Will Campbell perpetual shirt malfunction. Tim Sullivan headed out to the Cass Tech alumni 7-on-7 game last weekend and got this shot of Will Campbell doing, well, this:

Ay6-Ym8CUAAk7NS[1]

He's (relatively) thin. This will make him an excellent football player. Lewan:

"The most dramatic change I've seen in a body on our team is Will Campbell," said left tackle Taylor Lewan. "His body is transformed. He was a sloppy 350 and now he's a toned down 308 kind of guy. He looks real good. His conditioning shows it. You should see him run. He's like a gazelle. It's unreal. I think Will is going to do some special things this year."

Come on, baby.

Haters. I just don't know, man. People deploy "haters" to flip criticism to the critic but surely…

Azbl5b7caaaq0qs

From Garry Gilliam™ twitter feed with the comment

"Just in case the haters thought otherwise"

…nope. There is nothing in this world bad enough to prevent "haters" from being deployed. Yeah, Penn State football player, it's jealousy at the root of all of this.

UNC stuff. A "special faculty committee" at North Carolina has called for "an independent commission of outside experts" to review the relationship between athletics and academics at the university. If this happens expect the outside experts to exhale a slow, sliding whistle at the car wreck:

The report, released Thursday, also states staffers in the school's Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes referred players to classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies (AFAM). In May, the university outlined fraud and poor oversight in 54 AFAM classes between 2007 and 2011, including classes that met irregularly if at all.

That included a class last summer with 18 current football players and one former player.

"It seems likely that someone in the (AFAM) department called athletics counselors … to tell them that certain courses would be available," the report states, "it is less clear whether staff … actually contacted departments to ask about the availability of classes."

So there's that. There's playing Hakeem Nicks in 2008 when he was ineligible, and there was Butch Davis employing an assistant coach literally acting as a "street agent." UNC got a one-year bowl ban and some minor scholarship losses.

Why didn't UNC get hammered? They've subverted nearly as much to the drive of the football program as Penn State did, albeit with far less odious results. If the NCAA is ever going to get a handle on these things, plausible deniability needs to be tossed out the window.

Leave Jordan alone. It's bad enough that Roy Roundtree is 21 and Devin Gardner is 12 and I'm going to be confused but come on man let's not take a bomb to our roster:

In May, Michigan announced that Roundtree would wear the No. 21 jersey of "Michigan Football Legend" Desmond Howard next season. Shortly thereafter, the school announced it would be un-retiring and recirculating Ron Kramer's No. 87, Gerald Ford's No. 48 and Bennie Oosterbaan's No. 47 beginning this fall.

Who might those players be? Will they be announced this season? When will Hoke decide it all?

"Sometime," he said with a grin. "In the future.

"We'll see."

Come on man let's not do this. Let's give the numbers to players who have not yet established themselves as starters. Let's do this: not doing this. Come on man.

This one not so close. In other non-WH games on youtube, here's almost all of the 1991 Florida State game. Advantages: Desmond Howard and Keith Jackson. Disadvantages: Michigan loses by 20. Tread carefully:

If that doesn't tempt, 100 random Michigan touchdowns may:

Angry Iowa running back hating God is having its Exodus moment. Or it just released "Blood on the Tracks" or something. What I am getting at is: wow, that got out of hand.

holygrail049[1]

YOUR RUNNING BACKS. I WILL DESTROY THEM, IOWA.

Sophomore De'Andre Johnson got a ticket for "maintaining a disorderly house" because the cops didn't appreciate walking up a never-ending staircase* and then drove very fast away from police*, drawing the usual indefinite suspension. This is the fifth(!) tailback hewed down by AIRBHG this offseason alone, though incoming freshman Greg Garmon got away with a drug paraphernalia charge without a suspension.

*[allegedly!]

The new QC assistant. The NCAA made a move to formalize and limit quality control staffers, albeit one that got tabled. Your move, college football coaches:

Alabama coach Nick Saban’s support staff has expanded to nine “analysts.” That’s up from six in 2011, three in 2010 and none before then.

The money has to go somewhere.

We will fare less well on this list next year. Orson charts fun/good from the perspective of his Orsonbrain. The Big Ten:

Screen_shot_2012-07-29_at_11.15.44_PM[1]

This is because Denard. Next year… well, it'll probably be Gardner and if early returns are any indication that will be fun to the Orsonbrain as well because it will occasionally result in passes thrown ten yards past the line of scrimmage or thirty yards behind it. Our brains will probably not interpret this as "fun."

I think Northwestern gets a raw deal here since they are liable to do anything at any time no matter how big their lead is.

Goodbye, Bolden. Rob Bolden's inevitable, slow-motion transfer process seems to have come to a conclusion with an LSU visit and the notable omission of Bolden from the Penn State roster. How he'll improve LSU's football team is unclear. Tulane, maybe.

