I will not deny that Dantonio is a good coach.  He is.  But he has been extremely fortunate of RR burning bridges with Michigan high school coaches, and Hokes ineptitude to coach.  Michigan went from pulling 6/7 of the top 10 kids in Michigan pre-RR/Hoke to pulling 2-4.  Dantonio took advantage of this, and landed some top end talent that he normally would not get.

Now fast forward to #Harbaugh - Michigan will now be landing 6/7 (maybe 7/8) of the top guys every year.  The writing is on the wall for Dantonio IMO - he just will not be landing the talent he did in-state when we had RR and Hoke.

I would not be shocked at all if he jumped ship and landed at another University.

It looks much closer to opinion than fact to me. I'd go further and say it's lazy and MLive-esque. --- RichRod displayed some social clumsiness and a lack of situational awareness, but recruiting Floridians is not the same as "burning bridges with Michigan high school coaches." As far as top-end Michigan talent is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if MSU's share of that increased, but if that was the case, I doubt that it was a significant increase. Champeen didn't provide any supporting data. Over the past few years, there have been more LeVeon Bell instances (low-rated recruits that MSU has unearthed and developed) than Malik McDowell instances (highly rated local players that may have gone to UMich in better years).

I just looked at the Rivals site. It's uglier than I remembered, but the details are important. Here are the years 2003 - 2011 with UMich and MSU recruits in the Rivals top ten for Michigan: 2003: 5-0 2004: 5-3 2005: 4-3 2006: 2-3 2007: 1-1 2008: 4-3 2009: 2-7 2010: 1-5 2011: 4-3 2016: 2-3 Comments: * Notice that Michigan never got "6 or 7" of the top ten. Prior to the end of the world for some Michigan fans (RichRod's term), MSU got its share of the top ten. 2003 is the only lopsided year. * In the list of seven that MSU got in 2009 (Baker, Norman, Maxwell, Caper, Sims, Treadwell, and Gainer), most were not big contributors. * MSU's 2010 class had Gholston (good, obviously), Bullough (a legacy guy who never would've gone to Michigan) at the top. Mylan Hicks, RIP. Nick Hill was a back-up and Joe Boisture did nothing IIRC. * 2009 was easily RichRod's best recruiting year and featured some out-of-state talent (Lewan, Schofield, and Denard, for starters) that outshined everything MSU pulled in locally. * In 2010 RichRod was recruiting under a dark cloud. Partly self-inflicted, of course ... * 2011 was a Michigan win even in a transition year. * I didn't bother with 2012 - 2015 because Hoke pulled in great classes with a local flavor. * Look at 2016! We lost! Seriously, does anyone care that Harbaugh got only Hill and Onwenu from Michigan's top ten?

I appreciate the effort you put forth here, but I think your conclusions are a little flawed. To me, the real question is how often a state of Michigan recruit chose MSU over UofM when they had an offer from both schools. Many years (most?) the 10th best recruit in Michigan isn't good enough to play at U of M

was the same kind of unsubstantiated bullshit as "he's not a Michigan man." RR just wasn't a good enough coach, period.

Thank god all that horsecrap is far back in the rear view mirror. We've got the right coach now.

Its been a popular opinion around here for many years that Dantonio just took advantage of Michigan being down. It's definitely more than that. And to think he's going to get scared and jump to another school at this point in his life is a little ludicrous. I think that Sparty has peaked but they aren't falling off the map, and Dantonio isn't going to pack up and leave once the competition got a little harder. I know it's a running joke around here, but let's actually beat them this year before we start making all these predictions.

A commitment probably closes out DL recruiting right? I know they want Tufele but he seems like a reach. The best players in Michigan, go to Michigan!

Barring any guys who suddenly pop up, the DL recruiting is pretty much over, especially if Irving-Bey commits. We would have a nice haul but not as highly regarded. OL on the other hand will be taking another 3-4 studs. I think Onwenu moves to DL permanently next year for depth.
