I was in Saranac Lake that…

I was in Saranac Lake that night. We had tickets to watch the men's 10K meters speed skating event the next day (Eric Heiden won) in front of Lake Placid high school. Earlier in the week, I had attended the Sweden game. I sat behind Pelle Lindburgh and can still see Bill Baker's shot stretching the twine with 29 seconds left in the third.

The game was on tape delay in the US (as already mentioned). As I eagerly waited for the game to start, the score flashed up on the screen for a few seconds; 4-3 US, 3rd period. I couldn't believe it. Before I could get my Dad's attention, the screen changed back to local programming. But, I knew what I had seen and I knew we had a chance. Well, you know the rest...

Has to be the Hockey Team …

Has to be the Hockey Team (for me). I was at the Sweden game and in-town for the Soviet Union game. Still brings chills/tears. The morning after the Soviet union game? Watched Eric Heiden crush the 10K Meters Speed Skating.

Taylor Lewan was on Rich Eisen's show earlier today, when the news came out. Taylor was stunned and later said that "Vrabes" would have no interest in coaching in college. Taylor thought the best fit for Mike was either the Pats or the Raiders. YMMV.

Never wear M gear. Usually watch all games in my Oregon State Beavers oversize hoodie. I have no affiliation with the Beavers other than a friend that lives in Oregon (she sent it to me after seeing it in a store - she gets a kick out of their mascot....).

I haven't seen it posted (and may have missed it) but the music is by the Vince Guaraldi Trio and the song is "Christmas Time Is Here". It's one of my favorite Xmas songs (since I watched Charlie Brown Christmas in the late 60s - yeah, I'm old). Seems kind of a shame to tarnish this song with a video of Third Base shuffling up the tunnel @ Michigan Stadium.

I noticed the exact same…

I noticed the exact same thing. Will picks off McCord and Barrett throws a block on MHJ. MHJ just melts back towards the sideline. In fact, he doesn't even try to go after Will before the Barrett block. The only two things I can think of is; 1) Hartline coaches him to do that knowing that defensive players may take a shot at him OR 2) he really does shy away from contact (soft).

If he does that in the NFL, I'll bet he won't play much until he changes his attitude.

You know what's interesting?…

You know what's interesting? A cooling vest didn't even occur to me. So, good on you for bringing up the question.

Cooling vests were something only racing teams could afford, when I was racing (back in the Stone Age... /s).

John, Bjorn and Jimmy weren…

John, Bjorn and Jimmy weren't bad either.

OK so, 3B Day & OSU hire an outside firm to dig up dirt on UM Football & Coach. While a bad look, nothing (essentially) is un-earthed. In the meantime, the coaching staff frames this as opponents basically saying that the players aren't really that good and have been winning due to sign decoding ("cheating"). Isn't that it, in a nutshell?

If that's the case, then the Team doesn't need any Message Board Fodder to run roughshod over the remaining opponents and turn them all into paste.

Congrats Coach Just For Men, you just sank your season (and a few others, in the process).

How hard would it be for…

How hard would it be for CoachComm to work with Riddell (et. al.) to get the in-helmet communications set-up? You'd think the helmet manufacturers would jump at that chance (and keep their warranty intact).

Thanks for chiming in. I was…

Thanks for chiming in. I was hoping that a former team member, or two, would reply. The insight former team members can provide is invaluable.

Any chance you can provide some insight regarding the cooling system(s) that are not available to the drivers? Too much weight? Too much power drain? We'd really like to know. TIA.

And, yes, I really liked finishing ahead of Tokai, too. =)

Fun thing:  The Michigan…

Fun thing:  The Michigan Solar Car names all end in UM

That is an actual thing and done on purpose (not sure if you're aware or not and I'm not trying to be a pendant).

If I can get a Team member…

If I can get a Team member to respond, I'll be happy to ask. I also don't think that the car is as sealed up as you think. While it does need to be aero efficient, it may also be 'leaky' enough that air does circulate. And, there may be duct(s) for bringing in fresh air for the driver. I'll be happy to let you know, if I ever find out.

