TomVH: OL Jordan Diamond's Mom Updates His Recruitment

Submitted by TomVH on

Illinois OL Jordan Diamond has been one of the most sought after prospects in the midwest. The four star prospect has taken a ton of visits, and done his homework on each school he's interested in. Diamond's popularity has been fun, but has also been overwhelming at times for his family. I spoke with his mother today to get her perspective, and where Jordan and the family are at with his recruitment.

TOM: I know that you all have taken quiet a few visits now. Were you on all his visits with him?

MRS. DIAMOND: I've been on all the visits and we've really liked all of them. Everywhere we go when we leave I've said pick this one. We went to Wisconsin over the weekend and I loved it. They're only two and a half hours away. I love Michigan because of Christian [Bryant, 2011 signee], the staff, and my mom is an hour and a half away. I love each school for different reasons. I loved Ohio State believe it or not. I think they showed us the best time when we went there. I loved Notre Dame because of the prestige, I love Illinois because Coach Smith is always there. Like Michigan's staff, he's always available. If I had to pick, I would put them all in a hat and pick one.

TOM: You mentioned Michigan, was there anything that has stuck out about their program to you?

MRS. DIAMOND: One thing I can say about Michigan is that they've been there since day one. Even since Coach Rodriguez left they've always been there. I always tell Jordan that he has more fans at Michigan than anywhere else. They like him, they appreciate him, and if there's a Michigan fan wherever we are, they know him. Christian [Bryant] is coming to Michigan too, and my mother lives an hour and a half away, so those are the good things.

TOM: You've mentioned your mother living there, is that something that will play into all this?

MRS. DIAMOND: My mom lives in Saginaw, Michigan. That's pretty close to the university. She wants to move back to Chicago because that's where she's from. I've asked her to stay there for now because if Jordan goes to Michigan then I would probably move there soon. So before she does anything I want to know what he's going to do.

TOM: Does that mean you guys are hoping he decides soon, or you're just waiting for him to decide then go with it?

MRS. DIAMOND: I was hoping that he would have made his decision by now. I can't imagine how in the world he's going to make a decision. Every place we've been has been nice. I know that we're ok right now, but I'm not sure where we'll be at in two or three years, what situation we'll be in. I don't know if we can drive across the country to watch a football game. If he went somewhere four to five hours away then we could get there.

TOM: It sounds like this has all been pretty overwhelming for you. Are you guys going to take any more visits any time soon?

MRS. DIAMOND: Next weekend, we'll leave here Wednesday morning for Michigan and we'll be back Sunday. He's not participating in any more camps, but he'll be watching some of his teammates at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp. We'll go down for that and then we'll take in the University afterwards, we take that opportunity every time we get it. I don't believe we'll be doing any more traveling far away. He has enough on his plate so I don't think he needs to see anything else. How many schools can you decide to pick from?

TOM: As a parent what has it been like going through this process? Your son has garnered so much attention and has a huge opportunity, how does that feel?

MRS. DIAMOND: I'm a proud mom and I love my son to death. It's hard to describe, it's hard for me to talk about it to people because people don't understand. My strength comes from Chris Bryant's parents, because they've been there. I call his parents if I need a shoulder or have a question. My friends don't know what I'm talking about and can't relate. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, but it's overwhelming and I'll be glad when it's over.

TOM: It's been overwhelming for you, do you think it's been the same for Jordan, and have you seen any growth from him out of this process?

MRS. DIAMOND: I think this is making him stronger. I think that he's the most humble person I know. I don't even know if it's bother him like it's bothering me. He just takes it all in and keeps going. He's not arrogant, he tells me I talk too much because I do all the talking. He's the same quiet, dedicated kid he's been all the time.

Friends with Chris and his parents are friends with yours....and you're close to other family

There's the added bonus that all the snow in Ann Arbor melts everytime Denard smiles

What a gracious, polite lady!  It's hard to believe that her son is anything but the same.  Although folks on this blog have our preferences as to what his best choice would be, it's evident that Jordan will be a good man whatever university he attends.

will have a big role in us getting Jordan's commitment.  You just can't beat having a friend on the team/school that you plan to attend.

This was funny....

"I loved Ohio State believe it or not. I think they showed us the best time when we went there."

Ohhhh I bet they did, lol.

On a serious note Jordan Diamond is one of my favorite recruits in this class.  His mom seems like a real class act I am glad he has someone so grounded to guide him through his decision.....I hope he picks Michigan.

I wonder if mom got a nice Tat while she was there?

All kidding aside, she sounds like a great mom, even beyond the fact that she's in Michigan's corner. And that's the type of player that would fit in great at Michigan (and if it's someplace else, I'm sure it's the right decision for the kid, because his family seems grounded).

that the holidays with jordan, his mom and his grandma are going to be very special for the team.  she sounds like a great team mom - who could go astray with your team mom around?

As a parent, It's really interesting to get a Mom's take on the recruiting cycle.  It must be exhausting and exhilirating at the same time knowing that your child has these incredible options, but also worrying about what place is the best fit.  Great interview, and I wish the best for the Diamond family wherever Jordan ends up.

Sounds like Jordan has a Mom who is going to support him 110% no matter what he decides to do. I love her enthusiasm and excitement for her son. With the kind of passion she has I wonder if she has any athletic eligibilty left?

