Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis dies at age 80
He was the face of Selma, beaten and bloodied, but still marching on. No one alive embodied the civil rights struggles of the 1960s like he did. He was a hero to many people, and particularly to black men like me, teaching us to persevere and fight back with votes and policy change.
A titan among men. Truly an inspiration.
Yes, and my daughter met him a few years ago. She was duly impressed.
Never heard a bad word about the man in all his years in the public eye. He will truly be missed.
I miss Michigan sports.
Sometimes life is bigger than Michigan sports. Hard to believe, I know, but it happens, especially in the covid-enhanced offseason of all the M sports.
What a fucking ignorant shallow comment. Shame on you.
Almost as bad as Marco Rubio posting a picture of the wrong dead black congressman.
This is news that would’ve been on the MgoBoard if Michigan were playing in the CFP title game or final four that day.
if you don’t have something nice to say (particularly regarding the death of a civil rights icon) don’t say it at all.
RIP John Lewis.
If you are a person of color, underprivileged, or a supporter of equal rights, you would miss John Lewis much more if he did not have the courage and conviction that he had.
This would have been great thread, but a bit misplaced on this thread.
Thoughts and prayers to the Lewis family.
The ignorant are ignorant of their ignorance. --- Peter Baskerville
It was a sad day when his powerful voice left congress. May he finally find the peace and equality he so often stood up for.
This would be the time to change the name of the Edmund Pettus bridge, which is named in honor of an early KKK leader, to the John Lewis bridge.
Absolutely agree with this sentiment. It would be a fitting tribute to a remarkable leader.
When I finally watched Selma for the first time, I was fairly shocked to find it was still called the Edmund Pettus bridge. I thought for sure it would've been changed by now, especially with the notoriety it gained from the march
I've been there and walked that bridge, for no more reason than the iconic pictures of the bridge and those marches.
I assure you, we cannot do anything worse to a former KKK leader than make his name only truly memorable for a bridge where civil rights marches began.
Rest in power.
This would be the time to change the name of the Edmund Pettus bridge, which is named in honor of an early KKK leader, to instead honor John Lewis.

3 upvotes FOR THE WIN!!!!
RIP Mr John Lewis.
An American treasure, leader, icon, and hero. And so much more.
Sen. Lewis is a national hero and example of civic service all of our lawmakers should strive to embody.
Not a Senator. Was a member of the House.
Sorry, my mistake. Thanks for the correction.
If any of you haven’t seen the video of him at the National Book Award ceremony, do yourself a favor and google it. He was giant and it breaks my heart that he passed while a [comment redacted] sits behind the Resolute Desk.
He was strong and gracious. Demanded justice but gave love. I’m his memory, let’s make “good trouble” and “vote like you’ve never voted before”
Oh look...we have another CNN watcher here on the board.
[Almost entire comment redacted]
Nah he’s just paying the slightest bit of attention. You on the other hand are a lost cause.
White supremacists think Trump is a white supremacist. Why do you think he has the support of David Duke, the proud boys, Richard Spencer and many more?
[comment removed]
This is not even remotely accurate.
You're spewing lies on the internet. How original.
And stop talking about black people like we are some monolithic tribe.
This thread is about the death of an American ICON! Not your ignorant political views.
"This thread is about the death of an American ICON! Not your ignorant political views"
Tell that to the guy who called the president a white supremacist.
You mean he’s not?
Proud boys aren't remotely racist. They have black members. It's racist calling someone racist who isn't. Seems to be many doing that nowadays
lol no it isn't.
It's wrong. It's ignorant. But it's not racist...that's not what that word means or how words work.
If someone calls you an Ohio State fan, that doesn't make them an Ohio State fan if you're a Michigan fan. What a weird take. And the fact that you believe it to be true, hoooo boy.
(Also for you to say the "proud boys aren't remotely racist" when yes, the group is, a the very least, remotely racist considering it's leader had tried to rebrand the mission and redefine itself, in part because its members are often expressing their racist and white supremacist views, attending racist rallies, etc.
So I would say that is indeed "remotely" racist, and to some, you can't be remotely racist...you are or you aren't, but that's a completely different discussion.
But no matter which way you slice it, yes, the proud boys is at a minimum a remotely racist group, just like Washington's NFL team is, at a minimum, a "remotely" dysfunctional and misogynistic organization...can we get back to honoring the life and legacy of Mr. Lewis?)
