Clarifying Shane Morris' 5-Star Status

Submitted by althegreat23 on

We have often discussed the likelihood of Shane Morris being a 5-star QB. In this article, Scott Kennedy gave his take on Shane's performance at the IMG Madden Football Academy 7 on 7 Tournament and thoughts of where he'll ranked. This quote stood to me:

Kennedy says "I don't know where he'll be ranked overall in the Class of 2013, but he'd easily be a Top 10 guy in the class of 2012"

Maty Mauk is rated as the 10th QB by Scout.com and he's rated 4 stars. So I would say based on his opinion Shane will be at least 4 stars also.

The way Morris has been carving up the 7on7 teams and performing at the different camps , I believe he has to be rated like Kiel this year if not higher.

At this point, I don't care how many stars he has. It's been proven now that he can play QB at a very high level and stand out among other elite QBs. This has been sufficiently documented.

I don't think there's any chance he's a 3 star guy. But if he's the Gunner Kiel of 2013 or the Connor Brewer, it won't make enough difference to matter.

To counter my own post:

Having a top-10, clearly 5-star QB early commit will generate a lot of hype for the class and will help get other guys on board.

Starting a class with a Matt Barkley type recruit is huge - you can tell offensive position players that they can expect to be in the end zone a lot, OL that they will be blocking for future NFLers making them look good, and defensive players that our O will be so good that as long as the D does its job they'll win every game.

It will be the first class in a while where the pitch isn't "bring Michigan back" or "early PT," instead it's "come here to win a national championship."

Even if he would be a top 10 qb this year (not overall), that practically does ensure him of 5 stars, because hes only a sophomore and will improve.

They could give him 1 star for all I care. It's clear from his game footage and camp performances that we're getting a heckuva talented QB regardless of where they rate him.

That's true. I believe Tony Pike (Brian Kelly's QB at Cincy) didn't have any stars out of high school. But like WolvinLA2 said it generates a buzz for the class. Shane is already in contact with Dwayne Stanford and LaQuon Treadwell, and hopefully there's a Dorial Green-Beckham clone in the 2013.

It matters what star value he has as you build and pitch the other kids for this class. I am expecting that we'll take a couple of RBs and a slew of WRs, and if Shane is a 5*, it might be easier to have Shane help grab other 5* skill players. Just for that aspect, I hope Shane is a 5*.

Yeah, and I think QB is one of the only positions that can have that influence. If we get a 5-star MLB or DT to commit, it's not going to have much of an impact on other commits. But other positions rely a lot on the QB, so having a really good one can bring other players, most notably WRs. But RBs like having a good QB because the D won't be able to focus on the run and OLs like having a good QB to block for.

that it doesn't matter what the kids ranking is, he's an outstanding player. Same to be said of our class ranking. I don't give a rats tail if the players we get are NR as long as we know they are the best players. If we get a low class ranking because of low player ranks, who cares. Winning with the players we have means more than getting the highest ranked kids each year.

I gave your comment props, but I have some reservations.

Because he has been to so many camps, and because the different recruit sites now diverge a great deal in their opinions of recruits, I think that a consensus of various sites could be meaningful.

On the other hand, though I forget the outcome of Brian's/other posters' review of 'Midwestern recruits are underrated,' it's possible that the above is tamped in the other direction by his being a Midwestern recruit.

However, I'm all about your comment because I trust this staff's evaluations. It doesn't seem likely that Michigant offers some kid a year in advance unless he's at least very good, especially at a time when you've been golden on the recruiting trail.

It's just my take; but, I think the article means Morris being a "junior-to-be" can be classified "easily", and I do stress the word Kennedy used "easily" Morris fits in already with the top 10 upperclassmen quarterbacks. The implication is for everyone interested to watch Morris compete to earn the number one ranking as a quarterback; and perhaps, Morris will be given consideration for number one overall.

WolvinLA2

I have to assume he means top-10 QB as well, not top-10 overall. Top-10 overall is a huge deal, and it would be impossible to say anyone is "easily" in the top-10 overall for 2013. There aren't any QBs in the top-10 overall this year, and almost any year being in the top-10 guarantees being the top QB overall.

Not that that all couldn't happen, but I have a hard time believing anyone can say any player, Morris or otherwise, is easily in the top-10 overall for 2013.

Amazing he can throw that well for someone between his sophomore and junior years. I can't wait to see how he develops. I haven't heard much about his personality, but I hope he's a humble-sort of guy because he's going to be barraged with hype in the next few years. I've seen good players ruined by buying into their press clippings. Yes, QB's have to have a strong ego and leadership ability. But they also need a lot of maturity to deal with the attention. Hopefully, Shane also has a very good handle on the mental aspects of being a successful QB.

Shane is a great kid with a very good head on his shoulders. He is bright, humble and most importantly very driven. He self starts - up early to work out and works very hard.

You never know how these kids will turn out, but he is the total package and I sure hope he has a great deal of success.

It doesn't really matter to me if he's a 4* or 5*, because his love for Michigan is something that gets me so excited. It seems like he's just like us MGoBloggers, huge Michigan fans, but he has a wee bit more talent. He should be a great recruiter for us to have for the 2013 class, which should be another great class.

That being said, it'd be pretty nice for our class if he's a top 10 overall guy

bouje13

But he could be like MROB and just blossom earlier than other kids his age. So while he will most likely improve this coming year other QBs could have further developments and jump him in the rankings.

In sum it's so far out a lot of things can change but we should all be happy to have someone like him (hopefully) locked up for next year.

because he's the same age as the 2012 commits. A lot of qb's have been doing this. Andrew Luck is an RSjunior in college but he'll be 22 this September while most RSjuniors are 21 throughout the season. It makes sense because freshman qb's are rarely ever ready to compete in college and they still need time to develop in the pros after that so starting a year back helps them maximize their eligibility.

My guess is that he's the consensus #1 overall recruit on every single recruiting database. I base that guess on nothing but my own hopes and dreams.

He could mean that as he stands right now(i.e. as a rising high school junior) he would be in the top 10 when compared to the entire rising senior class despite being a year younger.

Although I don't see why it matters at this point. Green jacket, gold jacket... who gives a shit?

Hey I dont want to make a new thread but who knows of a good bar/club to go to in Manhattan tonight? I don't know anything but I have to act like I do. Should be suitable for an under 30 crowd.

that he will probably give Gardner a run for his money to start in 2013, unless he is red shirted? I doubt he will be red shirt but will probably get a lot of time playing behind Gardner his first season...then start his sophomore year. About the time the defense really starts clicking!!! Wow, we will have quite the team in 2014!!!!
