Introducing The Recruiting Overview Board
Hello. This is an attempt to give you a 1,000 foot view of Michigan's current recruiting class. It lives as a wiki post under the "Useful Stuff" heading as well, and can be updated by anyone with 500+ points.

SCHOLARSHIPS
We assume Michigan will go to 28.
Michigan has 16 open spots right now plus three specialists who may be on one of those "you get the first spot that opens up" kind of deals. In addition there are 2-4 guys who probably won't get fifth years.
Thus Michigan is expecting to lose at least 5-8 current members of the roster (other than fifth years) before Signing Day. (Big Ten rules prevent teams from oversigning unless they can explain where the scholarship is coming from.) That's not an inordinate number given the roster composition, the sudden possibility of NFL interest, and the fact that this is the first year of a new coach. We know of one guy who is already planning a playing-time transfer, FWIW, and there are no doubt more.
CURRENT CLASS SIZE
We are not considering Dele Harding a commit. He was removed from the Rivals commit list and any insider you poke will tell you they don't expect him to end up at Michigan.
We have also heard that some of the camp commits in the class were explicitly offered grayshirt deals. We are not exactly sure who, but depending on how things go Michigan could end up with extra spots in the class as guys reclassify to 2017 or take opportunities for 2016 elsewhere.
In addition, Chris Evans, Kingston Davis, and David Reese have all announced plans to take visits and should be considered soft commits.
So: the current class is somewhere between 14 and 20 guys. Welcome to 'crootin.
ROOM LEFT AND WHO MICHIGAN IS TARGETING
Michigan can take somewhere between 8 and 14 additional players. They are targeting approximately
- one running back
- one wide receiver
- one tight end
- one OL
- one kicker
- two or three DL
- two or three LB
- one or two CB
- one or two S
The only spot that is definitively full right now is QB.

Psyched to see these two play in a couple years. I've missed watching the big, phsyically dominant receivers in the mold of Braylon.

Zeroes are bad. No more zeroes.

I like this. The recruiting sites don't really give you something like this. 247 does, but it can be hard to figure out.

First number is "Number currently committed". Second number is "Number they would like to add".... I think. Not sure why there are "8" CBs listed.

That's what it seems like at first, then you get to DT and below that it gets all fucky. Obviously we'd take Rashan Gary, for example. I guess maybe they have some typos or spots where it says (+1) when it's supposed to say (1+1)? But even still, some spots have conflicting numbers.

especially if we keep Evans. Adding Walker (and/or Nauta) takes it to another level. I also like our Defensive backs.
Now we need D-Lineman and Linebackers. Like, gobs of them.

I'm pretty pumped about this class to say the least. So much potential here. A lot of hype going into the program right now, and I think the success of this class will determine how high the team rises in a couple of years given the upperclassman situation on the defense.
Have complete faith in Harbaugh and crew to develop whoever they bring in, but 2017 defense could be a major question mark if mostly project guys are brought in with this class. Could really use a few of those high 4*/5* defensive targets. Thankfully we are in very good position for a lot of those guys.

Suggestion to repost the header column for the chart before the defensive positions start. If you scroll far enough down, you lose what the title of each column is.

Only one thing's for certain with football recruiting and Harbaugh...

this is true...and he's being considered as an OLB or Safety/LB hybrid from what I've read.

The hell you say...To hear some people talk, it's a sure thing that oft-injured Taysom Hill will be wearing a winged helmet next year.

Good stuff. I'm a little worried about the NT/DT positions, but I guess there are a couple of guys who could move over if needed.
October 23rd, 2015 at 3:16 PM ^
Worst case you could move Onwenu and Wheatley there. Still have Hurst for 2 more years and Mone for 3 years. So unless he gets hurt, Mone will be a backup next year and then starter for 17 and 18. Hurst aside him for 17. Obviously we need 1 in this class to marinate and be ready to be an impact player in 18ish. (or Gary right away) We have bigger issues than DT in next few years. We also need some of these DE guys to pan out like Johnsons and Jones.
Back 7 is all a mystery post Nov 2016 outside of Kinnel and Watson. Dudes like Washington are project types, converted QBs who we hope are corners in a future life etc.
October 23rd, 2015 at 3:24 PM ^
as usual. Why are we still interested in that McCaffery kid, who's a QB?
October 23rd, 2015 at 3:38 PM ^
Because McCaffrey is class of 2017.
