Pay sites are saying he will NOT be in the class.....
Antonio Kinard Qualified
He hadn't qualified until now.
Many plus ones to you, sir. Convey congratulations. I am so happy for someone who put in the hard work to qualify and to join Michigan. This is such a tremendous reflection on Antonio, and is worth a "star" to me. This in itself is a statement that he is the right kind of guy and will be a great fit for the wolverines. Please encourage him to enjoy this Christmas gift, and to keep at it. Guys like him who give 100% over time are great, and pay huge dividends to the program. With all he has gone through, I'm sure Antonio realizes what a blessing this is, and that he is not "entitled" to anything.
my understanding is the staff hasn't extended an offer to him yet.
Looks like you're getting ripped off.
Christmas come early! Now if I could just get Black Ops for PS3 . . .
If you are making mad cash and getting E-Christmas cards from your homeboy RR something tells me that Black Ops isnt something you need to wait on Santa to bring... /s
But its just wouldn't be the same is if the big guy in the red suit slides down my chimney with it in his hand . . .
reads like the synopsis of the worst pornography EVER.
just make sure to leave a coke for the big guy...
to do this at no cost... hmmm....
just go to the store, sign a program and boom, they hook you up man!
I have it :)
what's your psn? mine is hotrod1290
Congrats and way to stick with it. Good luck to Antonio.
Breaking. This is the link.
It's time to wreck some fools, Kinard!
Let's do this...LEROYYYY JENKINSSSS
+1 for leroy!
Antonio talked to the coaches about a week ago, and they apparently told him that if he passed he was in for this class. Take that fwiw, because sometimes the message gets mixed around and isn't always 100% the case.
With that being said, he only needed an 800 to qualify, and he got a 940. He hasn't talked to the coaches yet today, but he's trying to get a hold of them later in the afternoon.
I don't want to say he's definitively in this class, or that he's not in this class. I'm not really sure yet.
If he is in this class, he will enroll in January.
Am I the only person who worries about the public school system every time I read about a kid struggling to score an 800? Many of these kids seem intelligent and must have at least had their butts in a classroom for four years. You think they would accidentally learn enough to score an 800. Whether it is poor test taking skills (which can be improved) or poor prep from their schools, that is really sad. I bet they had someone working with them on improving their 40 times, how much harder is it to quiz them on vocabulary words?
- Edit for whomever is negging me - I am being critical of the schools, not the kids.
Yeah a lot of these kids "seem" intelligent, but it's a sham, they are all dumb as rocks.
Kids with fast 40 times and dreads, well you already informed us about them. We need to be very suspicious that those kids have the mental capacity to play QB.
You are way off base, Gordie. The only thing I ever said about dreads is that I don't like to see them sticking out the back of helmets. I have spent many years working with kids in both school settings and in shelter settings, and I can tell you that many of the problems they face are because of failures of others. You read the story of someone like Shawn Conway and then hear that he can't qualify for a college scholorship and it should bother you. Most of the kids who end up not qualifying give up or for whatever reason never make it back to the school they were trying to get into originally. There are some kids with bigger issues that would probably struggle to pass these standardized tests even with extra help, but I think a majority of them would do fine with better preparation from their schools.
I guess you made MGoBlog's biggest faux pas, which is to criticize somebody with dreads for any reason. That hairstyle is sacred 'round these parts.
yep I am totally off base, speaking of base, just think of the uneasy feeling you would have, if you came out of a Tiger game and had to pass a couple of dreaded kids on the street! You wouldn't feel to comfortable would you? Or have you changed your opinion?
I am not saying he is a racist, but he certainly is ignorant, and likes to flaunt his ignorance as a badge of intellectualism. I have read his comments in previous threads, and feel comfortable with the position I've taken.
This is what Gordie Bell was referring to:
UMDad: It bothers me that if I am walking back to my car from a Tiger's game and there are two white teenages walking one way and two black teenagers walking the other, I am more concerned about the black teenagers for no other reason than that they are black.
Now obviously the context is different, and UMDad clarified what he was saying, but this is what Gordie Bell was referring to.
"The only thing I ever said about dreads is that I don't like to see them sticking out the back of helmets."
Your posts often seem thoughtful, but in all honesty, writing something like that makes you look like a Family Values type that has plagued Rich Rodriguez. You aren't really Kurt Wermers, are you?
can't have personal preference? Ease off its Christmas
Of course he can have a preference. That (and straw men) aside, dreads are one of the many things used to beat RichRod over the head, so it's hard not to sometimes question their use in posts here.
- - -
Aside: I don't clearly see what Christmas has to do with MGoBlog posts.
