1. Spring Game - Offense

starts at 1:00

It's been so long since there was a spring game we could actually talk about. Instead of a punting exhibition we got Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum smack-talking each other from across the field. It was fun. Davis Warren looked to be functional, Bowman maybe not as much. Yes, Alex Orji's name is pronounced the way you think it is. Mullings might be the closest to replacing Hassan Haskins as the power back (Wisconsin recruited him for running back, after all). Idaho... Almost impossible to grade the offensive line based on how much it was mixed around but the starting five are probably decided anyways. Comment below if you think Seth should UFR the Spring Game!

2. Spring Game - Defense

starts at 27:13

All eyes on Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil, who both looked good. Going to need the corners to step up this year. Not sure if there's anyone to replace Dax Hill in the slot, it might be Sainristil. Have yet to see McBurrows who is still recovering from injury. Hill-Green looks to be atop the linebackers (he got pulled early meaning he's a guy). Back-up linebackers are pretty meh. If Brian was a walk-on QB he would wear 37 so that if he completed one pass he would be the best #37 of all time. In general, the defensive line did not get obliterated which is encouraging. Mason Graham might be Ryan Glasgow 2.0. Raequan Williams is the MSU player Seth can't remember. Derrick Moore is on his way to be a player. Braiden McGregor got mauled by the tight ends. Moten looked like more of a leader at safety.

3. Hot Takes and Basketball

starts at 51:40

Takes hotter than Caleb Love merchandise and NIL rights. Double pass should be the flea flicker of 2022 - Brian wants a flea flicker hook and ladder. DeVante' Jones has declared for the NBA draft but Hunter Dickinson has not. Moussa would likely get drafted if he goes, Hunter might not. Michigan needs shooters from the portal. Kansas State combo guard Nijel Pack is someone to keep an eye out for in the transfer portal but he'll be heavily recruited by everyone. Seth thinks Michigan men's basketball has some of the best coaches in the Big Ten, the team was limited by shooting and roster mis-management.

4. U.S. Soccer

starts at 1:34:22

Brian has run out of things to talk about and has decided to talk about U.S. Soccer and the World Cup. How many times will Brian say "Michigan" instead of "U.S."? U.S. plays great at home but not on the road. Can the U.S. handle the climate? Brian expresses heavy feelings about Clemens.

Roster mis-management as in too many recruited to functionally play the same position or as in some players played too much/too little? Either way, that is on the coaches.

Agree ... I did not get this either.

So, our coaches are the best in the big ten, but suck at evaluating recruits/transfers as far as shooters, and suck at roster management.  So is this basically saying other Big Ten coaches really, really suck since they are worse than ours?

The 'mis-management' is incidental. No body could have predicted Johns would regress year after year or, hell, that he would go from a NCAA tournament starter to Division II level preformer in less than a year. Diabate was a mouth-watering prospect that no program would refuse.

The cupboard was left bare with Zeb Jackson not having figured things out and Devin Nunez being just a body.

The staff made the sweet 16, and had a top 20 offense all season. Yes, it is probably the best coaching staff in the Big Ten. They are damn good, sorry. If you think this says more about how bad the rest of the coaches in the BIG are, then so be it cause yeah, they fucking blow.

Haven't listened yet, but haven't seen this mentioned by anyone: why is the offense back to huddling??? Please tell me we didn't go backwards in terms of modern football strategy...

I know Brian is obsessed with getting shooting next year and I don't entirely disagree with Brooks leaving and our PGs not being shooters.  But....we had a top 25 offense last year with the "bad" shooting he speaks of.  If we get Houstan back he should be elite.  Jett projects to be a good shooter and take some forward minutes.  TWill will play more if one of the bigs leaves and shot well.  Tschetter should replace Johns minutes and projects to be a good shooter.  Bufkin is a wildcard, but should be fine.

What Michigan needs is a combo guard who can initiate offense and defend.  If he can also shoot that's great...but hard to find all of that.

It’s going to be an interesting off-season for hoops. If we only lose one of Hunter, Diabate and Houstan that gives us one scholarship open. Most likely it will be a post player which makes me wonder if the portal will be used on a big? Maybe someone the size of Johns that can shoot? We don’t have any other open spots for a combo guard.

Houstan should've been elite the moment he walked through the door, at least for shooting.

The home/away split tells me this is a mental thing; he's easily unsettled.  This isn't a problem you can practice your way out of; the familiarity of the practice facility is part of the problem.  Someone please tell me we have a sports psychologist on campus.

Michigan is certainly losing both Brooks and Jones, they were the #2 and #3 in terms of Michigan's 3PT attempts. Houstan was #1 in that category and HD was #4 in that category. I think it's safe to assume that Houstan is back, but I think HD is likely leaving. That means Michigan has to replace three of the top four players in 3PT shot volume.

