HARBAUGH HARBAUGH HARBAUGH: HOORAY. I hope you guys like rollercoasters. Yesterday it was all sun and butter, because when the money comes in someone's hearing something:

Note that this is not a "who will be Michigan's coach" prop, it's a "where will Harbaugh be" prop. The sportsbook had a low maximum bet on this event (2k) but had so much Harbaugh-to-M action coming in that they couldn't set the odds high enough to discourage it, and thus yoinked the bet.

At the same time this was going on the insider rumble got near-fervent at Rivals, partially from unofficial sources, partially from official ones. For the first time it really felt like it was happening; I heard some chatter that Schlissel and the regents have been brought into discussions. That implies that negotiations reached the part where numbers are involved.

The only pause came last night when Sam re-iterated that a couple of his sources were skeptical, and even he later said he thought Harbaugh was probable. Hooray! Stack the pancakes and get the syrup catapult out, we're having Harbaugh for brunch!

HARBAUGH HARBAUGH HARBAUGH: HELP. Then this morning the NFL guys weighed in with the same thing they've been saying since it became clear Harbaugh was headed somewhere else after the season: nope. Many of them did so.

The problem with these assertions is that many of them contain nonsense within them. CBS:

While many are connecting Harbaugh to the opening at Michigan, where he was a star quarterback, sources close to the coach maintain he is not interested. Harbaugh's family has close ties to outgoing Michigan coach Brady Hoke and Harbaugh is much more interested in NFL possibilities.

Ties to Brady Hoke are not a reason to not take the Michigan job. I'm sure these guys are all getting information from people who know something about something, but they seem to just repeat it without considering whether or not that source is reliable in this matter. The story goes on to assert that Steven Ross "could" end up being the primary competition with the Raiders for his services when people have reported that his focus at the moment is getting him to Ann Arbor—and away from the Jets.

So I'm skeptical of that, but poke an NFL insider today and he's saying Harbaugh to Michigan ain't happening. Ian Rapoport said Michigan "reached out" and "left convinced he wants to be an NFL coach"; FWIW he is the guy who asserted a few weeks ago that Ross wanted Harbaugh at M.

So the usual, with all sides escalating. Someone's going to look dumb.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

MORE PLAN B STUFF. Michigan is still focused heavily on Harbaugh and will be until he gives them a flat no. But they're not putting all their eggs in one basket, which is an improvement from the 2007 search (no basket, eggs anywhere and everywhere) and the 2011 search (basket reads "HARBAUGH!!! hoke i guess). I get the impression that Michigan is contacting a lot of people, either because it's a good idea or because it's the ultimate smokescreen.

So I have a series of unconfirmed reports, all about different people who have had the proverbial feelers extended to them. Along with the guys mentioned yesterday (Whittingham, Mullen, Addazio, Mora) I've had blips on David Shaw, Mora (again) and even Gary Patterson. Patterson is unlikely unless his team misses the playoff—we'll know that today. Previous reports that he'd flat turned M down are premature but likely to be correct in the long run.

And… ugh… people keep talking about Greg Schiano, who Florida passed over for a third year coach with a 7 million dollar buyout and Nebraska passed over for a 62-year-old. Scout's Brian Dohn reports($) that Schiano is making a "strong push for the job" after turning Michigan down in 2007; it should be noted that the strong push is coming from the Schiano side of things… which like yeah duh. I haven't heard anything about the interest being reciprocal.

In re: Schiano's attractivness. Nope! He had one really good year in 2006, and then spent the next five years going 16-19 in the post-defection Big East. He deserves credit for rebuilding Rutgers, but his star has collapsed since he seemed plausible in 07.

ON THE ACCESSIBILITY OF MULLEN. I forgot to include a link to a Matt Hinton piece on Grantland describing the various ways in which Mullen has cobbled together a top ten team from discarded ham and kumquat-flavored toothpaste. Hinton includes a couple of charts that demonstrate how impressive Mullen's season has been and why he's liable to GTFO of Starkville at the first reasonable opportunity:

I cross-referenced every player listed this week on official depth charts released by Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M against their original recruiting rating, and on paper, at least, the difference between the top of the division and the ostensible bottom is a yawning chasm:

14-10-09-sec-west-recruiting-chart[1][8]

Mullen’s only five-star signee, sophomore defensive lineman Chris Jones, is listed as a backup; of the four-stars on hand, only four of the eight are listed as starters, all on defense: senior defensive tackles P.J. Jones and Kaleb Eulls, sophomore linebacker Beniquez Brown, and senior safety Justin Cox. Everyone else on the no. 3 team in the nation, by the standards of the rest of its own division, arrived as an afterthought.