Did you see Suh drag a guy down by his hair in the Lion's game? That is why I don't like to see it hanging out the back of their helmets. I wouldn't want to see a hooded sweatshirt sticking out either. I do have a little old fashioned streak in me but I can write it off to college kids being college kids. I have a cousin with a ring in his eyebrow, and a friend with a ring on the middle part of her nose. I think both look ridiculous and make fun of them all of the time, but all in good fun.
That seems reasonable to me. I'm surprised that (hair tackle) doesn't occur more often. It's almost like it would be a code violation of some type.
Makes me think of this:
Yeah and I bet when you make fun of them for those rings they want to punch you in the acorns.
probably. What is your point?
ugh, I hate to nit-pic but i think it's important for people to question what it is they mean when they use the term "old-fashioned". Just give it some thought. That's all I'm going to say.
I believe it is a sarcastic shot at UMDad's previous racist assertions that Denard didn't have the mental capability of becoming a better quarterback than Tate because he had dreadlocks.
I realize that UofM is PCU, but give me a break. I said that Tate Forcier seemed better at reading defenses than Denard Robinson and that Denard seemed like more of a runner than a QB. Denards success as an overall QB has proven me wrong on many of my reservations about him as a QB, but I think there is still some argument about his ability to read defenses and pass the ball. I still think Tate is a better passer, but now feel that overall we are better with Denard at the helm. Suggesting that a white kid might me better at something than a black kid does not in any way shape or form suggest racism unless the assertion is that it is BECAUSE one is white and one is black. I was insulted then when it was suggested and I am insulted now.
Even with the threat of being a very dangerous runner, Denard Robinson's reading of defenses has been suspect. I don't think it's a stretch to agree with UMDad's assertion that Robinson lags behind Forcier in that area.
Forcier threw 4 interceptions this year (and 4 TDs), but in my opinion, he reads defenses fairly well...it's just that his arm/decision making doesn't always cooperate. Additionally, teams KNOW that when Forcier is in the game, he's more likely to throw than run.
So anyway...if you're looking to crucify UMDad, you're probably just looking for someone to crucify.
someone said that? just, wow.
edit: don't know how my post showed up here. i haven't even read this post from magnus yet.
what's an avg score? in my day 1200 was a very good score (probably around a 85-90 percentile rank). just wondering where a 940 rates on a percentile rank.
940 seems like a pretty good score. That really just proves my point. The kid took this year, worked hard to do well on the test, and did well on the test. He obviously has the aptitude, he just lacked the skills. The fact that he lacked the lacked the skills is a shame and a direct result of a failure in the school system. He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for facing adversity and putting himself in a position to succeed. I would love to see a whole team of guys like that instead of guys that transfer at the first sign of problems.
the average is usually around 1020 or so, 940 is pretty significantly lower than that, so I'd say it's around 35'th percentile. 800 is like 15th percentile, I can't believe that's the min, but ok.
Would you rather have the schools teach to tests or teach what the kids need to know?
If a kid can't score high enough on a test to be granted admission to a college how have they been taught what they need to know?
The SAT is not a measure of knowledge, but the student's ability to learn. It is supposed to be over different material than what is typically taught in schools so that they can measure the student's ability to learn. It's also graded on a curve, so the overall school system can be 100 times better than it was 10 years ago, but you will still see grades like this on the SAT no matter what.
This doesn't even take into consideration the fact that he might have a learning disability, which would put him behind those with equivalent knowledge or that he might not have had time or money to take a class specifically designed to boost your test scores. Neither of those factors are really indictments of the school system. Chalk this up as another case of none of us having all the facts.
I don't think kids scoring 800 on their SAT are getting much of either.
is not a good score, i am all for letting athletes come to michigan if qualified because like students from the general body, they are excellent in their field .... but come on, lets not even begin to pretend 940 is good at Michigan, it will be in the bottom 1% of students pry
This. I think you get around a 600 if you just leave everything blank.
Just 400 since only the traditional math and verbal sections count for qualifying.
you are awesomeness personified!
Tom- If he enrolls in January, will we be able to count his scholarship towards last year's numbers, keeping a scholly open for this year's recruiting class? Thanks, in advance!
It really doesn't matter. Barring an obscene amount of attrition, Michigan won't be taking 25 kids in the 2011 class. Only 25 freshmen can enroll for the fall, but at this point, Michigan's class should only be 18-20.
^^ Love TomVH
I second that emotion, but you should be sending some love to His Dudeness as well . . .
ok, if you don't have a link, will you describe your source?
His name is Antonio Kinard.
Can you be more specific? I only trust TomVH!1!
Is he Kinard's cousin or something?
Is that a credible source. I think Magnus would disagree.
Nice Work HD and thanks for the info.