In any case, the highly-touted in-state QB recruiting class is down to Devin Gardner's one or two years at the helm at Michigan. Joe Boisture discovered he wasn't actually good at football and lasted less than a year at MSU, Bolden lost his job to a walk-on, and Gardner's been stuck behind Denard.

Um. Nebraska's going to wear alternate uniforms for their game against Wisconsin that look slightly familiar, and not just because they give off the faint air of Rollerball.

image

this is just a picture. don't click on it.

Ad some shoulder stripes and that's Michigan's outfit from last year's ND game. Hopefully Adidas was too busy making jerseys that don't have to be switched out at halftime to innovate this summer.

Derrick Walton doing this work business. He led his AAU team to a championship in Vegas last weekend, garnering MVP honors in the process:

Walton is aggressively moving up the 2013 recruiting ranks, and continued to impress coaches and recruiting gurus with his performance this week in Las Vegas. Before the game, Dave Telep, ESPN.com’s top recruiting analyst, tweeted that Walton is being considered as a McDonald’s All-American after his strong performance.

TELEP: Sprinkle that Derrick Walton name in for McDonalds consideration.

The Mustangs, who boast four Division 1-bound players, cruised through the tournament going 9-0, outscoring opponents by 17 points per game in super pool play.

Walton had 16 points, 13 assists, and one turnover in the final.

Media days stuff. ESPN has a transcript of his speech. Denard:

And Denard:

And Lewan:

And Kovacs:

Etc.: USA water polo goalie Betsey Armstrong will become a Michigan assistant this fall. Advice: try not to get kicked by her. Not that she's in the habit of kicking random passersby. Two things:

(1) that Michigan - Florida State game was one of the most enjoyable games I've ever watched. Desmond could've scored 2 return TDs in addition to his 2 receiving TDs, Buckley does his first "Lambeau Leap," McIntosh runs in an INT, and Amp Lee's feet, my goodness, what he does to that safety at the goal line.

Also YALE VAN DYNE.

(2) Joe Boisture had a back problem which curtailed his career. Whether he was good was never actually proven at the college level.

So an opponent hangs 51 on us in our own stadium, beats us by 20, and you're calling it enjoyable? Either you're being sarcastic or masochistic or you're a closet Seminole.

The only games I can remember which have been as embarrassing and distasteful as the FSU game have been the two thumpings by USC after the 2003 and 2006 seasons, and the bitch-slapping by Tennessee.

Actually, despite the beating, that game was a blast.  It was my freshman year and FSU fans were great.  They hung out and partied like (respectful) animals the night prior.  Then, when they thumped us, the pain wasn't so bad.  It was a fun game.  Nothing sarcastic, masochistic or Seminole about it.

Michigan lost to FSU by 20 that year, but the game was closer than the score might have you think.  These were two pretty closely matched teams.

Michigan lost to UW in the Rose Bowl later that season by 20, but that game was nowhere as close as the score would indicate.  UW was far, far better than Michigan and dominated the game.

The game was an absolute shootout.  We scored 31 which was unheard of for us against any good team back then, but still lost by 20.  But it was not like we just crawled into a shell and went away.  We went toe to toe but were out gunned at the end.

The FSU fans were cool.  They were dazzled by the Big House.  At that time, FSU stadium was just 2 large bleachers.

Perhaps this has been mentioned before, but any thought of lining him up at 3, or even 5, on some plays?

Penn State fans deserve a better top blog than BSD. Their front page as of this writing is the above, three articles on Ohio State (Iowa week was last week; they do a thing from them then one from the opponent's blogger) and then one like our "There are..." countdown that has to be the most trite fullbackian thing every written in the history of trite things people write about fullbacks:

The fullback position is often overlooked and under appreciated, but there was one guy that paved the way for Tony Hunt's record setting career: Matt Hahn. Hard nosed and blue-collar, Hahn had a team-first attitude. Not only was he unselfish when it came to helping his teammates, he had a knack for huge catches out of the backfield. He didn't catch many but it always seemed like the ones he did haul in were game-changers.

I also posit that this response to that response is also trite, and that since the universe is both infinite and infinitely complex, that everything is trite, since everything has been done and said infinite times. Except the theory, put forth only once in any universe, that the mysterious "dark energy" that makes up a majority of the energy (including matter, which is just another form of energy) in the universe and is responsible for expanding the filaments of galactic clusters, is actually strands of trite commentary on fullbacks.

There is nothing in this world bad enough to prevent "haters" from being deployed. Yeah, Penn State football player, it's jealousy at the root of all of this.

