro against the big 4 teams we play the rest of the season and the question marks will be there once again.