Sure, TWill looked like a guy who could get more 3PT attempts and would likely still shoot a damn good percentage. But he was 5th in terms of 3PT shot volume.

I don't understand this optimism about Bufkin. He was generally awful this year and made 8 3PT's out of 36(!) attempts. That's really bad. And that's without even mentioning his ghastly defense.

Also, I think people should slow the roll on Jett Howard coming in and being an instant contributor. I think he will be a very good player, but have fans really not learned anything from heaping excessive expectations on freshman?

If HD leaves, Michigan needs to replace over 52% of its 3PT production. Yes, I think we can expect Houstan to improve. But, for all the inconsistencies and early-season disappointment, the kid still shot roughly 36% from 3PT on the season and over 37% in B1G conference play. He has the stroke of a 40% 3PT shooter, so maybe he gets there.

Mortgaging the hopes of this team's offense on improvements from Houstan and TWill as well as expecting immediate contributions from Jett Howard is a mistake.

This roster needs a combo-guard/wing who can defend at a high level and can shoot with accuracy on high volume.

But....we had a top 25 offense last year with the "bad" shooting he speaks of.

We were streaky beyond the arc, but very good at shooting inside it (the Villanova game notwithstanding...).

The issue is that a lot of our good 2-point shooting was due to Dickinson.  If he leaves, we're probably just average there, and then our iffy 3-point shooting becomes a bigger issue.  And we're losing Brooks and Jones, two guys who took/made a lot of threes.

I love listening to Brian and Seth talk football and I agree with almost all of their takes.  Definitely excited about some of the young guys and I'm 100% taking the over on the 5-targets for Clemons.  I couldn't find targets from last year in a quick search, but six players had more than 5 CATCHES.  Next year you figure Bell, Johnson, Wilson, Anthony, Henning are five...and then who's the sixth?

As for basketball....I just don't agree with some of the takes.  Brian literally said he'd be fine with Justin Arhens at the TWO??  Well, he's leaving OSU so he's available.  I know we miss the Beilein days of a cast of shooters, but replacing Brooks with a catch-and-shoot wing?  Brooks was a secondary ball handler, a defender, and a shooter.  We can't go into the season with two non-shooting PGs as our only ball handlers so we can play a no-defense, no ball-handling, stand-still shooter?  No thanks.

Also, I realize that Houstan was over-rated and had a rocky first year, but the guys talk about him like he's Kam Chatman!  He was either the 4th or 5th best freshman in the conference and a top-25 freshman in the country who shot 36% on the season and 39% in the league.  He shot 48% in home games.  He also played 32mpg and got better on defense as the season went on.  Next year if he gets strong, improves his home/road splits, shoots 43% on the season, plays solid defense...that's not an NBA pick and a guy who can play 30 minutes at forward?  Add Jett, Williams, and maybe Tschetter (or Barnes) and we want another wing?

As for the "roster construction" narrative....what were the coaches supposed to do exactly?  I think it is a lazy narrative without presenting a solution.  The REAL problem is that there is no viable Senior or Junior class.  Johns and Nunez....that's it.  You could argue that Juwan could have used Barnes or Tschetter's scholarship on a transfer....but they signed FIRST in the class before we knew we were getting someone else.  You could argue we should have pushed Nunez or Zeb out the door to get s spot...but we don't run the program like that and nor should we.  So where is the roster spot coming from to better manage the roster??

We’ve had All-Americans at #26 and #37 before: Jourdan Lewis and Jarrett Irons respectively.

Brian joyfully mentioning random recruits/players from the late Carr & Rodriguez eras makes me think he’s happy and actually optimistic about the program again.

I am here for more Brian talks soccer. I shouted when he was talking about Timmy Chandler. I'm an avid Bundesliga fan, and have been watching Chandler for years. He's not good. He's not a starter on his club Eintracht Frankfurt. Frankfurt fans I know shrug if you mention Chandler's name.

MLS is a pretty darn good league, and has been steadily getting better. The USMNT defenders bear that out. Zimmerman was a force throughout qualifying. We aren't seeing much Jordan Morris because he and Pulisic play the same spot, but he's a legit attacking force down the wing.

I think there's credence to Brian's reasoning for the European players struggling when they come back to North America for USMNT duty. Going from the pristine fields and ideal conditions of top European football to... <gestures at Trinidad and Tobago> ...is a big adjustment. You can see some of this when first division teams go to play at lower division stadiums for domestic cup games.

The overall trajectory of the team is positive too. I'm not a Berhalter fan, and was not excited about that hire, but the continued improvement of the side is evident. The team doesn't look lost and confused on the field as it so often did under Klinsmann. It feels like Berhalter has a plan, where it felt like Klinsmann was winging it more often than not.

I'm feeling positive about the USMNT right now. Some more soccer content on MGoBlog wouldn't hurt my feelings.
