50 million donated to Michigan for study of democracies
Conspiracy theory is that it was for Harbaugh.

Well I would have liked all $50m for Harbaugh exceptionalism. I'm highly doubt Slovakia is clammering for more of the American kind.

Wait, didnt this guy also just get elected regent? If so, now Iknow why my McKinel apt complex has a huge "Weiser for Regent" sign up, even though though my lease doesnt allow for any signs to be displayed anywhere.
EDIT: oh he lost the regent campaign.
December 21st, 2014 at 9:20 AM ^
"The university says the Weisers will wait to decide how much of the remaining money is used."
If Harbaugh is hired, it goes to that. Otherwise, they'll come up with something else.

Oh, if all this is indeed the case, then it is a bloody shame that the FAA doesn't register individual pieces of equipment that are being loaded onto planes. Now, if someone wanted to make the conferencing equipment a functioning system on the plane.....no, that would mean going through the approval process and that puts off Harbaugh by a year or more. Never mind me.

Hackett is addressing the team on the 23rd, and this way he can introduce them to their new coach!

and verified by a second source that operates said equipment. In addition, a high level Ahletic Department person also travelled west. Now the question is, what will it be used for? A Dec 23 video teleconference with the team? A Dec 29 announcement? Speculation running wild.....

The equipment has been there for several days now.

This smells like the no ipad thing. Schembechler hall doesn't have a state of the art HD video conferencing room already set up and fully equipped? That would surprise me.

"Emerging democracies" = pretty unstable countries such as Ukraine, Middle East, Africa, SE Asia.
Transportation, security on the ground aren't exactly cheap.
December 21st, 2014 at 5:20 PM ^
...countries unstable? Got nothing to do with the fact that whenever those countries democratically choose a government that USA doesn't like then the USA pulls out a bunch of nasty black ops tricks to destablize those countries. In-fucking-croyable!
December 22nd, 2014 at 9:37 AM ^
...that the MGoBlog community is well aware that "the middle east," and "Africa" and "SE Asia" are not countries, and that the notion of "democratically chosing a government" in actual war-torn nations and/or to establish democratic processes in historically impoverished/developing nations is an intensely complicated undertaking, often involving the destablization of entrenched figures with significant power who do not take kindly to attempts to establish any process involving "the people"...
in other words, this topic is worthy of high-level academic inquiry and a gift like this supporting such academic work is a big deal--one of many reasons as to why this university continues to represent the Leaders and Best.

$1 for search firm and expenses.
Nice way to hide that money, Mr. Ross. Way to do us a solid.
...and if by chance, we don't get Harbaugh, he just donated $50 mil to the academic side of things. Smart man, very smart man.
It's happening.

Michigan wouldn't allow that to happen.
Duh.
$50 million based on Jim Harbaugh? That makes no sense. That would affect the jobs and potential jobs of so many people, that would influence your students, that would be plain stupid.
If Ross really wanted that to happen, he could just donate it to the University and the Business Office would hold it seperate from anything related to the University and then move forward with the appropriate action once the decision is made.
Which is also still stupid.
Because he could just donated it after the decision is made if he really wanted to pay the entire salary. It's not like Harbaugh is expecting a check for $50 million the day he signs the contract.
If we have to wait that weird 3-4 weeks to get our first paycheck because our direct deposit has to clear and we have to get "into the system" as they always tell us when we start a new job...Jim Harbaugh has to wait too dammit.

I know the comments here are facetious, but the guy is getting a research center named after him, which is a pretty big deal. I just attended the opening of a similar center at my university and a whole community of people was elated about it.
When a center is founded, it generally involves a large donation because said donation endows the center in perpetuity rather than funding it for a short time.

"KABUL, Afghanistan — Defying a campaign of Taliban violence that unleashed 39 suicide bombers in the two months before Election Day, Afghan voters on Saturday turned out in such high numbers to choose a new president and provincial councils that polling hours were extended nationwide, in a triumph of determination over intimidation."

Given the stunningly crappy voter turnout for elections in non-Presidential election years in this country, you'd be more justified in saying that Americans don't like democracy.
