Exit Anthony Campanile After All
Maybe the recruiting guy just really hated recruiting?
Another interesting hire for Brian Flores from the college ranks: The #Dolphins are hiring #Michigan LBs coach Anthony Campanile for a position coach job on the defense, source said. He was Boston College’s co-DC in 2018.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 16, 2020
Campanile apparently passed on DC jobs at BC and Rutgers, the latter of which was supposedly a deal close to seven figures. Now he's going to be a position coach in the NFL… for the team owned by Stephen Ross. We need to work on our So You're A Rich Alum With Money To Throw Around classes.
Maybe this will open up the money to bring Steve Clinkscale back to the table, if he hasn't already signed a new contract with Kentucky. Not a lot of good news around the program right now, so kind of feels unlikely.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:08 PM ^
Along with Solomon, Black, Spanellis, Dwumfour heading out the door to play somewhere else when they would have had playing time here. And, recruiting only brought in one top 100 guy at the same time.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:24 PM ^
Not all of the players on your list chose to leave...at least one of them wasn’t offered another year.
January 16th, 2020 at 10:42 AM ^
Part of the problem with takes like this is Michigan fans only look at Michigan and assume this doesn't happen anywhere else which is wrong. That transfer list is extremely un-worrying. Ok, one promising underclassman, but then an interior lineman who we can probably replace, an injury prone #3 WR (who frankly didn't do much at all this year), and a guy who it sure seems like got a firm handshake. This is a non-issue
January 15th, 2020 at 11:39 PM ^
At least we still have the running back whisperer in Jay Harbaugh.
January 16th, 2020 at 1:23 AM ^
Christ you know it ain't easy, you know how hard it can be -
We lost a Partridge, and now a Campanile...
January 16th, 2020 at 9:45 AM ^
When you have a top defenses year after year, your assistants are desirable, and should move out from under your DC to grow their careers. You wind up with a stale ole' Lloyd Carr coaching tree otherwise.
Who will be our DC after DB retires? Well there are several guys, who went through the DB system, have formed their opinions of the good and the bad, and out there cutting their teeth right now.
Not Mattison mind you, as he is end of career. Great guy in person, and really appreciate him rebuilding under Hoke, and sticking through the transition to Harbaugh and the transition to Brown. If he had gone to say, Oklahoma, I would have been like good for him, thanks for what you've done for Michigan. OSU - understand he probably wanted to stay near to family - but jerk move.
The other people you list above may one day return.
January 16th, 2020 at 11:17 AM ^
I think also, to keep an eye on would be Roy Manning and Derron Montgomery. Both young guys, Manning played and coached at M, but on the flip side, the fact that he is still a position coach might be a little troubling.
Derron Montgomery was a GA during Harbaugh's first year with Jedd Fisch. He's played at ISU, worked at Abilene Christian, Miami, Michigan, and now he's a wr's coach at Georgia. His dad also played and coached in the NFL for a long time.
Hoke is now the coach at SDSU, but I would've been happy with him back in the building as a position coach. He's authentic and good recruiter, just a bit over his head coaching at such a high level. He also probably wouldn't have left as soon as a better job came up.
And I wonder if you promote Devin Bush, does he jump at a possible DC job next year if it's offered?
January 16th, 2020 at 11:46 AM ^
I believe you meant Jesus Christ Partridge?
January 15th, 2020 at 9:30 PM ^
Well, I hope Harbaugh is ready to hire two A++ recruiters because this is not good. Not good at all.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:45 PM ^
My opinion ? Chris Partridge was likely over rated in recruiting. He was the 247 ranked #1 recruiter for the 2017 class. Problem is that class is an almost complete bust, like a sham. Hindsight is 20-20, but that was not a #5 ranked class and CP's accolades are suspect in the rearview mirror.
Edit - hindsight is 20-20 but man this hit result really hurts:

They are going to have to scramble. Be prepared to be underwhelmed.
Sam Webb stating this morning that this was a screw job by Campanile. UM passed on/lost out on good targets because they waited on him to make a decision. He re-signed with UM but continued to look around.
Edit: looks like a Mississippi State guy is being looked at.
January 16th, 2020 at 6:53 AM ^
Be prepared to be underwhelmed.
So...pretty much the status quo, then.
Honestly, that could be Michigan football's new tagline.
January 16th, 2020 at 11:49 AM ^
True or not, Sam is not listenable any longer. Such a slappy. I take most of what he says with a voice in my head that sounds like a cheerleader chant. Seems to be a real nice guy. Love that he loves Michigan. But, him crying and whining when he dogs other programs whining comes across sads and weak.
January 16th, 2020 at 1:32 AM ^
Let's just fucking say what you mean - A++ recruiters carrying bags of $ and the answers to online class exams.
Is there really anything else these schools can offer that Michigan can't or won't?
Let's DEFINITELY get a better hype video producer tho - whatever is spent on that seems worth it. Heard we're falling behind.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:33 PM ^
Harbaugh get your ass working! You've done nothing except weaken your team since getting drilled in your bowl game.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:08 PM ^
Harbaugh didn't have a QB..... he will next year... wait and see... he had the team outplay Alabama for a half, and the team seems to quit on Patterson... They will rally around McCaffrey, or maybe even Milton.
January 16th, 2020 at 2:04 AM ^
I'm confused, did he not have a QB, or did he have a QB, but the team quit on the QB?
