Can anything be done about McNamara's low delivery?

Submitted by Buy Bushwood on November 21st, 2021 at 8:13 AM

This pin-balling on the helmets is killing at least one drive per game and incredibly dangerous to have these balls dangling 20-ft up in the air waiting to be plucked. Is this something he can adjust quickly (obviously they're working on it) without losing touch and accuracy?  I would doubt it.  Seems like I remember, despite being around 6'6", that John Navarre had a low-release problem, though his would get batted down rather than hit helmets. I can't remember ever watching a QB have this problem so consistently, with balls coming out this low. Of course, some of it is the crossing routes and short dump-offs that constitute much of the offense. Even some of his recent completions, especially near the goal line, are thread through the eye of the needle. That one at Penn State nearly took the umpire's head off. Can't afford unforced errors like this next week.

I've put a lot of thought into this.  4 wide receiver sets and all of them should have Gallon on their jerseys.  That, or Nor(th)fleet.  Outside of that, I am stumped.

He’s not that short at 6’ 1”… it’s not like he’s Kyler Murray or Russell Wilson short. Devin Gardner always mentions his inconsistent mechanics on MMQB. Can’t be happening twice a game like it has been the last few weeks to win this week

I’ve never stood near him in person and I haven’t analyzed it hard enough to have a real educated guess, but I’ve always felt 6’1” was generous.

I HAVE stood next to Shea a few times (he’d stop by after games while we were tailgating near players parents) and there’s no way he was 6’1”. I’m 5’10” and he was a hair taller than me so I’ll say 5’11,” MAYBE 5’11 1/2”. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the same were true with Cade.

Those who can't do teach. Don't you think someone who had bad mechanics and constantly heard coaches harping and trying to fix his mechanics may have a thought or two on the matter? Someone who naturally has good mechanics may not have ever even heard his coach focus on such things.

Oh come on man DG played the position, unfortunately for him he didn't have great coaching or even an average offensive line. But he has been involved with football for probably all of his adult life. I'll respect and value his opinion any day. Also appreciate his mom bias take.  And I'll add DG highlights are still fun to watch. What could of been!

I am not a professional QB coach, but here are some hot takes because internet:

Not during the season, and certainly not in the week before the Ohio State game.  It takes a ton of repetition to make a change stick and obviously you don't want to introduce variance at the moment.

Quite probably not ever.  Cade isn't very tall, so even if he threw strictly overhead with lots of extension the ball is still going to come out low.

He can "fix" the problem by putting more arc on his throws, but potentially at the risk of losing some zip on them and he already doesn't have a cannon.

It's also human nature to throw a flatter ball when you're trying to zip on into a tight window.

So, long answer short, not really.  Let's get him some cleaner throwing lanes.

Exercise.

  • Try jumping around by playing basketball or skipping.
  • Try stretching out your back and limbs by swimming.
  • There is no specific amount of time you should be doing this for to increase height, but the more the better.
  • It is recommended that people children and adolescents should do an hour of exercise a day to be healthy. ...

John Navarre, at 6'6", had the same issue with tipped passes and batted balls at the line of scrimmage.

John Navarre beat Ohio.

Transitive property therfore concludes Cade McNamara's release is fine and Michigan beats Ohio.

Play JJ?

This should piss the masses off….Cade’s mechanics are very poor at times.  He needs to take ownership of it or he won’t be seeing the field much more at Michigan.

Not to be a concern troll, but I watched OSU’s demolition of Sparty and they were knocking down and tipping a bunch of balls at the line of scrimmage.

Im certain Day and co will notice Cade’s low delivery and have their guys ready.  Im sure Jim and staff will know this is coming, especially after watching these week’s OSU tape.

Im expecting more JJ, more rollouts, and hopefully some tendency breaking calls to keep their D off balance… but it’s ultimately on Cade to raise the arm angle.

Is Cade's problem low release or making a mistake with throwing lanes or perhaps a bit of both? There are some large folks trying to get to Cade as well as protecting him.

Cade may not be perfect but as the captain of the current iteration of the ship, he has almost 63% completions, has 12 TD's to only 2 INT's, is 10-1, is averaging 7.9 yards per attempt and has an RTG off 144.6.  Frankly, I'm giddy over the success this team has had to date.

Doesn't most every QB have a problem with mechanics from time to time?  I think this is kind of like wishing Cade was perfect.  If only the Wolverines could be perfect by next week.

Cade and the Wolverines are good enough to win but like the other years it was close it would really help if Michigan played their best game of the year.