Michigan State, Iowa, and…

Michigan State, Iowa, and Nebraska appear to be oblivious and out of the loop

Uh, wow, that seems to confirm a LOT, esp. MSU & Iowa.

I think it's pretty obvious…

I think it's pretty obvious as to why; Warde and Stapleton are buddies. That pretty much says it all.

Pretty sure it's a staggered…

Pretty sure it's a staggered start and you're really racing the clock. But, having the seals dragging certainly cost Astrum some time & energy. It's a shame because they were closing in on Nuna. However, some teams go balls-out on the last day in an effort to improve their position. Seems unlikely to place third but anything can happen...

I do not have any insight…

I do not have any insight into driver cooling systems. To be honest, I highly doubt the vehicle has one and the drivers just cook. That car is about being as efficient as possible and a cooling system would not only add weight but suck battery energy. So, most likely not.

I used to race both open and closed cockpit cars. In the summer, you'd lose about 10 pounds of water weight over the course of a weekend. Granted, I wasn't sitting in a closed car for most of the day but Astrum's drivers don't need to wear a three layer fire suit, and full face helmet, either. I would guess they have water in-car and they do make multiple stops each day. There is at least two, if not three, drivers so if one is overcome by heat, another could take their place.

Great question!

Yeah, I was chastised for…

Yeah, I was chastised for that, yesterday. I was hoping everyone saw the initial post and would pickup on the acronym. Oh well...

Hmm, I thought Al Golden and…

Hmm, I thought Al Golden and ND's defense provided a pretty good template for how to limit Mr. Williams' effectiveness. Sure, he got some plays when things went off-script but, for the most part, that defensive scheme slowed him way down.

Not sure it even exists anymore...(torched after last Saturday's game?).

As an aside, Minnesota is racing in the other class. I believe they're currently Top 10. The other class is more recognizable as an automobile.

Apologies, I (incorrectly) assumed you saw yesterday's post. Will fix that tomorrow.

I was wondering why that…

I was wondering why that white pin was there (showing a team from South Korea). Thanks for the explanation.

I get that but I didn't…

I get that but I didn't expect them to erase a 30 minute deficit to Tokai in one day either. So, we'll see...

Strategy & Weather will pay big parts in how Astrum does and how hard they decide to push.

This is the MSU team that…

This is the MSU team that was hosted by UM Solar a few years ago. And yes, the beer pong table car is well known. However, Sparty's solar team is (was?) very, very young and it takes some time to build knowledge and sponsors. At least they're trying (or, they tried). Minnesota used to have a very good team as did a university in southern Missouri.

Brunel and Innoptus are two…

Brunel and Innoptus are two teams I've never heard of. And yes, Tokai is a formidable competitor. However, unlike other sports, the teams within the solar car community are all friendly rivals. The community is so small that they know there's a very good chance that they'll be working with each other in the very near future. The European teams are, for the most part, pros. I recall only one team from Europe that was associated with a university (from Belgium, I think). Japanese teams are university oriented but greatly benefit from corporate sponsorship. UM is not lacking but I feel they do much more with much less. It would be great to see them finish Top 3 (but Top 5 is still an awesome accomplishment).

Thanks. I'll do my best to…

What if Harbaugh's plan, if he takes the Vikings job, is to offer the OC position to Ryan Day?

I'm currently in eastern…

I'm currently in eastern France and watched The Game as well as the B1G Championship game on-line (I didn't bother to look for bars). The Game was easy because it was on at 6 pm local time. The game in Indy was more of a challenge; 2 am local time. I joined the Discord a while ago and the person that hosts that posted stream links. The Game was a bit choppy but the Championship game was a very good stream. I do have Norton 360 installed on my laptop which allows me to have a secure VPN into the US. I can also watch TV via my DirecTV subscription (just not Fox). So, if you don't feel like searching for bars or drinking yourself blind (while educating your bar-mates about American college football), this is an alternative.

Find someone in the US…

Find someone in the US willing to buy the t-shirts and then ship them to you. I'd volunteer but I'm currently out of the country.