The FBI labeled them an "extremist group with ties to white nationalism." The FBI are run by Christopher Wray, appointed by Trump and not a libcuck. They've tried to rebrand themselves as pro western values recently but that's like McDonald's selling salads and saying they're a health foods store.
Hi, I’ve stood toe to toe with two members of Proud Boys in a protest/counter protest and listened to them talk at me for hours. Somewhere they have the body cam footage to prove it. I can confirm these two members were at least in part racist so much more than “remotely”. I will take their actual words instead of media talking points from any source.
I 100% agree they are not "remotely" racist. They are quite up front and direct about it.
Some of you need to take a look at American history.
It was the Republican Party that fought to free the slaves. That voted for civil rights For minorities. It was the dumbocrats that fought to keep slavery. That voted against civil rights for minorities. That formed the kkk.
So what happened?
For JTrain, history on race relations in this country stopped in 1964.
Lol. Sounds convenient.
For the record...I upvoted the comment in all three of the same posts above about renaming a bridge after him.
I support guys like him and MLK that can peacefully protest and not burn towns down and f up hard working business owners businesses because a bunch of Idiot white Marxist political activists convinced them to believe police brutality = racism.
But, it’s all good...I’m just here to rile up libnation. It’s ez. Ez like Sunday morning....
#trump2020
btw...I’m sure mod-dude will edit this out and put something racist in because it fits Lib-mob-cancel-culture-agenda....
click the link.... I dare ya....
First, to answer your accusations: yes, I again removed the link, as it's again a blatant attempt on your part, no more and no less, at trolling the board. What's more, I have NEVER inserted a racist remark while editing a thread.
You've made your choice jtrain.
You could have taken it to the mod sticky thread, but are so intent on continuing trolling the board that now I make my choice (and yes, there's an extensive history of trolling the board, click on his username to see all the evidence).
Take it to whatever "chan" sub-forum welcomes your commentary. Bye.
Fuck off with this shit.
"It was the Republican Party that ...that voted for civil rights for minorities."
Of the 21 Democratic Senators who voted no, every one of them hailed from a state that had formerly been part of the slaveholding Confederacy. Those same states today are dominated by the Republican Party.
Barry Goldwater was one of 6 Republican Senators who voted against the 1964 Civil Rights bill.
Oddly enough, the party that was so devoted to the cause of civil rights saw fit to nominate Goldwater for the Presidency that very same year.
Even more oddly, the five states that Goldwater won in '64—South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana—had for almost a century formed the core of the so-called "Solid South" for the Democratic Party and had not ever voted for a Republican Presidential candidate. The Republican Party barely existed as a functional party in these states up until 1964, yet suddenly these states went for the GOP candidate who just happened to oppose the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
That wasn't a coincidence.
Mod removed my link. WAY too much truth in it for the Libs.
Hi, actual historian here. You are wrong and PragerU is propaganda. Please stop posting about things you know nothing about.
Quite amazingly, time and each parties’ history did not stop and be static after WW2. Here’s how to think about this sheep thinking he’s a genius who knows more about history by espousing a beat to death talking point:
Interestingly, there were all kinds of shifts in the mid20th century where a racist like Strom Thurmond left the Dems to become a Republican, and all the racist Southern Dems followed him.
Oddly, your tired argument is for people who want to deflect from contemporary policies and statistical disparities in financial and educational opportunities for gens. People who make your comment are doubly racists, because your inference presupposes that a majority of Black Americans (by party registration) are too inferior to your intelligence to recognize which party supports equality and policies meant to help build equitable paths.
Do you think you know more about which party supports Black people more today? Which party supports ending police brutality and change sentencing and prison disparities? Which party believes in reparations and equal funding of public schools rather than the funneling of it to white flight suburbs? Versus which party points to eighty years ago and says that protestors are rioting thugs and that they see no color? Yeah, Democrats today are far from perfect, but a large majority of us strive for enacting policies that are brought forth by POC and others historically discriminated against. GFY.
Oh goodie, Dinesn D'Souza has joined the board. Time for Kevin Kruse to take you out to the woodshed once again.
Oh, look - another Fox News, Breitbart, and Alex Jones watcher on the board!
It's funny that you tell people to use their brain, yet you lock into a single news source yourself. I mean, its apparent that you're locked into a single news source - your comment comes straight from Fox News talking points. You should open your mind and look around.
Not that it will matter, it's readily apparent that your closed mind is incapable of seeing something different. I fully expect your hate-fueled rants, without attribution, will continue. After all, you're here shitting on the grave of a man that fought for civil rights.
