4th Q Gardner INT captures this season in one play.

Submitted by uofmdds96 on

Of course with 13:00 to go in the game, we all know it is over, but when I watched this clip to see WTF happened I noticed a few things.  The UFR can disect in more thoroughly than me, but here goes.

So it's 2nd and 10 from MSU 22 and we "could score".  Gardner drops back all of 2 yards from his shotgun.  Glasgow whiffs his block and has to try to chase down Malik McDowell, (YTMM).  In the process he takes out Hayes, the intended receiver on the play.

Gardner is starting to feel pressure, shocker, and hops in the air and pumps once in a non-quarterback throwing kind of motion. Again shocker, and now shuttle passes it to spot that contains NO receiver.  Thanks to Glasgow knocking Hayes backwards.

While this is happening, upfield we have Jack Miller lunging at #34 T. Jones.  Jones easily sidesteps Miller and makes a great grab for the ball and intercepts.  If only Miller had touched Jones he would not have made the shoe string catch that he made for the INT.  Not that I am blaming Miller for this play.  There is enough blame to go around

Cut to Nussmeier.  He looks away and says some choice words, I am sure into his headset.

Somewhere else on the sideline I am sure Hoke is clapping.  Amazing.

Hopefully someone can embed.

Thanks.

Another clapping thread.

Let's all pretend that two years ago we didn't love the clapping. That we didn't highlight it when recruits mentioned it as a positive, and ripped on Brian Kelly for yelling at players on the sideline because our coach doesn't do that.

clapping sometimes when things aren't going well, but to clap all the time when things aren't going well loses it's message.  A good coach knows when he needs to light a fire with his team and/or certain players just as that good coach knows when to pat his players on the back and give them positive encouragement.

I agree with this.  It's not the clapping that people are pissed about, because when we were winning, the positive reinforcement was a good thing.  And just because you don't want Hoke as the coach anymore, doesn't mean you have to rip on everything he does.  Clapping as players come off the field isn't exactly uncommon, either.

And that would be because Hoke as a man and Hoke as the head football coach for Michigan are not mutually inclusive topics when discussing the latter. How good a man he is away from football in no way mitigates how shitty of a football coach he has been. Is he preparing his players to be good men after football? Possibly. Is he preparing them to be good football players that win on Saturdays? No. By no quantifiable metric is that true. And guess what the lion's share of that 4M per year is meant to be for.

Summed up by two GOT gifs.

1) Here's stakegate (Look kids, it's Theon attempting to rally the troops to conquer Winterfell) Thump! And down goes young Theon!

2) And here's Hoke's apology in the words of Ned Stark

Hoke: “I come before you, to confess my treason in the sight of God and men...”

King Joffrey does what King Joffrey does best...off with your head anyway Ned!

Perhaps the terrible plays are all running together in my mind, but was that also right after we had a short reception that would have put us into a manageable distance, which looked like it may not be a catch, and then we huddled forever giving them time to go to the replay and overturn it?  I seem to recall that happening just before a turnover.

Norfleet muffs the catch, recovers.

1st down, Michigan breaks the huddle at 26 s, snaps at 18 c to Funchess for the 1st down

1st Down, Michigan breaks the huddle at 22s, snaps at 17, r by Smith

2nd down, Michigan lined up at 18, snaps at 12, complete to Darboh for 1st down

1st down, Michigan breaks at 24, snaps at 8, incomplete to Canteen (should have caught it).

2nd down, Michigan breaks at 21, snaps at 8, Gardner looks in the hole and chucks the shovel pass to MSU.

Didn't appear to be huddling for ever....looked like Gardner had them at the line with more than enough to time to see the field.

Thanks for looking that up.  Perhaps it was not another turnover at all.  I just recall a sequence that was indicative of the season, where slight pressure on Gardner caused a very erratic throw that took the receiver to the ground in making the catch.  Rather than hurry up and snap the ball so that the catch would not be overturned, Michigan huddled and a review was called for very late.  We turned a manageable third down into a longer one that played into MSU's hands because we are unwilling or unable to run tempo.