Quality parents lead to quality kids. We all knew that Jordan has on-field ability, but when you find out a little bit about his upbringing, you get the feeling that this will be one of those guys that takes care of his business off the field as well. I'm sure he'll be a success, hopefully with us. As she said, for whatever reason, we Michigan fans have really taken a liking to the big fella.

Can't start a new thread so I'll post it here. ESPN insider has an article on Magnuson and it has some pretty interesting quotes from him.

"Michigan is definitely my top school right now," Magnuson said. "I really don't know what to expect to be honest but I do want to make an early decision and if things go well, there's a chance I could commit while I'm out there."

"It's tough to speculate because I need to get out there first and see what it's like first hand. I've heard great things about the place and I'm expecting to have a great visit. Right now, there really isn't even a close No. 2 or 3 for me, it's Michigan and then a lot of other schools. I want to have my decision made by the end of this month and I think I'll know a lot more after this weekend."

Looks good that he will commit on the 10th.

Hopefully Jordan follows suit shortly after. GO BLUE!

Tom's been hinting at this for a couple weeks. Nice to see another site publish similar information.

I think if we can lock in Diamond and Magnuson in the summer then we'll be in a great spot for OL recruiting. We'd have 4 commits and would have the luxury of holding off and letting some of the big-time kids we're after take officials and wait until closer to signing day.

You're right, Jordan has more fans here than anywhere else.  And M's the best academically.  And it has the most influential and passionate alumni, not only in the Midwest but nationally.  And Chris Bryant is here and we're big fans of his also.  And your moms is here.  And the staff has been there from the beginning.  And 110,000 and the Big House.  And those helmets.  And we hope you already feel at home and join the family soon.

Saying nice things about the person is perfectly appropriate, but to speak directly to the person, addressing them by name, and trying to recruit as if you are part of the UM staff is going too far IMO. This board is for discussing UM recruiting; its not a UM recruiting tool.

So, we are supposed to say "hey Jordan Diamond, you are an amazing dude (which he is)" but not "hey Jordan Diamond, you are an amazing dude and you should pick UM"

Idiot. Its a forum. About Michigan Football. Why the hell wouldnt we say "this place rules"

Pretty sure a recruit picks a schools program which includes the fan base, and i dont think this is any different than seeing him out in AA and saying "Hey you're Jordan Diamond, i really hope you come here i love this place"

Idiot? Okay tough guy.

I don't think either of those would be appropriate. I think, "I hope he chooses Michigan" is fine. I don't think, "Hey Jordan, you should come here because . . . " is appropriate. That is the coaches job.

I called you an idiot because you posted in a thread about recruiting about how we should say "I hope this guy comes here" instead of "Jordan, Michigan is a great university with a stellar fan base and team surrounded by an all-world education system"

Seriously? How is that over the line?

Its not like anyone is saying "Hey Jordan you come here I'll buy you a fistful of tattoos and car keys"

Why dont you stick to decaf, realize that taking coffee orders is an OK job in this economy, stop playing XBOX on fridays and start having some frigging fun.

One of those statements discusses Michigan recruiting, the other is trying to perform an act of recruiting. I don't think fans should be trying to recruit players with their own little sales pitches about how Michigan is the "best academically" or has the "most influential alumni." I think that the coaches should be doing the recruiting and the fans should follow/discuss/root etc.; in other words, be fans.

I don't know why I even bother responding to you. Your lame attempts at personal attacks truly show how ignorant  you are. But I guess everyone is tough on the internet, right?

I like humble guys who "never overlook an opportunity to keep their mouth shut" and let their play on the field do the talking for them.  This has always been my impression of Jordan, and his mom confirms that.  Jordan Diamond would make a terriffic football player @ M, a terriffic addition to the student body at large, and a terriffic credit to the University.  I really hope he feels the love and goes Blue!

Always love it when parents give genuine answers to questions. Their perspectives on situations are just as interesting as the players' sometimes.

...know to party.   I'm an alum at both UM (undergrad) and UW (grad).    Let's just say that I would have had a lot more fun - and a lower GPA - if I did my undergrad stint at UW.

Another factoid about UW football - they have a creepy statue of Barry Alvarez in front of the stadium.  The statue depicts Barry about 15 pounds lighter with a little more muscle tone than reality.  There's also a phallic statue of a bunch of footballs outside of Camp Randall that looks more like corn on the cob:

{Somebody absolutely needs to embed this phallic statue for me!}

Based on the statue factor alone, I think Jordan will choose Michigan.

Tom.....Thanks for a great interview

It's hard to believe that such a thoughtful, classy lady hasn't raised a son with the same good character.  By all indications this kid is the kind of young man that would make us proud and be the kind of student athlete that Michigan wants to have.  Having said all of this and wanting him to commit as badly as I do, I can't help but wish him and his family luck no matter where he goes.

Tom I have a quick question for you. Earlier last week you said you knew of 3 recruits that you knew we were in great position for that have moved up their commitment dates. Everyone knows that Gant was one of these, and i believe Magnuson is one of the others. But was Standifer one of them or are there still 2 out there that have not committed to us or any other team so far?

Thanks Tom
