Watching Orange Bowl in Europe

Submitted by RontBlue on December 6th, 2021 at 7:41 PM

Mgofam, what a couple of weeks!

I can't start a post without acknowledging what an incredible run this is. I am so proud of this team, whole staff, and fans... I can't begin to describe how happy I've been. No need to describe it to all of you though!

I will find myself and in Europe (traveling, non-local) during the Orange Bowl, and it looks like kick-off will be around 1:30 am January 1st. I, for one, can't way to welcome the new year and the first morning with some Michigan Football. I worry a bit about the logistics of watching the game, so I come to the board with a few questions:

 - Are you guys aware of Michigan bars that would be open for the Orange Bowl in western Europe? Preferably Copenhaguen / Paris. I checked the sticky / alumni association link but anything being open showing football feels like an extremely long shot.

- Has anyone watched successfully bowl games in the old continent with a similar schedule before (not streamed on your own computer / tv). How did you do it?

- Tell us your story of watching Michigan football abroad!

Thanks and Go Blue!

I'm guessing your best bet is to buy a streaming service that includes ESPN and then get a VPN that lets you spoof your location.  If the VPN says you are in the US, you should be able to use the streaming service.

Sorry, didn't see that you wanted non-streaming options.  I haven't travelled in Europe recently, but the last time I was there during Michigan football season, finding the game anywhere was completely impossible.  They just do not care about American football.

About 7 or 8 years ago I was in Mexico City over Thanksgiving and I wanted to watch the OSU game so I got in touch with the Mexico City contact on the Alumni page and that first email ended up turning into an email thread or alumni that hadn't ever gotten together for a game in Mexico City. So about 10 of ended up meeting at a bar and one of the alums got his laptop projected on the TV. We lost the game but we all had a blast hanging out and watching the game.

So maybe try to get in touch with an alumnus in Paris or wherever and see what happens.

When I lived in London there were several bars that had The Game and bowl games on, most years the resident alumni association had something arranged for group viewing. 99% sure this will occur there for the CFP.

https://alumni.umich.edu/communities-clubs/club-finder/

Living in Zurich there was one bar/pub called Nelson (I think, don't quote me on that, it is a very heavy drinking atmosphere) where a lot of English-speaking expats congregate and drink. They have access to all kinds of sports feeds, although sometimes it requires a "tip" to have them switch it, or at least a large group that is ordering drinks. Bring your liver......I once woke up in the uniform of one of the Jaegermeister girls (the back was completely unzipped, hardly a fit) and a wicked hangover. Yes, she was there in my clothes, no she did not take advantage of me.

Other options are to find some sort of feed, legal or pirate, on your computer, but those can be choppy/sporadic....though my experience was back in 2000-2004ish, so probable better now.

I am stuck on the insanity of the "preferably Copenhagen / Paris" comment. those are nearly 800 fucking miles apart! Are you going to be in those cities? What is the purpose of the "preferably" in that sentence? Like, how far are you willing to go?

EDIT: In all seriousness though, the game is at 1:30 in the morning in Western Europe so the math changes. The random irish bar that would otherwise do it is a gong show, other places are clubbed out, and every "normal" place isn't staying open for the three Americans who want to watch sports. Your best bet is looking into what the Alumni Association might be doing/planning in a big (capital) city, finding a friend who has already sorted out their situation, or streaming.

In 2008 I was in Vancouver CA and called around to put the game on. I must have called a dozen places. It was an AM game and all the sports bars laughed in my face. I finally found a place. I was the only one there when I arrived and the place was some type of hybrid French restaurant with a bar, partitioned by a big blue curtain. By halftime there were miraculously a few other football fans because they streamed the sound outside to the sidewalk & it drew Americans. It was the Minnesota game, which made the experience even weirder.

If you really end up stuck, traveling, or in general scrambling at the last minute, you might be able to go online to cough*sportsurge*cough, ahem, excuse me. Not that I'd recommend anything like that, but ive heard it works for me when I've been stuck in airports on the weekends. Generally I'd recommend the alumni batsignal for a good bar once you find out what city you'll be in.

Admittedly neither Paris nor Copenhagen are exactly NYE hot spots for europe. But if you find yourself at least “preferably” in Paris, connect with the alumni association. They used to go to Little Big Bear in St. G area. I can’t speak for Copenhagen, but there are alum associations all over most European cities (err…capitals).

Yea, this is where to watch football in Paris (especially NFL), but last I checked they aren't open past midnight most nights. I checked a few years ago for the Super Bowl and I don't think they stayed open, so I doubt they would for the Orange Bowl...

There's an alumni group on Facebook (University of Michigan Alumni Club of Paris) that you could check out. Usually games are on at Caveau Montpensier, but I would also guess that the game time is going to be an issue there. In the end, most bars here close anywhere between midnight at 2am, generally on the earlier end of that range, so it's going to be tough to find a place that will be open for the game. Especially because it probably won't end until 5am.

Your best bet is to just stream it, unfortunately.

As a Pilot who travels around the world every month and myself will be in China on 12/31 there are several routes.

jailbroken fire stick, DoFu sports app ( I used this to watch the state game in Paris it lead me to an unlisted YouTube link and it was in HD), if your an apple user download iMyFone AnyTo to change your GEO location on your phone or iPad with it plugged in to your laptop and YouTube TV/ Hulu/ watch ESPN will work since you spoofed the GPS location, express VPN works great including in China with their firewall. If you spoof your GEO location you need to use the VPN in tandem with that. DoFu sports will work great I use it all the time overseas for HD streams of games.