No, WJR dumped us for MSU during Martin's tenure back in 2005. Here's the explanation via Wiki:

"In 2005, WJR signed a five-year contract with the Michigan State Spartans, whose flagship had been WJR prior to 1976. When asked why the switch occurred, WJR responded that Michigan's football broadcasts brought in listeners 13 days a year with meager ratings for the basketball broadcasts. In contrast, WJR is gambling on Spartan basketball to bring in a higher number of listeners."

"WJR currently ranks at #6 (4.9) in the Detroit market according to the March 2010 PPM ratings release after many years atop the ratings prior to PPM."

20 years ago it would have been unthinkable for WJR to be anywhere but at the top in Detroit, but I guess now that they've got MSU, Limbaugh, Beckmann, Savage, Levin, and Bold, they're content with #6.

Devin Gardner was even thinking on that play.  Was it "I don't want to hold this damned ball anymore"?  Because that's what it looked like.  There were no U-M receivers or RB's anywhere close.  Maybe that play more than any other shows why he is not a QB and should not be playing QB.

He was thinking, I'm about to get destroyed, am still in the pocket, and need to throw this away.  His running back was supposed to be in that area, it was a shovel pass (Hayes got picked by his own linemen, so he wasn't there).  Terrible play don't get me wrong, but I can understand why he did it

Explain when he didn't slide to his right and look for a receiver.  What Gardner did is what he almost always does, tries to make the designed primary work.  Even if the receiver is out of the play, he continues with the design.  It's the only explicable reason for throwing into triple coverage for an INT when Canteen was all alone in the middle of the field jumping up and down trying to get Gardner's attention.  And that's the only explicable reason to throw to where Hayes was supposed to be but wasn't.  Gardner even did a bit of a jump to make sure he would clear the DT, then he set his feet and shoveled the shit.

This reminds me of Gardner's int. in the endzone against Notre Dame last year.  That pathetic play got overlooked because we won and Gardner had an otherwise good game.  I keep going back to that play as I never thought then that Gardner could be so terribly bad.  Feel bad for the kid, however, maybe its not all coaching.  Maybe he is just not very good.

When will this coaching staff, AND fan base, figure out that DG is not a B1G quarterback and should not be our qb.

Don't get me wrong, he is a great kid, graduated with undergard degree in 3 years, doing a Masters, never been in trouble, a great spokesmen for the program, been called heinous and dispicable things on twitter by f'in idiots who should burn in hell, played with injuries repeatedly, never called out his poor excuse for an O line & coaching staff, and indured 3 HC, 4 OC..., BUT he is absolutley atrocious as a qb, he is a turnover machine.

While Shane has not been any good in comparison and stunk up the joint when he did play, this season is LOST, and we need to play for next year.  Thus, he needs to get some experience and hopefully make his learning mistakes this year and not next year under our hopefully new HC & OC.

Shane needs to play without playcalling designed for a middle school team, see last years bowl game. Hell he came in cold and hit Norfleet right in the damn hands on a wheel route. This season is beyond salvage and we need to be realistic and build for the future. Same sentiment for Brady Hoke, great guy, nice guy, loves Michigan, but NOT a bigtime coach.

Shane is our future and needs as many reps as we can get him. Nuss has to just let it go and take our lumps. Three yard outs on third and eight doesn't cut it. He has been a qb for a decade or more, lets see what he's got. Put Devin back to wr so he can stay on the field, hell maybe he can catch a ball or two that hit him in the hands. He is broken mentally as a qb, its not tough to see...

He has the same skillset as Denard and Vince Young. The reason he looks so shitty is because he is absolutely NOT a pro-style, sit in the pocket and scan the field type of QB. I also contend that Jake Butt would make a shitty center and Trey Burke would make a shitty power forward. I'm exaggerating to make a point, but it's called using your players' talents to the greatest advantage. How many designed QB runs were called on Sat for our big, fast, and elusive QB? Zero? Yeah, freaking idiotic.

It also showed a coach fucking up as he could have challenged the call as the ball clearly was held against the turf.  That's why State (with a good, but piece of shit, coach) hurried up to the line and snapped the ball.

I remember watching that inexplicable pass, where Gardner threw the ball away from himself rather than toward any receiver, and shouting "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" at the TV ... and really not being at all surprised.

Devin is a great kid, and a terrific athlete, but sometimes ... wow. Just wow.