I beg to differ. As Murder…

I beg to differ. As Murder Wolf would say "I (we) have always been here." Some of us have been a little quiet, true. But, I've spent many a game, in the Big House and elsewhere, high fiving strangers and/or singing; "It's great, to be, a Michigan Wolverine..." We're are here and will always be here.

So, will that be on I-90 in the city proper or I-294 which is the easier way around? Lake Forest Oasis is doable for me. Rosemont would work, too. Plenty of places just off I-294 and accessible by the Blue Line.

1 - Set plays. I've heard of "Umbrella" and know there are others. When are they used? Are they called by the coach or a player on the ice? Are they specifically called after a time-out?

2 - Offensive Zone face-offs. Why do offensive wings sometimes move back towards the point, along the circle (around the face-off dot) instead of staying should-to-shoulder with the defensive wing?

TIA

Lots of great memories in…

Lots of great memories in this thread. Judgement Day for sure. But, I have to post about a game I was at: 2002 against PSU, OT - 27-24 UM

I was there with my Dad and we had seats between the 5 yard line and the goal line about 25 rows up. Super Fan wasn't far from us and the PSU fans, in the corner of the end zone, were taunting him during the game by chanting "Sit Down, Fat Guy". After Chris Perry scored in OT, the entire corner was chanting "We Own, Penn State" and the PSU fans could only stand there, with long faces, and take it. It was great. I thought the Big House was deafening during OT. I couldn't hear my Dad, even when he shouted in my ear. The ride home, to Chicago, went by very quickly.

Disgusting!? No way!

If you wait for the milk to absorb into the graham crackers, you can then mush everything into a semi-smooth 'paste' and it's more like malt-o-meal. Even better!

It would have been nice if it had said "the State of Michigan" instead of "we" in the OP. Not all of us live in Michigan.

Nice! Thanks for posting that. The Legos are awesome.

They're not quite "how to"…

They're not quite "how to" videos but I really enjoy Dirt Every Day. Older episodes are on YT while the newer ones are on Motor Trend TV. They show a bit of tear-down and then rebuild but they also got out and do some trail rides. I think Fred Williams is pretty entertaining. I had a chance to go 'wheeling in Moab a long time ago and have thought it to be really fun ever since. I do not have an vehicle that I could take 4 Wheeling, currently, but would like to have something like that after I retire.

(humble brag)

We lived in Poughkeepsie at the time and I was a freshman in college. My Dad and I had driven up (and back) to see the Sweden game. What a long ride home on the Taconic Parkway that was. I was sitting behind Pele Lindburgh when Bill Baker beat him with a shot from the point. 27 seconds left in the 3rd. I can still see the shot stretching the twine with Lindburgh's left leg, at full extension, in a futile attempt to stop it.

The following weekend we had tickets to watch the 10,000 meter speed skating event in front of the Lake Placid high school (outside). We were in Saranac Lake that Friday evening. The game with the Russians was on tape delay. I was nervously watching some sit-com waiting for the game to start. During a commercial break, the score popped up on the screen; USA 4, USSR 3, 3rd Period. I was dumbfounded. The US was winning (!!) but I had no idea how much time was left in the game. So, I knew that we had a pretty good chance to win or tie. When I finally saw it, the last ten minutes of that third period was quite a ride.

Oh, and the 10K meters? The gold was taken by Eric Heiden (he crushed it). What a great two weeks that was in February, 1980.

Most cars do race in the…

Most cars do race in the rain (F1, Indy Car [road course only], IMSA, SCCA, etc.). And, yes, there are specific tires for racing in the rain as well as 'intermediate' tires that are usually hand grooved from slicks. NASCAR has never raced in the rain. They have given it some thought, on road courses, but have never tried it. I think a lot stems from the weight of the cars as well as the skill of the drivers (as most have never raced in the rain). As someone who has raced and raced in the rain, it takes a special skill set to be really good at it.

I'm pretty sure MD's choice was Tressel. As mentioned above, and I mentioned in another thread, this could turn into a Carr/DeBord/RR situation with MD still being in their AD.
