Ed Warinner - Very good interview -
First full length interview I seen with Warinner. Wow, what an upgrade at Oline coach. There was a sentence where he was practicing a pass pro drill and the players said "we never did that last year". Found that very telling. Anyway, if you watch interview your confidence in our Oline going forward will grow and yes, it is no accident, the Oline is getting better.

Maryland's O-line coach could have used one of those.

I saw this too....good coach to keep around. Hope he stays!

Wow. Almost glad the season went poorly last year--it forced Harbaugh to abandon personal loyalty and find a better OL coach.
What an upgrade: OL performance is looking up each week (pass pro especially), and now I'm sure why!

not sure that really applied to Frey though, will be interesting to see how both programs' line progresses over the next couple of seasons. I think it favors us

FSU OL has been a tire fire for a long time and it'll take a lot longer to fix it than Michigan OL. They're basically at Hoke level with OL unable to block anyone. It'll take a lot of recruiting and coaching up to fix this issue.

This is the 3rd-4th full interview he's given since the summer and I really enjoy listening every time. Don Brown also had one today, always amazing. So much intensity between these 2 coaches. Best on staff (besides maybe Mattison)?

Oh come on. All of these coaches are pretty salty. That's 90's talk for damn good I think? I like Ed though. Nice interview. If I were an o-lineman, I'd want that dude teaching me. Yep, this team is about to kick some major ass.

My wife walked into my office and saw me watching the Don Brown video. She immediately recognized him and said that’s Don Brown. Man, I love that woman.

Hot damn! Better lock that down! Again!

1. Why was she at work?
2. Why didn’t she ask you why you were watching Don Brown at work? (Are you in the Athletic Dept?)

The line is improving, and this is despite the fact that our two starting tackles couldn't win jobs on last year's line. Its pretty great. Lets hope we can get Warinner some NFL talent in the next few classes.
October 3rd, 2018 at 8:07 PM ^
They really are clearly better this year. There were some noticably smooth instances in the NU game of linemen passing off rushers to one another, which is a beautiful thing when done well. Not sure it happened at all last year

I am pretty sure Warriner’s jaw has its own zip code.

hope he sticks around for many many years
October 3rd, 2018 at 8:25 PM ^
Ok- stop me if you've heard this before; new coach comes in, we see improvement in several areas, eventually players are interviewed and they're suddenly learning very basic things under new coach that old coach never even brought up.
I'm not calling BS on Warinner, I'm wondering how previous coach became a flipping coach in the first place and how did no one notice he wasn't even covering the basics???
October 3rd, 2018 at 8:31 PM ^
I think a good tell is how quickly the previous guy gets picked up by another team and in what capacity. IIRC Drevno had to scrape and scratch just to become the RB coach at USC (where he was very recently OL coach).
October 3rd, 2018 at 8:56 PM ^
Yes, but he also got let go quite late in the offseason.

it gets tiring, doesnt it? it started with barwis... how all of a sudden, gittleson wasnt a good strength coach (and he was).... fans here eat it up...its always the guy on the way out who was the problem...
October 4th, 2018 at 12:11 AM ^
Gittleson was extremely out dated. There is a reason the new weight room is full of squat racks and not Nautilus machines.
October 3rd, 2018 at 11:20 PM ^
Remember when Nuss came in and taught Gardner how to identify the Mike? lol
October 4th, 2018 at 12:04 AM ^
That's a fair point you raise. However, when we've been excited about assistant coaches in the past, like Nuss, it's almost always been a preseason infatuation that died as soon as the rubber met the road. With Ed here we are falling love with him as we slowly discover his endearing qualities.
October 4th, 2018 at 8:21 AM ^
Good point. Really kind of the opposite scenario here.
October 4th, 2018 at 8:48 AM ^
"we are falling love with him"
That's the problem with MGoBlog—too many people start swooning and wanting to jump in bed before the appetizers have been finished.
October 3rd, 2018 at 8:38 PM ^
We have improved for sure, but I won't get too excited until we show an above average performance against a ranked opponent. Regardless of what system or style of offense we decide to employ, I just want one day where there are way fewer mistakes & penalties and we don't have any major holes in talent/depth the way we do at OT right now, and we're not playing a ton of young guys. I don't know when that will be, but I am looking forward to that day. I do like Warriner. I'm not sure what the offensive problem is. But, we are still quite a ways away from having that.
October 3rd, 2018 at 9:05 PM ^
I agree with many of your points, but I would also argue that un-ranked teams can have solid to good defenses, NU being one of them, and the OL aquited themselves quite a bit better than I would've expected after the ND game. Yes, still a ways to go, probably won't get there until our younger OT's get some more experience next year or the year after, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how not-terrible the OL has been thus far. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.
October 3rd, 2018 at 10:42 PM ^
Yeah, I think they've been solid post-ND. I am still concerned how they will fare against Wiscy, PSU, MSU, and I want no part of OSU's d-line. We do not have anyone that can handle Bosa or Young.
I'll be curious to see if Runyan still holds down the LT position next year or if Mayfield or someone else can pry it away. Hudson seems like a lock at RT next season barring any injuries or Jones coming in college ready as a true freshman.
October 4th, 2018 at 7:44 AM ^
Mayfield and Hudson are the tackles next year...maybe this year yet.
October 4th, 2018 at 8:09 AM ^
I think that's the prevailing thought. However, most also thought they would be starting by now as well and neither has received any significant playing time.
October 4th, 2018 at 7:42 AM ^
Michigan out-gained Notre Dame.
October 3rd, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
That was a great interview. I can see how kids would love to play for him.
October 3rd, 2018 at 9:44 PM ^
Interesting interview and appreciate the fact the coaches both call out areas that fans should blame them for and not the players. Penalties did kill several great situations and extended drives that had stalled.
October 3rd, 2018 at 10:14 PM ^
Ed Warinner is Pep Hamilton's spirit animal.
October 3rd, 2018 at 11:38 PM ^
Let this be the last stop for Warinner
October 4th, 2018 at 12:06 AM ^
Our running game looks much closer to a modern offense now, and I’m sure Warriner has had some influence there. Would love to see a creative mind like that to help with the passing game.
October 4th, 2018 at 1:09 AM ^
Creativity could be better, but I don't think thats the problem. This staff has a supposed offensive guy in Harbaugh, and three guys that had success as coordinators at given points in time. I find it very doubtful that all four guys can't think of creative plays. I think the problem is that they are running a complex offense with too many plays, that is better suited for the NFL. This can cause the offense to have struggles getting into a positive rhythm. I think they, could really use a modern college coordinator with some pro style elements mixed in.
October 4th, 2018 at 12:07 AM ^
tremendous hire
October 4th, 2018 at 12:59 AM ^
I personally think it's a little to early to go around sucking each other's dicks yet.
A couple quality games against inferior opponents is great. I also do see the trend heading in the right direction. BUT a few biffs, bad game plans, or utterly terrible pass-pro against the big 4 teams we play the rest of the season and the question marks will be there once again.
October 4th, 2018 at 1:12 AM ^
Considering last year we were struggling blocking against inferior opponents with guys that beat out our two starting tackles, you got to admit that this line is much much improved and headed in the right direction.
October 4th, 2018 at 4:11 AM ^
Its never too early!
