I get the joke, but McGuffie did fine at Michigan and Rice. Was he overrated in hindsight? Probably. He honestly reminds me of Dennis Norfleet (hold obvious jokes, please) in that he didn't have any trait that really translated well to high D1 football. Fast, but not really big enough to be a running back. I didn't watch him at Rice, but I'm guessing he didn't have NFL hands or route-running ability.

He did make the USA bobsled team!

As for Cole C., I hope he reads MGoBlog and is enjoying all the jokes.

I mean he came in at 5’10”/5’11” 185. Played out his career at Rice at 200. Don’t know how you can say he wasn’t big enough to play RB. Finished his career with  almost 3000 scrimmage yards and 20 total TDs.

overrated? Sure. Obviously he’s not an NFL talent but he was a decent football player that had an impact.

Quick, fast, short-striding RB who can also be a weapon out of the slot.  Probably needs to add weight to be an every-down college RB, but he's twitchy and has a great feel for the game.  Reminds of some of the Maryland RBs that aren't the biggest but are a threat to score with a little space.

Would be an awesome addition to the class.  GO BLUE!!!

During my son's time at Dexter they did not win a game. Not one game over four years. At least that's what he says and he was in the band so he was at the games (also played in UM's marching band.) Get a decent coach (aka a coach who recruits talent) and look what happens.

Any Crystal Balls to Michigan for that Harbaugh guy?

Sometimes he shows interest, sometimes it feels like he is just stringing us along.

You know how it is, the longer they take to commit, the less the odds are that they are actually coming.

I don’t think Hart is as good of a recruiter as many around here think he is.

He was a great player here but he’s a clear downgrade in the recruiting department compared to Jay. Not as big of a deal if he can coach them up and find some under the radar guys, but Michigan was doing much better with recruiting high end national running backs with Jay at RB coach.

But we have more than one year to look at. He’s coached at other places and he’s never been regarded as a top notch recruiter. And that’s okay, not everyone on the staff needs to be an elite recruiter. You can make up for it by identifying guys the scouting service didn’t find and developing players.

He’ll get some high ranked recruits, largely because it’s Michigan and we tend to get highly ranked guys. But Mike Hart isn’t a great recruiter. You won’t see him hauling in  a string of guys like Charbonnet, Corum, Edwards. He’ll be the type of recruiter that can close on an Edwards because he’s local and familiar. But Hart isn’t the kind of recruiter to go cross country and haul in a top 150 recruit at running back. He’s going to load up on borderline 3/4 star guys and get a high ranked local kid to stay.

You can build a very good running back room this way. But it IS a step down in the recruiting abilities of Jay at the position. Doesn’t mean he’s a worse RB coach than Jay, but it is the answer to “what’s with Hart and three stars?”

It’s not that scorching of a take and it’s based on more than just one season at Michigan. It’s okay that he’s not an elite recruiter. I’m not saying fire the guy or anything, he’s a great coach. Just that people have a higher opinion of him as a recruiter than he actually has earned.

Also, Harbaugh's best RB played LB his freshman year and it was Hart who was the RB coach during his all-time great season.

I really fail to see what this has to do with Hart’s recruiting ability. But both years Jay coached Haskins at running back, he had a higher ypc than he did this year. Haskins was phenomenal, but he also had a lot more volume this season than he has in the past. Let’s not act like Haskins came out of nowhere. He’s been a very good and efficient back his whole career. 182 carries for 997 yards (5.47 ypc) and 10 TDs in the previous year and a half (COVID year) as a running back. Seems like your comment was to take away from Jay as a RB coach and it’s just not accurate.

The team benefits more as a whole with Jay coaching TE/ST and Hart at RB. But we can acknowledge that Hart isn’t some ace recruiter and that’s an area Jay has him beat.

You keep saying it’s based upon more than just one season in Michigan. So what is it? You have not explained it. You’re just making an assertion. You have to know something more about him that reflects on him more than just the one year he’s been here to make such an assertion.

He’s been here one season. That’s a fact. Recruiting top-notch recruit takes time. Tell me what you know about his past (or present) that somehow explains how it’s more than just one season at Michigan that explains why he hasn’t suddenly brought in a top-notch recruit.
