Attempt to change the "You Suck" chant after Temptation to "Hoke Smash"
I came across this on Facebook this morning. Some people created an event for this Saturday to try and change the "You Suck" after Temptation to "Hoke Smash". I know that it has been discussed here before, and that there are people who did not like the "You Suck". I am not sure if "Hoke Smash" is perfect, but I definitely like it more than "You Suck". It will be interesting to see if there is even a noticable difference on Saturday (unlikely), but there are over 600 people listed as attending. Just figured I would do my part to spread the news.

during my time (95-99) but the "you suck" was added later. (I was unclear in my earlier response.)
The chop was there in the mid 90s, a grassroots attempt at making it a claw fizzled during my student years too.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:49 PM ^
...but "Hoke Smash" is just plain douchey
November 16th, 2011 at 8:25 PM ^
Hoke Points!
November 16th, 2011 at 12:50 PM ^
as when the Daily tried to change the Chop into "the Claw" my senior year.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:33 PM ^
It was my first year-- and I found the argument convincing. We're not FSU, fergodsakes.
Disparaging the Claw is a Clawable offense.
November 16th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
the Claw looks idiotic.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
"You Suck" is pretty lame, but "Hoke Smash" is even worse. Furthermore I can't imagine how dumb it would look to have someone to do the Hulk thing at the end. Can you say awkward and weird?
November 16th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
Replace every "you" with "Hoke" and "suck" with "smash"Oh ok thanks for clearing that one up.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:01 PM ^
There are few things that have caught on in the stadium...you suck, the wave, and now 7 nation army... these are a few of my favorite things, so let's leave them be. One that needs a revival is "who cares" following the opponent's introductions. Most of the students were not here the last time we had introductions.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
maybe 'hoke stop' is better.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
Nope.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
I agree that the chant should be changed and go blue fits perfect. I especially hate when the team makes a big third down stop, the oppenent goes for it on forth and short, and the band and crowd are too busy chanting you suck then cheering on the defense in an even bigger play than the previous. I will start cheering go blue from now on no matter what the others chant and maybe it will slowly catch on.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:04 PM ^
I think it should be fluid based on the status of the game. For example, if there is a turnover of downs due to some good opponent yakity-saking, the "you suck" is entirely appropriate. However, its definitely inappropriate if Michigan is being hammered or if there is a fake punt or something like that. It just makes the crowd look stupid in those situations.
"Hoke Smash" is just plain dumb.
November 16th, 2011 at 7:15 PM ^
I don't think you can reasonably ask fans, many of whom are fairly inebriated when they come to the stadium, to remember to chant things "according to the status of the game." If you don't do the same thing every time the song is played, it won't work.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:05 PM ^
Not sure about Hoke Smash, but I believe that the "You suck" inclusion has to go. All anyone would need to do is figure out winning percentage before it became popular, vs. after.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:07 PM ^
no You Suck, no Hoke Smash, and no knock off tomahawk.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
That will go perfectly with sitting quietly in our seats and leaving before the end of the 3rd quarter to beat traffic.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
clearly the alternative to originiality is leaving games early.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
Hoke Smash? Blech! Plus, Hoke won't be here forever.
I vote for GO BLUE as others have said. It'd be a perfect fit.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
I want to do the hockey version just to be confusing until something better comes along... or "Go Blue," whatever works and keeps Temptation coming.
November 16th, 2011 at 5:59 PM ^
I go to the games with my little brother and we both also frequent the hockey games and during temptation just out of habit we sometimes do the hockey chant. We just laugh and then go back to the "You Suck".
November 16th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
I think you all are missing the point of the You Suck song. It's purposefully juvenile and uncreatively simple, which is why it works. I mean come on:
Yoooooouuuuu
Yoooouuuuu suuuuuuck
Yooooouuuu suuuuuuck, yoooouuuuu suuuuuck
Yoooooouuuuu
Yoooouuuuu suuuuuuck
Yooooouuuu suuuuuuck, yoooouuuuu suuuuuck, yooouuu suck
YOU SUCK!
It's kind of like Stanford's tree mascot. No duh it's a huge sack of shit, and the students know that. It's a play on how students who are so bright submit to something so dumb. It's humor that I think is on a different level than MSU's "First Down Bitch," which is crass for crass' sakes.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
I propose this:
You came
I was alone
I should have known
You were temptation
You smile
Luring me on
My heart was gone
You were temptation
November 16th, 2011 at 1:12 PM ^
Replace the "chop" with a "Hail Fist" motion. (We already extend one arm in a fist in The Victors and The Yellow and Blue, why not for Temptation?)
Replace the "You Suck" with "Go Blue."
Then this no longer looks (and sounds) like the bastard child of a Seminole/Spartan chant.
