Delton Williams will not sit any games - Surprised by the Valenti and Foster reaction
Valenti and Foster are discussing Dantonio's decision to let Williams play against WMU. Surpised to hear that Valenti thinks he should sit the season or at least not miss some games.
MODS: I don't post often but didn't see this anywhere.....If it's out there....my bad

I've been around these parts for six or seven years, four as a poster. Look at my posting record even just two days ago, you'd realize you couldn't be more wrong. To be perfectly honest I hate Michigan State more than I hate Ohio State based on the fact that I've known so many more irritating Sparty fans. I'm just sick of the Internet mob and its unrelenting judgement, often rooted in biases.

What did Delton Williams do again? I don't keep MSU things in mind.

I believe he's the guy who pulled a gun on a student in another car during a road rage incident. Dantonio pulled his scholarship for 1 year and suspended him for zero games. So, in essence, he exposed the kid to more hardship while actually benefitting the football team (extra scholarship and full roster).
Not sure if he's the one or not, but I recall Dantonio explaining, when asked about punishment, that one (should-have-been-suspended) kid was "a playmaker".

I understand as Michigan fans most will take this with a grain of salt, but intel comes from a trustworthy dude unsurprised by the lack of discipline.

don't your either pull a gun on somebody or not pull a gun on somebody?
August 26th, 2015 at 4:55 PM ^
Not sure how it can be overblown if the kid admitted to pulling the gun. Where I'm from that means you're prepared to kill someone (or be killed yourself). I'd say pulling a gun is at least as bad as a DUI (which is at least a 1 game suspension) and likely much, much worse.
August 26th, 2015 at 5:18 PM ^
Williams' brother got shot and killed last year, so he got a concealed weapon permit (making it legal to have the gun within reach rather than in the trunk). It's not like he got out of the car and pointed it at the other driver. He made the foolish choice of making it visible to the driver behind him.
As for comparing it to a DUI, not all DUI's are created equal either. If someone is driving in the gray-area (.06-.1 BAC) and happens to be on the wrong side of .08, I always think about that differently than those that are .15+ and clearly trashed. The difference between a poor, regrettable decision and very seriously putting your own and other's lives at risk.

"The difference between a poor, regrettable decision and very seriously putting your own and other's lives at risk."
Right, because brandishing a firearm never puts lives at risk.
August 26th, 2015 at 5:44 PM ^
...the important distinction here is between displaying a weapon (what Williams was alleged to have done and admitted to), and pointing it at someone in a gesture that is visually indistinguishable from having an intent to shoot.

I'm not arguing on behalf of all discipline handed down by Mark Dantonio. Frankly I don't follow these stories all that much. I do get annoyed when we as Michigan fans look down from our ivory tower like we weren't in the top 20 in college football in arrests in the last five years. Our coaches may historically be more principled in their discipline, but our program isn't immune to atrocious behavior from its players.

and not arrests. That list is only good to the extent any contact is reported which means it's worthless.

And for that, the state of Michigan stripped him of his right for concealed weapons permits. The school stripped him of his scholarship, and he and his family are now scrambling to come up with the $40,000 for him to secure his degree. Look, I root against Sparty on Saturdays, but if you really read about this kid's story and don't think he deserve a second chance you are a heartless homer.
August 26th, 2015 at 5:56 PM ^
I haven't seen anyone arguing that he should have been kicked off the team. People are arguing that he should have been suspended for, I dunno, one game.
August 27th, 2015 at 7:40 AM ^
Exactly. Pulling the kids scholarship while allowing him to participate in EVERY game this season is a bad look for Dantonio, but it does fit his previous pattern for discipline. In previous instances you could usually count on suspended players being back on the field in time to play Michigan, because that was THE goal back then. Now that MSU is trying to swim in the big kids pool, they don't have the luxury of keeping important personnel off the field at all.
August 26th, 2015 at 6:07 PM ^
Scrambling to come up with tuition and having to rely on grants, and aid packages- like every normal family out there.
You are more compassionate than I am. You brandish a weapon, you should get in trouble. Stripping a scholarship, but allowing him to play- com'mon.

I'm sure you know that. What is argued is that a purely financial penalty is inappropriate, while at the same time, the most favorable for Dantonio. It's not surprising either.
August 26th, 2015 at 6:38 PM ^
whilst reading your posts in this thread.
Williams could always transfer to another school where he would get a scholarship. Something tells me that he isn't exactly footing the bill for his schooling this year.

Family is raising funds. Follow the money trail.
August 26th, 2015 at 6:59 PM ^
He is not being kicked off the team, so no one is taking away his opportunities. dantonio needs to and is punising him, we can all disagree on what the punishment should be - a) X games suspension, b) loss of scholarship, or c) something else. A stern talk of you have been bad is not enough, as what if the other driver got frightened and rammed his car into someone else and injured or killed people???

August 27th, 2015 at 7:57 AM ^
had to go to another school. He wants him to play. The financing was all arranged prior to the discipline being announced.
August 26th, 2015 at 5:47 PM ^
You don't know who is in that other car and what they have. He's lucky there wasn't another dummy in the other car. Sorry, but I don't know how a situation like that gets "overblown".
August 26th, 2015 at 8:13 PM ^
Terrible news about his brother...and all the more reason he should've known that showing his weapon in a road rage situation could have gotten him (or the other driver) killed. He absolutely put other lives at risk and should have been punished...with an eye toward helping him in the future. Yanking $40K from his family's pocket does the opposite of that. And, taking that money, allowing the team to add another player and not missing a snap...that's terrible.
As can always be said, all schools have kids who do dumb (or worse) things. What separates a school like State from UofM is the way it's handled. Dantonio has proven, repeatedly, that he'll do ANYTHING to keep a playmaker on the field.
