Red versus the fly. Oilers blogger Lowetide usually kicks off his posts with some old-timey pictures and a comparison between then and now. The latest one is a shot, of all possible things, of Red Berenson taking on the LA Kings:

red-berenson-vs-the-fly

Appparently their goalie at the time was The Fly. Somehow Red managed to not score here, by the way.

Iowa takes the lead. I'm claiming Demon Bear II for Michigan since he blows up Michigan's three primary rivals. Even so, Iowa has surged back into the lead when it comes to absurd, awesome internet memeage:

(Stanzi the Americanzi was Iowa's first point in this battle.)

Biographical note: when I was in college one of the things we carved out unassailable TV time for was a K-pop video show called "MVH"—for reasons unknown we called it "Mein Video Hitten"—that was a combination of this, ridiculous Korean hip-hop by groups like "Highfive of Teenagers" (or "HOT"), and terrible six-minute ballads in which someone was definitely going to die of a wasting disease. The tension was palpable whenever a new video would come on and we didn't know if it was going to be smokin' chicks in bathtubs or something painfully earnest. I am intensely jealous of Iowa for this. I have definitely not been watching the video most of today.

The sudden relevance of tricorn hats. I wasn't going into Signing Day thinking that musketeers would have any relevance but two separate incidents are taking us back to 1776. One is Bucknell—of the Patriot League—raiding Rutgers for a head coach:

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell hired Joe Susan to take over as head football coach Wednesday, luring back a former Bison assistant to lead a program coming off three straight losing seasons.

Why do you care? Susan is also the recruiting coordinator for Rutgers and his departure might have an impact on FL S Rashad Knight's final decision. Schiano says it won't impact recruiting but it can't help. Bleed Scarlet thinks he was an important guy, FWIW.

The other is a reminder that recruiting could always be worse:

Now all Bruce Heggie has to do is "seal the deal." Heggie, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound TE/DE at Mount Dora High, was mired in a dilemma since December. He was looking for a place to play college football and kept striking out.

"Last week FAMU backed out of their offer and said there wasn't going to be an official visit this weekend," Heggie said. "There was William & Mary, [ed: of the Colonial Athletic Association!] but other than that there weren't really anymore options."

Heggie's taking a visit to… yes… Notre Dame this weekend. It'll be interesting to see how the recruiting rivalry between Michigan and ND develops now that Weis is gone. Weis flat-out killed Michigan head to head even in the waning days of his administration; about the only folks who had a short list with both schools on it that chose Michigan were Mike Williams and Mike Schofield. Things can only get better for Michigan with Kelly there.

DANCE DANCE DANCE TILL WE RUN THIS TOWN.

More Graham. AnnArbor.com was in on a Todd McShay conference call in which the torrent of Brandon Graham praise continued:

“There wasn’t a guy here this week that hustled more, that had better technique, that picked up schemes and did things as quickly as anyone at the defensive-line position or outside-linebacker position,” McShay said. “He’s just a Bill Belichick-type of guy. He’s going to come in and love playing the game and play it better than his measurables and his skill set would lead you to believe.”

I'm hoping he lands somewhere Michigan-heavy so I can have a proxy NFL team. Also, I think we can exclude Bruce Tall from any diagnoses of what ails Michigan's defense.

Historian. This one is seriously obscure: the 1971 Michigan-OSU game, which wasn't even on TV. No audio, of course, just coaches tapes:

There's also a two-parter on the 1988 Michigan-Ohio State game (part 1, part 2)

Etc.: Weird twitter spat between a couple of reporters about Tommy Amaker. BHGP reviews the Iowa-Michigan series in the aughts.

I really like Black Heart Gold Pants' take on the video:
As "SFW" conventions go, it's totally safe and innocuous, but, y'know, it's nine young Korean girls dancing around in typical pop star outfits. IT wouldn't be irate, but a wandering supervisor might not be impressed

Needless to say, I kinda wish I had read this before I started to watch...

Muhahaha! I do so treasure the 7 to 4:30 workday.

Also - Beautiful Korean girls kissing football helmets = I wish I was a football helmet.

I just... I'll be darned if I know how they picked IOWA of all teams. You wonder if Stanzi got his photo in a Korean paper and it has snowballed. Our future vice president may very well be an unwitting Korean celebrity-god.