I was in Armenia for the first month of the 2015 season (first five games). Most notably, I got up at 4 am local time to watch the Utah game. The other games I think were noon or 3 p.m. ET starts, which made for prime-time viewing over there. I did use a VPN over there to watch games and didn't have any issues using it. Even today, I'm using the VPN service provided to Michigan Alumni (it's free along with some other computing privileges as a graduate) and it doesn't present any issues for me.

In the same boat. Will be in London for New Year's so thanks for bringing this up. I'll drink the obligatory midnight glass of something and then find the game thirty minutes later. Timing is not so bad.

I always ask this question:

A jetsetter flitting between Copenhagen and Paris

But he can't figure out how to watch a football game?

Watched a 1989 Pistons Playoff game at Heidelberg’s US Military base.  Wife and I met an officer and he invited us to the Officer’s Club to watch the game.  I drank bucketfuls of Beck’s bomber and hung out with some cool soldiers.  After the victory I was cheering and high-fiving all my new besties when my wife starts laughing and points to the TV.  It had been the 1988 playoff game the bartender had played from her recorded sports tapes. D’oh!

Because MGoHumbleBrag.

I haven’t watched a live sporting event since I had kids 12 years ago. I go dark and watch at my leisure, no commercials. Anyone who’d dare text me a spoiler knows this.

If I’m in an airport or other transportation I keep ear pods in to block random chatter, and avert eyes from televisions.

I once landed and a pilot announced scores, F that guy forever.

I watched most of the 2019 season in Germany and Switzerland due to a work assignment.... I logged onto company website remotely to fake SKYNET into thinking I was in San Fran so that my HULU would work.

Was in Paris for the MSU game this year and couldn’t find any bar w/ the game. I definitely recommend a streaming workaround.
Our hotel even concierge called Belushis, Moose, Great Canadian, etc. to check and none of them had it.

I'm currently in eastern France and watched The Game as well as the B1G Championship game on-line (I didn't bother to look for bars). The Game was easy because it was on at 6 pm local time. The game in Indy was more of a challenge; 2 am local time. I joined the Discord a while ago and the person that hosts that posted stream links. The Game was a bit choppy but the Championship game was a very good stream. I do have Norton 360 installed on my laptop which allows me to have a secure VPN into the US. I can also watch TV via my DirecTV subscription (just not Fox). So, if you don't feel like searching for bars or drinking yourself blind (while educating your bar-mates about American college football), this is an alternative.

I have lived in UK for quite some time. Best solution if you can't find an alumni club option is to go for www.ustvnow.com. They have a try before you buy option and you don't need a VPN. It is for US citizens / military living abroad. Relatively cheap and you can even record games like a DVR option. Bring a HDMI cable and you can stream it to a smart tv. Gives you ESPN, ABC, Fox, ESPN 2 etc so should work for all the bowl games. They have a free trial period as well, so you may not even have to pay. Good luck.

I am currently in the Netherlands and watched all games from home live...albeit some were at 2am using KODI or firestick and VPN. You used to be able to go to the bars in Amsterdam and watch college and pro football games until 6am pre-COVID. Due to COVID restrictions, restaurants and bars in the Netherlands are currently closed at 5pm at least until Dec 21st but could very well be extended into January. If there is loosening of restrictions, bars will probably be open only until 10pm. Depending on where you watch in Europe, it may be similar. It's best to check current COVID restrictions in France or Copenhagen. I would not plan on any big Michigan gatherings by local alumni associations. I was prescheduled to fly back to the US (Detroit) the day after the national championship on  Jan11th. Hope bring some sweet gear back to the Netherlands. Go Blue!

Not sure if it was you (OP) who asked, but there was an exchange on the Paris alumni club facebook page:

Hello fellow Wolverines! We will be in Paris for the Christmas holiday. We will be celebrating New Years on the Champs Elysees and are wondering if there will be a game watch for the Orange Bowl and hopefully the National Championship game? I see you have previously met at Caveau Montpensier which is about a 10 minute walk to the Hotel Brighton. I look forward to hearing from you. (16h ago)

Hello Gary, unfortunately the game starts 1:30am French time and all bars without late licenses close at 2am (including Au Caveau, The Moose, The Great Canadian). They can receive a fine for being open later, however, I will see if privatizing a venue has any impact on closing time. (1h ago)

Just plan on watching it on your laptop. I've lived in Europe for many years now, and I can count on one finger the times I've watched an entire (EST-)prime time football game in a European bar. That was, of course, a Super Bowl.

Even if you find a place that's open at 1:30, they're not going to be open at 4:30, no matter how much you offer to pay them. (European businesses are generally very confused about their raison d'etre.)

Even if you somehow find a place that's open and claims to have the game and is willing to stay open, there's a good chance that what they have is a general American sports channel that might go to something else at halftime and not come back until the 4th quarter. That kind of shit used to happen to me in Belgium at bars that claimed to have March Madness--they had one channel that jumped between games at random, and it's not like that channel had a preference for good games, or games that were close in the 4th quarter, or any other discernible rationale for that matter.

That said, if you find a place that's open and has a satellite that is showing an actual American channel (i.e., not a European version of the channel), make a new thread so I can learn about it.

I was in Paris over Thanksgiving weekend in 2017 and was able to watch the Game at the Great Canadian near Notre Dame.  They had it on at lease 2 TVs and had to deal with a few buckeye fans as well, but the beer and food were good.  Granted the kick off time was at 6p local time instead of 1:30a, so you probably should check with them.