FTR, I've always hated "you suck" and refuse to say it, though I have participated in both the chop and the claw (that ill-fated attempt to de-chop).
November 16th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
I do the chop with one finger extended now. The Hoke Pointing Chop!
November 16th, 2011 at 1:53 PM ^
And relevant. Double-armed point chop?
November 16th, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
The Point should replace The Chop.
November 16th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
Which finger?
November 16th, 2011 at 1:13 PM ^
God what a stupid idea. Why not just kill the chant altogether? Replacing it with something else is the worst idea of the bunch.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:14 PM ^
What the hell?
I feel like someone has been playing too much Donkey Kong on the N64.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
For all the people who don't like "You suck", you should steer clear of games at Yost. For your own good.
Go Blue would be a fine change. The You Suck cheer always seemed a little lame when we got a 3rd down stop but were still losing by 3+ scores.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
November 16th, 2011 at 2:21 PM ^
And I love Yost. After getting sent to the box, they deserve a fond farewell. Never did 'you suck,' I think Temptation deserves better. Honestly, I will probably do goalie/sieve at football from now on because it is still better than both options, and I do love calling things sieves.
November 16th, 2011 at 3:07 PM ^
The atmosphere at Michigan Stadium and Yost are totally different. Those things seem fine at Yost, which always feels like a family gathering, a private event among those in the know. Football, however, is a public event, a face to the world for Michigan fans and the school. It's less about being "crass" or keeping our image as stodgy better-than-yous. It's just kind of lame and tacky.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
I'm definitely a fan of "Go Blue" as opposed to Hoke Smash. As of this year, the band is instructed to not say anything at the end of Temptation (we used to say "awww yeah!") to show that the band is in no way supporting the "you suck" chant. It sucks :(
November 16th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
Wisconsin's fans literally chant eat sh*t and F*ck you back and forth for 5 minutes every game. We have a really tame, and rather boring, fanbase. I am not saying you suck is the greatest chant ever, but it really is not that bad at all.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:57 PM ^
I get it, This is Michigan Fergodsakes, but come on. We have gotten a snoddy moniker on this fanbase because of things like this. Look at us, we are whining about "You Suck?" Really? I was allowed to say this phrase when I was seven. This chant does not demean how prestigious our fanbase is.
We can still have our persona that we are better than everyone else, but there is no reason to act like we are so high class. I feel like some of you are going to start speaking with a British accent and wearing monacles if your underbritches get in any more of a twist. Wisconsin is a VERY fine school that systematically turns out scholars, yet their fans go to games and get crazy with it, we have enough trouble getting our students into the stadium before the end of the first quarter. Let's focus on getting the atmosphere a little bit more rowdy and stop sitting on our hands before we start trying to change the chants that actually make the stadium somewhat loud.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:25 PM ^
Not a neg intended at the OP but at the douche canoe that came up with this shit-brained idea.
Put me down for "Go Blue" instead of "You suck" as well.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:26 PM ^
Great idea. NOT!!! Go Blue if you change it at all. I would suggest "you suck" only when we are winning and "Go Blue" when we are tied or losing.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:29 PM ^
In the actual song, the "you suck" part is either
You came
I was alone
I should have known, you were temptation
-or-
You were
born to be kissed
I can't resist, you are temptation
Something tells me we won't be hearing the students chanting either of these any time soon.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:38 PM ^
A couple of my friends have actually sang those lyrics in the student section during temptation. It has never caught on. I for one will continue to do the You Suck.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:39 PM ^
I don't know, chanting, "You were, born to be kissed, I can't resist, you are temptation!" would really confuse the opposing team. And I like that.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:38 PM ^
I don't like 'you suck' but it does sound right with the tune. "Go blue" doesn't fit the music. The 2nd word has to end in a consonant. Hoke smash might work until hoke retires. "Nice Stop" would work but it's kinda hearts and smileys.
I vote for "4th Down!" because temptation is usually played after a 3rd down stop, and it's easily changed to "1st Down!" after a 4th down stop.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:51 PM ^
Punt?
November 16th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
Students chanting "You Punt" will not end well...
November 16th, 2011 at 2:26 PM ^
I like the different variations that may come of it!
November 16th, 2011 at 1:53 PM ^
I've always hate the "You Suck" chant. Not only is it crass and unclever, but when the team we are playing has been smoking us all game and we finally get a third down stop, seems a little ridiculous to tell the other team they suck.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
In that situation.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
is a very sad avatar.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:00 PM ^
We have season tickets and get to every game. My least enjoyable part of my game experience is the "You Suck" chant..........especially if we're not playing like rock stars ourselves. Hoke smash doesn't sound much better and after a couple hours of tailgating it could easily come out as "Smoke Hash". Keep it simple, "Go Blue" or "Too Bad" .