Yes, the women on it were addicting. Had the cutest little host too...

I just googled, and there's even a facebook site for it..

Edit: Watched the video...THIS is what I want to see in the off season Michigan teams sucking period...brightened my day.

Get these girls instead of the piped in music...

Also, two host...Sue Kim, and Hyun Yim. I thought the first little one was cute, but then the second one became a Redskins cheerleader...

yes, they have pictures. :)

I wonder if my old Tivo had any unwatched episodes from it's late night airing still in the memory..hmmm....

Regarding Notre Dame, Kelly seems intent on just going after the kids he had a relationship with while he was at Cincy. That has their fanbase all lathered up and Kelly's apparently let it leak (via the recruiting networks) that NEXT year, he'll be back to hitting up five-star kids.

That's actually how it USUALLY works. A coach will get hired and he'll try to salvage the class with D-listers that he knew about at his previous stop.

The Irish apparently think that shouldn't apply to them.

Not only have I watched it approximately 147 times, but I've been walking around making a heart symbol with my hands all day. Good thing I'm as intimidating as Adrian Clayborn, or I'd get coldcocked.

I made it through about 1:30 of that video. It was just bizarre. I can't understand Teenie-type music anyways, so I wasn't entirely sure if the lyrics were in Korean or English at first--although I'm sure there was a Dance, Dance in there somewhere.

Also, why was the Hawkeye helmet a 1970s era helmet with the old two-bar face mask instead of a newer version? How did they get a football helmet? Why Iowa? I thought Leman/Stanzi was running on a protectionist platform...

I've never noticed the 1971 game was never shown on the classics. With the news it was never on tv I guess that explains it. My question is does anyone know the reason why?? After the 69 game and considering the rankings of the teams how could 2 highly rated teams in a rivalry game not make it on tv?? I'm old enough to realize ESPN wasn't around then and there were only 3 stations but jeez Mich-OSU not being on tv after the drama of 69 seems incredible. Maybe we need MVictors for this one.

Michigan was undefeated coming in, but Ohio State was 6-3 with losses in its last two games.

I'm not sure if the limit on the number of televised appearances per season that I think the NCAA had then played a role in this.

had injuries and fell off the undefeated bandwagon early. That year there was a lot of attention on multiple undefeated teams in the Big Eight and the SEC. And maybe UM's heavily (often exclusively) run-oriented offense wasn't telegenic enough to justify broadcasting what shaped up to be a mismatch, although, forty years later, we now know that you can't take anything about this matchup for granted.

I'm old enough to have been at the '71 game but now I really know where the term "three yards and a cloud dust" comes from. The D must have really been awesome as tOUS got all their points on a punt/kick return. It's interesting that now, with 2:07 left, you could lose the lead and still have time to come back and win the game. And, like Ziff72 says, after the '69 game, how could this game NOT have been on TV?

It was less boring in the stadium than the game appears on the video, but then I was a freshman full of all kinds of substances, plus this was our chance to end the season undefeated with a remote but still possible shot at the national championship and that kept things interesting. That offense we ran was far from interesting... it just bludgeoned people into submission with the running game.

To be honest, until the final two minutes, by far the single most exciting thing that happened during the game was a halftime flyover by a formation of F-4 Phantoms flying a "missing man" formation in honor of all the MIAs and casualties in Vietnam. I was standing literally on the top row of the south end of the stadium facing the field, and the formation came in fast and low from behind. I didn't know they were coming in until they were virtually on top of us, and I came as close to crapping pants as I've ever been in my life when they went over. The entire crowd went nuts.

Here is what I just emailed Brian.

He was very important to Rutgers, but mainly in terms of in-state recruiting. The staff's Florida recruiter was Brian Jenkins. I say was because he left over a month ago to take the HC job at Bethune-Cookman, and was recently replaced by P.J. Fleck from NIU. Fleck is an Illinois native but recruited Florida for them, and is expected to do that for Rutgers. Jenkins was very good and I think losing him hurt RU's efforts in Florida, Susan less so down there.

I don't think it's that relevant as pertains to Knight. I had heard some rumblings about him for a while, which is why I asked TomVH a few weeks back when Knight hadn't been mentioning Rutgers that much. RU actually pulled ahead for Knight more recently after Jenkins had left. Also, the DB coach is still on staff even though doesn't do much recruiting. So yeah, don't think Susan will have any impact on Knight, and not sure why TomVH was harping on that on Twitter.