Simply proof that if there's one thing that college athletes get off on, it's being "disrespected." There's nothing cooler these days than being the disrespected, dark horse, us-against-the-world, underdog.  It's chic.  Nobody wants to be the favorite.  That's not cool.  You haven't really "made it" unless you have haters, which these days only requires someone to think you won't win the national championship.

If the NCAA is ever going to get a handle on these things, plausible deniability needs to be tossed out the window.

Also, yes, completely agree; they need to switch from an "innocent until proven guilty" model to one that basically says "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, etc."  UNC should be getting reamed, not wrist-slapped - this punishment hasn't hurt the program one iota.

Hmm.  A good question, but I think the answer is "not much worse if at all."  I'm not saying "don't investigate, just slap down what it looks like based on first appearance."  By all means, investigate, but when the school offers up flimsy excuses and dares you to look past them, don't just take that crap at face value.

In other words, when Terrelle Pryor takes a brand-new car home to Pennsylvania, and the school swears up and down it was a "test drive," the NCAA should at a bare minimum be documenting the suspicious shit that they can't find an explanation for, instead of just casting it aside as uninvestigatable.  That's what they do too frequently.  Pile up too much suspicious shit and you have a good reason to turn three years of probation into six, embed an NCAA compliance officer in the athletic department to watch for more suspicious shit, and make the school document good reasons for the appearance of further suspicious shit.

...it'll probably be Gardner and if early returns are any indication... it will occasionally result in passes thrown ten yards past the line of scrimmage or thirty yards behind it.

He's got an amazing arm, but hasn't had the game time to show it.  Beyond that, it's not like Denard has been a beacon of precision passing.  Let's instead maybe be happy that our starter is so good, we have the luxury of using the backup in pass formations.

The North Carolina issue should confine itself to the fraud that was conducted related to the course not meeting and the professor not actually teaching anything.

But the fact that athletes may or may not have been encouraged to take any particular class at the university should be a non-issue.

Football players, like other college students, are going to choose courses that fit around their interests, academic strengths & other obligations.  Sometimes that means they will take classes that are known to have limited or predictable expectations for work outside of class.  Or because a professor has a workable policy for making up inevitable absences.  BFD.

There are all kinds of ways to get this information.  Some of it is in the catalog (i.e. science designed for non-majors), some is from the syllabuses posts online, and some is by word-of-mouth, and some of it is because academic advisors know this stuff or might even pick up the phone and call someone to find out.  I call that doing their job.

I like the number changes/legend patches policy because it makes Brian lose his mind.

I really don't care if Roy Roundtree is 12, 21, or 999 as long as he catches the ball, makes plays and leads us to victory.

All the uproar on socks, jerseys and patches is befuddling. I remember being sick and digusted with this program for 3 years. Not because of the coach, not because of the traditions changed...because we were getting our shit kicked in on the regular. Rich Rod could've done white pants on the road or maize home uniforms for a game if it would've put more W's on the board.

I feel like we're not in the right to complain about anything until we're truly back in BCS/National Title contention on the regular. That was the worst 3 years of my Michigan Football memory. I'm not far enough removed to give a damn about anything other than W's. Call me in 4 years if we have a 6-2 or better record vs. Ohio/MSU, at least 1 NC, multiple B1G Championships, a Heisman and a Rose Bowl victory...if we can get all that, then maybe I'll worry about Shane, Dymonte or David Dawson switching their number in their senior year.

Ugh...the Florida State game.  It actually was closer than the score indicated but that didn't make it any less painful.  FSU fans ripped out pieces of the big house turf to take home with them.  It's generally regarded down there as one of their top and favorite victories.

Bo got that game scheduled after Nebraska had dropped what would have been a home & home with us for the 1991 and 1992 seasons.  After dumping us, the Huskers scheduled Washington for those 2 seasons instead and got thumped in both.  Bo called Bobby Bowden to replace the home and home but FSU could only play one game because their '92 schedule was already completed.  So a coin toss decided that it would be played at the big house, not that it ended up mattering.

My hate for the Seminoles started that day and continued through the years as the media became more and more obsessed with St. Bobby Bowden and the Florida schools.  The only time I ever rooted for them was when they played against Notre Dame.  Although I did enjoy watching them destroy the Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl.

I've very much enjoyed FSU's demise to mediocrity this past decade.

Hated my Sec. 9 Row 10 seats, so we made our way to the student section, ~30 yard line.  Packed (PACKED) in like sardines...everyone standing on the benches.  Sideways.  Had to dip a shoulder and turn to watch as the LOS moved from one side to the other.  With the up-tempo pace, it was like a tennis match, back and forth, up and down the field.

Using a Howard Cosell voiceover would work to describe the overall game...two heavyweights: one the old guard, the other, the challenger, a young up-and-comer.  With shot after shot exchanged, the youngster survives, outlasts his opponent, and walks off the field...bruised, bloodied, but victorious.