And this is a considerable improvement on MSU's previous recruiting! It is super-hard to maintain against that kind of recruiting thunder in a division where Hugh Freeze might be the worst coach. (Seriously. Who is the worst coach in the SEC West?)

And Scout's Jamie Newberg says "he just knows" that Mullen would leave for the Michigan job if offered it.

CUMONG MAN. The hotdog rumors will not die:

Last January Payton signed an $8-million-per-year extension that extends to the 2017-18 season. It makes him the highest-paid coach, period. Buying him out of that and giving him a commensurate contract is a financial commitment on par with those debunked Godfather offers, and presumes he wants to leave the Saints franchise he's been with since 2006. Also, all he has to do is suck less than the Falcons to make the playoffs this year. This doesn't pass basic common sense.

CUMONG MAN II. Gil "Thorpe" Brandt has a case to make for Schiano:

It is not a good case. The NFL does not like him one bit. Also: remember how we thought Nebraska's search was nuts? They could have hired Schiano in a hot second. Schiano is the only way Michigan can come out of this hiring troika with a guy the other two definitively passed on.

Etc.: Les Miles tells a recruit he's not going anywhere. I think he thinks that's true because he thinks he's not going to get a sniff. Here is a comprehensive rundown of everything that's been said so far.

Seems crazy. I'm surprised at the number of Michigan fans who apparently don't factor in the difficulty of recruiting at Mississippi State. State's gone 6-2, 3-5, and 4-4 in the SECW, which matches up against 5-3, 5-3, and 7-1 in the B1G, but State has done it with a worse recruiting base because Mississippi gets eviscerated by all the neighboring SEC schools.

I can't buy that Hackett hasn't gotten a yes or no answer yet from Harbaugh.  I'd believe it if it were DB or Matin, but Hackett would've asked straight up and moved on of the response was "No" even "I'll know in three weeks" (which is just as good as a No on this situation).

that everything is going to fall through and Michigan is going to strike out on Harbaugh, Miles, Stoops, Mullen, and every other viable coaching candidate.

They may not end up with Steve Addazio, but really it wouldn't shock me. Meanwhile OSU is on the brink of a national championship with their 50 year old coach. Who rode his 2nd and 3rd string QBs to a B1G championship behind an offensive line as young as Michigan's. And is 3-0 against Michigan at OSU.

OSU went out and got their big-name hire, Alabama went out and got their big-name hire, and look where they are now. If/when Michigan strikes out and we're wallowing in despair 5 years from now, with an 8-game losing streak to OSU, that's all you'll need to say to understand why.

Seriously how is that sleaze still allowed to roam a coaching box in college? Dude makes a mockery of the NCAA. What I can't understand is every school he leaves gets put on probation the year after he leaves. Hmm I wonder what the common thread is there? As far as the coaching search goes, I'm a realist. But something is telling me that Jim is coming back to AA. He is definitely done in SF and despite the reports, I don't think they want to deal him right across the Bay. What I wouldn't give to make the short drive to see a JH coached Michigan team take the field in the Rose Bowl!

It will definitely be hard to deny the slide. We could fall back on, "Shitty timing, man!" before. In 2007 we could say, "Hey, if LSU's not playing for the National Championship, Miles ends up at Michigan" (notwithstanding those who were working to make sure it didn't happen regardless). In 2010-11 we could say, "Hey, Harbaugh had his chance to go the highest level and took it, I mean, what would you do?". If Michigan comes away with Schiano or some other form of Hoke 2.0, it's going to be tough to spin after the third time. And with RR's success out West (and he's not going away, regardless of what happened Friday), there will be absolutely zero sympathy from the media. Negative echo chamber feeding frenzy.

Self-inflicted.

Michgan is the kind of program that can rise back to the top in short order.  Just like Alabama did.  Just like Oklahoma did.  Just like UCLA is doing and Texas will do.