In qualification a member of Michigan's signing class has a name, his name is Antonio Kinard
His name is Antonio Kinard...
His name is Antonio Kinard...
His name is Antonio Kinard...
Things are looking pretty good in recruiting right now! I never thought we would be landing 3 defensive recruits this month.
From TomVH. It's about 3 posts up from this one. Stop if you reach the top of the page; you've gone too far.
Stop messing around and check your email or something.
that MGoBloggers, in general hate the MSM, but always need a link from the MSM to validate a story. It's interesting, to say the least.
It's a fine line. If someone like His Dudeness, who has been around forever, comes out with something like this, most of us will believe him (even if we look for confirmation). If ChunkyLover53, who joined last week and has 81 points, posted "OMG I herd Antwoine Kinard is giong to be Blue next year!!!," most of us would need a little confirmation before we believe him.
+1 for simpsons reference
What we need is not MSM "confirmation." Usually, confirmation from Tom VH ends all doubt. And increasingly, the MSM is figuring that out, too, and they are asking Tom for quotes now.
to the rescue once again...thanks for elaborating Tom
Welcome Antonio, let's get cracking.
Searching for a fitting description of a Michigan Man? There are many.. Mr. Kinard, you sir, have just found one. I hope you take great pride in not giving up, and making your dream come true in the face of stacked odds. You inspire me and we welcome you to the family!
If I hadn't watched The Wire yet or was in the process of watching the series for the first time, I would absolutely hate you right now.
i was gonna ask about these
In the hello post, it says he is 6-4 200 lbs anyone see any current updates on his size?
Edit: Found he is listed at 6-4 215lbs on his 2010 team roster..
Does this drop us down one scholarship in the 2011 class?
It doesn't matter where they count him because the limitation is overall count of 85.
Congrats to Antonio! Who doesn't want a kid who worked his tail off to qualify instead of blowing it off and going to another school that had lower standards?
Big credit to Antonio for working hard to qualify and sticking with his commitment despite the setback, two things you don't see very often these days. Plus upside for the class, a real linebacker with an extra year of maturity as well as the benefits of early enrolling. He should be ready to contribute next fall. All good.
for sticking to doing the work needed to get to a major University.
Just think, he is another year older, (and bigger), and ought to be able to contribute to the team that much better.
This seems like a win for the team.
Hopefully others will see how he did it and follow in his footsteps if they don't make it into school the first time they try.
will AK be joining the team as an EE?
Yes, Kinard is a good addition to this class
Good job kinard, getting qualified. Could always use more true linebackers. Would he be a true freshman coming in or a redshirt freshman? Thanks
... and im not completly sure, but he would be a true freshman because he grey shirted last season.
He would be a true freshman in Fall 2011, but that doesn't mean he "grayshirted" in the fall. "Grayshirting" refers to students who pay their own way to the school until a scholarship opens up.
Kinard obviously didn't attend Michigan; he attended Hargrave Military Academy, a prep school that does not suck away students' eligibility.
Excactly. And that is why the prep school option is great for kids, they get another year to develop WITHOUT losing a year of eligibility.
On the field? Does anyone have his stats at Hargrave?
I haven't heard anything regarding his cumulative stats, but he was supposedly starting at linebacker. However, in the game recaps I've seen, he hasn't been mentioned once.
Room to grow too. This the kind of big explosive player we need to add to this defense. Great work by him. He showed a lot of character taking care of business.
Merry Christmas and a Happy 4 or 5 years at the AA. Congratulations on sucking up what was probably dissapointment, working hard to reach your goal of playing wolverine football. We will anticipate seeing you on the practice field this spring and contributing to our breakout season. Thank you for your determination and hard work. mimimumof 12 wins next year.
More defensive talent. Love it.
But I don't think it matters that he's an EE for scholarship count purposes - the incoming class (2011) won't be over 25 players (or 27 or whatever the B1G limit is now), there aren't enough scholarships available. As long as that's the case, no reason to backdate.
The relevant cap is the 85 total scholarship limit and that's ongoing.
I have a feeling he will be a special player. The work ethic is there. Antonio, congrats! You made it happen.
I want to make sure everyone realizes that I said I don't know if he'll be in this class, despite this qualifying score. Everyone seems to be celebrating, but there's a decent chance he's not going to be in this class. Before this happened today I had heard he wouldn't be, which is why I said in my original post to take everything fwiw and that I didn't know what would happen. Not to always be the harbinger of doom, but everyone seemed to be celebrating prematurely.
I had heard up to this point that he didn't have an offer. And if Frost is a part of the class, it seems like overkill to take Jones, Morgan, Frost, and Kinard (even though Frost might start off at WR).
I'm not saying Kinard WON'T get an offer, but he didn't have one until recently, if at all.