....landing on a Michigan-heavy NFL team, I too would love to see this.

I know absolutely nothing about the upcoming draft... so... What are the chances he ends up with the Dolphins? That would give the Dolphins:

- Henne
- Long
- Graham
- and Pat White (Yes, I know, NOT Michigan, but, I like the guy and it behooves M in a major way for him to do well.)

That's a group I love and could root for.

Any chance BG ends up there?

If not Miami, are there any other potential Michigan-heavy NFL teams for BG to end up on?

The 1971 game WAS on TV, the tape just doesn't survive. The Michigan Band pregame show was timed to be shown live on television, and there are ample color television clips with announcers when Woody tore up the down markers late in the game.

This was the era when teams could only be on television twice per season, and for UM and OSU, one of those appearances was always The Game.

it was regional.

Are you saying you actually remember it being broadcast?

I was a 14-year-old Ann-Arbor expat living in Atlanta, and I looked forward to UM's one, or maybe two, annual regular-season football broadcasts all season long. In '71, the MSU game was broadcast, but the OSU game was not shown in Atlanta. Which, at my age, sucked particularly much because, after the initial success in '69, '71 was the only OSU game Bo won at UM until 1976 (Robbie Lytle, 22-0 in Columbus, at long last). This meant that the biggest weekend of the year gave way to tireless ribbing when I dragged myself in to school on that annual Monday morning after. Back to the main point, if '71 was broadcast at all, it was only regional. Are you sure the color clips aren't game films with radio announcers overdubbed, or something?

I am just . . . speechless. Oh. My. Goodness.

What memories this brings back. I spent 6 mo in Korea in 1989 as an exchange student at Yonsei University and Luther Shinhakyo. Stayed in youth hostels, hitchhiked, hiked, traveled. Back in 89, you could eat lunch on campus for less than a buck. I'll never forget watching the NCAA national championship game in the morning in Korea and putting down $100 that Rumeal would make the free throws at the end against a jerk who kept saying "he's gonna choke."

Dated some cute Korean girls while there. Still have a bunch of hello kitty stuff and absolutely bizarre mangling of the English Language. Thank you Brian, thank you, BHGP. I just don't have time to search out and find this stuff, so you bring it to me! Pretty jealous that wasn't a winged helmet in the vid.

While reading through the comments at BHGP, came across this beautiful North Korea propoganda vid entitled "No motherland without you," exhorting all true comrades to unite! One of you WLA engineering and photoshop dudes absolutely need to figure out how to incorporate this footage and music into a Michigan and Great Leader Rodriguez promo vid.

I used to think the demon polar bear was cool. But this takes the cake.

I have a fair few friends in Seoul right now. I'm trying to decide if this video makes me wish I had gone there to teach English after college or validates my reasoning for staying here and working at a web development company instead. Hmm...

I think the fact that I'm not good at making hand symbols such as a heart with my hands suggests I'm better off here.

And by Rogie Vachon...I mean the Rogie Vachon that was signed by Detroit Red Wings in "Free Agency"...if you could call it free back then. The LA Kings demanded young superstar Dale McCourt as compensation from the Wings. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Ultimately the Wings got to keep McCourt -- but then traded him and Mike Foligno to the Buffalo Sabres (in one of the worst trades in history).

Vachon ultimately had some eye problems and washed out with the Wings. Prior to that he was an unbelievable goalie -- to me this was the first in a long line of poor goalie signings by the Wings -- which was not ended until Mike Vernon came to town.

Not surprising Red didn't score. Vachon really was pretty damn good. Kind of Hasek-like in his unorthodox but athletic style.

Hello all,

I'm a Spartan fan, but love this blog - it's one of the best sports blogs out there. Anyhow, I've been living in S. Korea for the past year and these girls are beyond huge. I tried looking into why the Hawkeyes are featured (my guess is that one of the film crew studied abroad there). A couple of the girls in the group actually grew up in the States, but I'm pretty sure they both lived in California, so I doubt they'd be Hawkeye fans. So the only further info I have is in the following link (not sure exactly how great of a source this blog is, but oh well) that explains that they just bought the helmets after running low on money for props.