We just have to get out of our own way.

It's amazing how hard it seems to be for the winningest football team in the country to hire a Big Time Coach.
I would love to have a coach who will really focus on how to beat Ohio State, like Schembechler. If you can figure out how to beat Ohio, you'll win a lot of other games too.

The mediocre recruiting history at MSU is an excellent argument for his coaching chops, and it explains why he should be desirable to a school like Michigan.  However, it is not sufficient reason for him to leave.

1.  There is a precedent of acceptance. Many head coaches are willing to live with lesser recruiting rankings.  Examples:  Belloti and Kelly didn't bail at Oregon.  Briles and Patterson have always lost elite in-state prospects to Texas, Oklahoma, TAMU, just as MSU will lose elite guys to other SEC powers. Riley turned down USC and all it's prestige to scour rural Oregan for serviceable parts.  Rodriguez turned down Alabama.  Schiano turned down Michigan.  (There is an even longer list of examples who DO leave for better talent but that brings me to the next point.)

2. MSU's recruiting profile is upwardly mobile.  It's an SEC school, with elite facilities (as of last year), an elite coach, and it's starting to win.  That last point is critical.  Winning on the field leads to winning on the recruiting trail.  Look at the talent Oregon got in the 90s and 00s compared to now.  Look at how many top 50 in-state recruits Baylor got a decade ago compared to now.  MSU can easily pull from Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Texas and we've seen what Ole Miss can do in recruiting.

3.  Recruiting rankings matter, but they aren't a full picture. The whole SEC-style of recruiting allows Mullen to use JUCOs and supports larger class sizes and gray-shirt shenanigans, not to mention minimal academic expectations.  These things can bleed into recruiting rankings (as many suggested they did for Thomas Rawls.)

4.  Recruiting is easier.  MSU may not have the upside that Michigan does, but Mullen can land solid talent without ever boarding a plane.  He and his staff don't have fly to California and Florida and New Jersey and Arizona and Washington to fill out their recruiting classes.  This takes a ton of time that can be spent in other ways. (film room, family, you name it.)

5. His current recruiting class is ranked in the top 20, better than Michigans. (This really goes to point 2, but it's proof that it's already happening, right now.)

6.Recruiting bias.  Kids that go to big name schools often get a bump, so their classes are probably overrated by at least some small amount.  Furthermore, you can make a strong case that a bunch of athletic 3-star southerners are better than 4-star midwesterners.  MSU put a whoopin on Michigan's 4-star talent back when we had the PAC12 coach of the year on our sideline.

------

I'm not saying Mullen is better off recruiting at MSU than Michigan, but he could be down the line.  The point is, recruiting is not enough to overcome all the other reasons for him to stick at MSU.

Brian,

I really just want to hear your odds on JH coming here. Sam Webb and others don't really have my trust/respect like you and your site does. Will you please give us your personal opinion in terms of percentage probability?

A few things:

1) As others have said, people need to stop freaking out about Schiano.  There have been ZERO alleged sources from inside Michigan saying they are looking at him as a candidate.  All the leaks have been in the context of Schiano being interested & floating his own name.  All the interest is coming from his end, not Michigan's.

2)  Based on people's behavior, it seems at the minimum, Harbaugh has not given Hackett a clear 'no' at this point.  Otherwise the leaks and rumors would have picked up steam in another direction and away from Harbaugh.  Hackett has no interest in letting the UofM fan base thinking they've got a chance with Harbaugh for weeks on end and then letting them down later on, if in fact he knows it's a no-go at this point.  If he wants to make a splash, the smart play (if he knew Harbaugh was a no), at this point would be to let the wind out of the sails now for a week or two, then pump up the rumor mill again with a solid #2 pick for a week or two for folks to start getting excited again.

3) Not only do people need to consider the reporter/mouthpiece (i.e. whether the analysits or reporter is any good generaly), but to also consider the reliability of the sources in context  For example, if media analyist X says that somebody from Michigan's camp says ABC---is that analyist X known for having solid connections to Michigan's camp?  That analyist coudl have great NFL contacts, an could be viewed as a good reporter generally, but if they are indicating their sources is coming from a place where they do not have traditional connections, you've got to consider the quality there.

