Turley: Nevermind Comment Count

here's a picture of this dude in a dumb hat to make you feel better

Well, this is annoying: Shannon Turley apparently isn't coming after several outlets and Cardinal players said he was. Neither is Stanford DC Lance Anderson, but that was always a longshot what with Mattison and Durkin set to split coordinator responsibilities. Turley's apparent about-face is a bigger deal, since he's a great candidate at an important spot.

Hopefully we'll get some confirmations on Drevno/Durkin/Mattison today.

JH is a motivator, of players and coaches.  He will expect a lot of coaches and hold them accountable for falling short.  Regardless of who is hired, for any position, they won't coach on an island.  Harbaugh was the big hire, he'll fill out his staff and Michigan will be fine.  No panic needed, this time.

Sam Webb offered some commentary this morning suggesting that first, Michigan would offer a rebuttal to Turley's reversal back to Stanford. Second that an unnamed Big 12 S&C coach was in the mix, and may still be if Turley in fact is set in his decision to stay at Stanford. Also the 49ers Kevin Tolbert's name was mentioned as an option.

Given that Brian is reporting this now I would assume Michigan has moved on to the other candidates Webb has suggested.

If Coach Harbaugh really admires this form of S&C, then I would imagine he might ask Turley or Torbert for a recommendation of a qualified up & comer assistant who is ready for a head gig.

As for premature Hello posts, etc., best not to get too excited about unconfirmed reports about coaches until they're signed and introduced and players until they send in their letters of committment.

I'm sure Harbaugh will land an excellent coaching staff and, in time, recruit great players to Michigan. Perhaps this can serve as a reminder to some, however, that not everyone in the world is dying to come to Ann Arbor, even with JH as HC. Optimism is fine, but some posters here seem a little out of touch with reality sometimes.

Statue would have S&C experts as part of the academic staff or have numerous connections. What does this one person know that our resources don't.

I have to imagine that there are some other good candidates out there.  A strength and conditioning coach, I'm completely guessing, is easier to find then a head coach or a coordinator?  Please???

I'd imagine it's like any other specialized field really.  The mediocre yet qualified are a dime a dozen.  The best are worth their weight in gold.

As long as we adhere to high standards we should be fine, but if Turley's walked from the table then it could take a while.

IT came down to two things: (1) Palo Alto; and (2) big ass raise.  The Palo Alto draw is big for the famlies of these dudes.  And relocating 2,000 miles east is tough on them.  I'm not discouraged at all.  It would have been nice, but in Harbaugh I Trust.  The dude will get it done!!!

Brian, you should re-edit your Hello post to point out that Turley is a gawd damn liar!

But yeah, it sucks, but I'm sure there are other S&C guys out there.

That really sucks because A: he's the best, 2: he's proven at developing talent safely, and D: I already thought we landed him, so now I want him at Michigan.

Breakfast, shmeakfast. Look at the coaches, for Christ's sake. It's only January and I'm up 2 to 0. Breakfasts come and go, Renee, but Stanford, "the Card," they only outbid Michigan once, maybe twice in a lifetime.

I have a cousin who's a Stanford grad, and she told me that Turley wasn't coming to Michigan because he's thin skinned and upset at the fans for making fun of his hat.

Is Tolbert really far behind this guy?  I find it hard to believe there is a large difference in strength philosophies.

There are huge differences in philosophies.  For example this guy and Barwis are two completely different philosophies.  His focus is on functionalt strength, not how much you can bench press or dead lift.  There is a real lack of science in the  strenght and conditioning field so there is a lot of deviations.

I liked the way this guy sounded but was surprised we got him when he didn't go to the 49'ers originally.  I also don't believe that he had agreed and backed out.  I think that was Michigan sources seeing an actual offer and believing that to mean done deal.

we aren't seeing a retraction for Jim Harbaugh and that was my worry for a while until it was obvious that it's happening.  Surely many of these assistants that have had success within their niche use offers such as from M and Harbaugh to get raises.  Hey guys I really wanna stay but Michigan is offering me double what you guys are paying me now...       Guess I can't blame them.   Also, I remember hearing about Barres (spelling?) when RR came in and it was all about lean and mean faster stronger lighter and we all know how that worked out.  Its about the head coach mostly if you ask me.

It's great to see that we can generate nearly the same amount of media chatter, most of it complete BS, over our choice of assistant coaches.  Witness the power of the Harbaugh!

For the last two years, we've been in a dark place with only occasional scraps of moldy bread and rotten fruit to eat.  Now, we are in a Malibu beach house with a private chef-and we were just told the market is out of filet mignon, so we'll have to settle for prime rib.

Try this, it's worked for me lately whenever I'm feeling sad.  Just say "Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh".  Smile.  Repeat as necessary.

I'm scarred forever. FWIW, Ira on WTKA looked up the résumé of that Big 12 guy who supposedly was interested and said the guy's background was very impressive. I think it's moot anyhow- Tolbert seems like the logical Plan B

We were super happy for a little while.  So, there's that.

And that ridiculous hat also makes me feel better.

So, who now?  I guess rumors don't mean much, but I wonder if there are any college/NFL S&C names floating around.

[talking on the phone]
Scott: Jim? Scott. Just got off the phone with Coach Shaw.
Jim Harbaugh: No, you didn't!
Scott: I'm surprised he even called me.
Jim: Scott, I got Turley for 750K and he doesn't coach anywhere else, cuz that's the deal you made.
Scott: Well he just upped it to 775.
[Jim doesn't answer]
Scott: You there?
Jim: We had a deal, Scott.
Scott: We have a deal, if it's eight.
Jim: Oh, man! You played me.
Scott: I'm just doing my job...
Jim: No, you're playing me and you're still playing me. Congratulations, asshole! You win.
[he hangs up the phone]
