Curt Mallory interviewing for Eastern Illinois HC job

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Michigan D-Backs coach Curt Mallory was rumored to be looking for a HC job at a smaller school. Apparently one step closer as he's interviewing for the head coach gig at Eastern Illinois.

Not unlike the Harbaugh brothers.

Mallory's dad was the head football coach at Miami of Ohio, University of Colorado, NIU and Indiana with a career record of 168-129-4.

BTW his brothers are also coaches.  One is assisstant head coach/co-defensive coordinator  at Indiana & the other coaches special teams for jacksonville.

I for one hope Mallory takes the job and then "steals" Al as his OC. On a serious note though, good for Mallory and I hope he gets a legit look.

Jon Hoke to Ann Arbor?  Not sure he'd be willing to leave the Bears for a college job at the same position though.

Any chance Borges follows as his OC?  Hah.

He's rich, doesn't need to put himself through the grind of coaching. Not to mention his businesses that he maintains outside of football. I suppose anything is possible, but I don't see it happening.

Look - I'm not saying we ever need to hire a Michigan alum at any spot, but this is not a Michigan-specific thing.  Mallory went to Michigan and so did Manning.  Those guys are good coaches who might be elsewhere but for the fact that they're alumni.  These guys are also more familiar with the program and recruit passionately.

I'm not advocating hiring a guy who's undeserving just because he played here, but all things equal (or close to it) many schools hire their own guy.

It's incredible how many people are guilty of this, man. It seems like a clear majority here don't like the "Michigan Man" mentality. Then, reflexively, they rack their brains to think of program alums any time an opening is discussed.

I realize college football has an old boy/comfort problem. But for those of us who would like to see Michigan operate above the fray so to speak, it doesn't make much sense to think of ideas that would just keep the Michigan Man party going.

I think your point is valid when you're talking about a head coach.  But for position coaches, who have to do the bulk of the recruiting, it makes sense to have some alumni.  It's easy for them to sell the school when they went there themselves, and they're more likely to stick around awhile, aiding program stability.

I would love to know why Jon Hoke would take a step down from the NFL to come to Michigan...I guess the lure of coaching with his brother could help but man barring injuries the Bears have about a 2 or 3 yr window to get to a super bowl with their offensive talent.

Jon Hoke used to coach college ball and mulled the decision to leave the pros for college before and be a DC under Spurrier (I believe). I think he'd be willing to come back, especially given that he's one of only two people who was kept from movie Smith's staff when Tressman took over. Who knows if he meshes well, would like a change, or sees something long term as a DC at Michigan when Mattison retires. Certainly being a coordinator under his brother would give him greater job security than anywhere else (assuming Brady succeeds).

The only way this worries me is that he recruited Peppers. With a month to go before signing day, it's just another factor for me to consider when white knuckling the times I look at Michigan news until signing day.

became the EIU HC and proceeded to go 19-7 in 2 years.

EIU has quite a winning legacy at the FCS level dating back to the late 1970s. It would not surprise me if Mallory got a good hard look given his coaching experience, but Michigan's 8-5 and 7-6 finishes and the recent bowl game toasting of the secondary probably serve as negative strikes.

...too soon?

In all seriousness, Hecklinski, Mattison, and Manning are the only assistant I want to keep.

Everyone else can be replaced. In fact, I hope every day that at least 3 of them are.