So really it's a two step process:  1)  Is this reporter a hack generally?  And if not, 2) are they sufficiently labeling where their source came from generally, and is that reporter known for having solid sources from that angle?  I'm much more likely to trust somebody reporting on what the Michigan AD department thinks, who is traditionally on the Michigan sports beat and is always hanging out around Schembechler Hall, rather than listsen to some guy with NFL sources camped out with the Oakland Raiders or New York Jets.  So for example, this mornign when I see CBS or other NFL sources saying "Michigan has said they contacted Harbaugh and left discouraged" or some such thing---why would Michigan people leak to the NFL or CBS?  They'd be much more likely to leak to a local Detroit media/Michigan sports reporter.  On the flip side, if I hear reports about Harbaugh discussing things w/ the Raiders or Jets, I'm going to doubt the veracity of that if it's coming from a Michigan/Detroit based local sports reporter, whereas if it's a reporter on the Raiders or Jets NFL beat, I'm more likely to buy that.

I am done with this and moving on from Harbaugh. I fully expect Michigan to screw this up somehow.

bighouse22

December 7th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^

I am no longer certain about Harbaugh's intentions.  I have been optimistic until today.  Too many reports about no interest in Michigan.

Add on top of that Tim Kawakami from the Mercury News posted a photo from earlier today where Harbaugh made a beeline for Mark Davis of the Raiders prior to the game.  In and of itself it means nothing, but it is curious.  There is also a lot of chatter regarding the possibility of Harbaugh to Oakland.  York and Davis were both talking quite a bit earlier today after Harbaugh's interaction with Davis.

Not sure how common it is for a rival Head Coach to stop by and talk with the other teams owner.

Hope it's not true, but really dissapointed if this is how it shakes out.

If he wants to ever coach at Michigan, this is his shot.  I don't think he gets another opportunity.

At Michigan he could have been immortalized, if he wins a Super Bowl so what.  I doubt anyone builds a statue or names buildings about him.  It will be back to obscurity if he ever gets there in the first place.

Blown opportunity!  Things will never be this aligned for one candidate again!  This was like OSU with Urban.

Thanks, Brian! for the rare Sunday front page news. I honestly had a dream last night of the MGoBlog front page post announcing Harbaugh as our next coach. Either (1) a premonition or (2) a sign that I'm spending way too much time reading MGoBlog and thinking about Jim Harbaugh! Even my iPhone autocorrect recognizes "Harbaugh" now!

I couldn't be more confident with the way things are proceeding right now with this search. I believe that Hackett is executing a precise and masterful plan. First, he has lined up everything right now to ensure that M has everything in place so that JH is not disuaded by anything from the M camp. Everybody from M is lined up behind JH and unified. The Carr comment, the Van Bergen letter, the discussions with both the current and former players, the crackdown on all leaks, and even lining up the financing and donors, particularly Ross, behind the pursuit of JH. All of this does not mean that JH will decide to come to M in the end, but if that is the call it is due to his own personal reasons, and no disunity or mistakes on the M end. Second, he is conducting a thorough search of all other candidates via the firm. From all the other input we are getting, it is clear that the initial feelers have gone out across the country to the Pattersons, Moras, Mullens, and Stoops of the world. Does not mean that any of them will reall want to come, or that any of them are "front runners." If JH says no, the groundwork is completely laid to understand where to go next. Given the lack of demand in the college ranks, and JH's current employment situation, Hackett can afford to be measured and thorough. There is no reason to panic at this point. There is no reason to assume any front runner. Coaches like Schiano and Addazio will want to pump up the rumors in their favor, obviously. We will know a lot more in the middle of this week. If we do not have a college coach on board, we will know we are waiting for a JH decision, or are waiting for him to close up shop with his old job.

big john lives on 67

December 7th, 2014 at 4:59 PM ^

I just mean that if we have JH's "no" at this point, we will move agressively toward a coach currently in the college ranks at this point. There will be nothing left holding these coaches up from moving at this point since there are no candidates in the playoff. If JH is still considering, or more optimistically, he has already said "yes," we will still have to slow play the search until JH decides/and or is done with his season with SF.

I'll have what you're having, because I have absolutely zero confidence that Michigan will get Harbaugh.

What worries me at this point isn't so much whether or not we get Harbaugh. I've resigned to the belief he's not coming, and I'm okay with that. What worries me is how many down years and blows to the chest Michigan can take before the damage to the program's image is irreparable?

Yes, we've got money and facilities, but every down year brings on more pessimism from the fanbase, more infighting, and with it, potentially less donations. There's zero buzz around this program, and recruits are growing up in a world when the last time Michigan was good was when they were 9-10. Many of them were maybe 3-4 years old the last time we beat a non Fickell-coached OSU team. Simply put, this is not a "cool" program to go to anymore. Recruits don't give two shits about who Fielding Yost or Bo Schembechler are. I'm afraid unless someone can come in and turn that around immediately, our image will be so torn apart that it'll be impossible for us to ever get an A-List coach, or ever be thought of as a destination job again.

Clearly One Thing Must Be Clear
At this point Hackett knows the answer for Harbaugh. Yes or no! Harbaugh comes here if he wants to be a Michigan coaching legend, otherwise stay in the NFL. If Hackett does not have this answer now, he is incompetent. Money and timing are then just details to be worked out. I am very concerned that a guy who just a few weeks ago had little involvement with the AD is making the decision on our new coach. Would have preferred to have a committee of students, players, alums, coaches. Of course, unless he brings in Jimmy H. We have a tight end(Butt) and a fullback(Kerridge), so Bo would be happy.

A.  We've done everything we can on our end to make us an attractive option for our top candidate.  No internal dissent (at least publicly), no "official" leaks, no public pressure - we've let him know he's our top choice and not put him in a corner or given him a deadline.

B.  At the same time, we've decided on our next-tier candidates and started doing our homework in case our top choice doesn't want to come.

I have shifted my belief that we don't get Harbaugh to "if we don't get Harbaugh it's because he decided he'd rather do something else like win a Super Bowl".  It's all about the neurons now - Go Blue Neurons!

Plan A: is of course pursue Harbaugh to the end! Hopefully he will say NO or YES when his season is over.

Plan B: Any one of the following will be a good hire for Michigan. Miles, Mullen or Bob Stoops, or another successful D-1 coach we can pry away. We need one of the plan B guys if Harbaugh says NO!

Plan C: I don't see one. I think if we end up with a Schiano type coach, our football program will be awful for years and every year we will be asking Jim to be our coach!

This is going to be torture. On one hand, the constant reports of my mailman's brother's wife's cousin's babysitter's nephew's grandmother's second husband's step-son who works in the NFL says Harbaugh will say_______ to Michigan are getting old. On the other hand, the longer we don't hear anything, isn't that a good sign? It only takes a second to say, "no.". But in the back of my head, I keep having this nagging feeling (as if the last 7 years wasn't proof enough) that Michigan isn't allowed to have nice things. So get rid of the pipe dream.

Was it because the oddmakers could not handle all the bets quickly enough?  One link suggested that rather it was because the influx of money suggested insider information.

FWIW

"Carrie Stroup here with an urgent betting alert from Gambling911.com regarding Jim Harbaugh 2015 Coaching odds and the Michigan Wolverines.

“We have been advised by Sportsbook.ag that all bets on Harbaugh’s future have been suspended due to an unusual betting pattern suggesting inside information on the 49ers head coach taking over the Michigan Wolverines program.

“We suspended Jim Harbaugh 2015 coaching odds as money came pouring in on Michigan late yesterday afternoon,” advised Matt James of Sportsbook.ag.  “The odds went from 8-1 all the way down to 2-1, before we closed the event.
“What was even more concerning than the money was the location of the accounts betting Michigan, as the majority of them located in the state of Michigan!”

I would be curious to know when/if the betting resumes, where the odds settle.,  A lot of information that is publicized could be designed to alter those odds--even if temporarily--in order to profit from the spread.

When you read SF fans comments they are ready for JH to leave. The Raiders want him, and so does Miami, but JH has an ego and I think Michigan is getting more appealing. Why not Michigan? He knows that we desperately believe in him and his ego wants that to be the case. Comments from players are his "style" is more college-oriented. Michigan actually seems like the better fit. He hasn't said, No, which means he hasn't rule it out. The loss today means they are almost out of playoff hope. It really could happen and it makes sense to happen.