January 15th, 2020 at 9:37 PM ^
Does this realistically change our eternal trajectory of going between 8-5 and 10-3 every year? Hard for me to feel bad about losses like this anymore.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:38 PM ^
I laughed.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:40 PM ^
Honestly we can find lots of people to go and convince young adults to come to Michigan. One person is not going to sink our battleship. It’s so pitiful when we are like omg not this person is leaving,”we’ll never be the same!” Please spare me. The bottom line is if you don’t want to get in with the big dogs stay on the porch. We will be fine. There are lots of qualified football like minded personnel in the United States that can easily sell MICHIGAN, as a desirable destination! GO BLUE!
January 15th, 2020 at 9:49 PM ^
Remember when the world was ending because Dan Enos left quickly?
January 15th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
I believe he’s available. Maybe we can bring him back for another two week stint?
January 15th, 2020 at 9:47 PM ^
Do we not have some former talented alumni that are hungry to see the program get back to what it once was and will actually stay for awhile because they love the program?
January 15th, 2020 at 10:06 PM ^
And who would that be exactly? I seriously hope you're not talking about Marcus Ray. Because I am unaware of any alum that actually have coaching experience that want to come back to Michigan and coach.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
Mike Hart would be good. Jay Harbaugh can try his hand at coaching Defense.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
This Jay hate is bizarre.
All his position group did was work solidly this year with development enabling players to pass the respected senior who had earned his scholarship as a walk on.
But sure, crap on the guy with your hot take.
January 16th, 2020 at 8:52 AM ^
Exactly-our running back position is in great shape, maybe the strongest on the team.
January 16th, 2020 at 9:13 AM ^
Not to mention that Jay gets the credit for recruiting Charbonnet, Haskins, and Corum.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:59 PM ^
Shouldn’t the headline be “Michigan Coach to NFL!”
January 15th, 2020 at 10:51 PM ^
That would be the clickbaitiest.
January 16th, 2020 at 12:39 AM ^
+1 for the neologism
January 15th, 2020 at 10:04 PM ^
What often is perceived as good news, isn't, and vice versa.
Not betting against Harbaugh. He will make even better hires.
And McCaffrey should have been playing a season and a half ago.
The best is yet to come.....
January 15th, 2020 at 10:11 PM ^
Early returns arent good with the Tank Wright being in contention for a spot news. Seems like the staff is going to do nothing this offseason to get better but promote from within. At least the past two years, they have gotten Warriner and Gattis.
January 16th, 2020 at 7:31 AM ^
It's funny how people think they're in any position to evaluate a guy like Tank Wright. Same with Campanile. The guy was here one year. We have no idea how good he really was. But people want to read into everything as negatively as possible.
January 16th, 2020 at 7:52 AM ^
Somebody thought Campanile was good enough to be a position coach in the NFL.
January 16th, 2020 at 8:26 AM ^
I don't get why people keep saying this. Over the last few years Harbaugh has gotten Campanile, Gattis, Warriner, Brown, Nua, Moore from outside the program. I think Jaybaugh and McDaniels are the only internal promotions I can think of. And BTW, 2 years ago, after firing Mgoblog darling Matt Canada, Ed Orgeron promoted his tight ends coach and holdover from Les Miles era to OC. Imagine how underwhelming that must have felt at the time. Worked out pretty damn good.
January 16th, 2020 at 9:16 AM ^
McDaniels was an outside hire when he was brought in as an analyst. So you could say that he was also an external hire. Overall, Harbaugh has been very good at finding assistants.
January 16th, 2020 at 10:12 AM ^
" Ed Orgeron promoted his tight ends coach and holdover from Les Miles era to OC. Imagine how underwhelming that must have felt at the time. Worked out pretty damn good. "
Ed Orgeron promoted his tight ends coach and holdover from Les Miles era to OC. They were #38 in points per game. Behind 2018 Michigan.
He lasted one year, and was replaced by Joe Brady.
Joe Brady worked out pretty damn good.
January 17th, 2020 at 8:33 AM ^
He did not last one year, he is still OC. Joe Brady was passing coordinator.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:07 PM ^
The larger question is why are so many coaches ready to jump from Harbaugh and Michigan (especially odd when you consider that Marrow and Clinkscale have shown great loyalty to Stoops and UK)?
January 15th, 2020 at 10:13 PM ^
Nobody jumped.
Durkin was ready and itching to be a head coach, and didn't have an offer yet...and Harbaugh knew this and convinced him to come.
Mattison had a long history with Meyer and wanted to be DC again...
Al Washington always was a Buckeye and wanted that end and Harbaugh still convinced him to coach here. But I will cede this one.
Campanile was ready for bigger things, and turns down DC job at BC....wouldn't be staying as a position coach here when he is in demand.
Perhaps you prefer Carr's MO instead, whereby he gets non-alpha lifers....worked well for him, but thats not what Harbaugh is doing. So be it.
Zordich has stayed awhile, so has Brown, so will Warinner. Pep was jettisoned but he stayed long and would have stayed longer.
The best is yet to come....
January 15th, 2020 at 10:20 PM ^
I just want a program with a hunger to get better. Meyer got Kevin Wilson from indiana. Alex Grinch from WSU etc. We cant get anyone better than an internal assistant strength and conditioning coach? Really?
January 16th, 2020 at 7:34 AM ^
You mean the guy coaching Oklahoma's shitty defense?
January 16th, 2020 at 9:19 AM ^
Harbaugh got Gattis from Alabama. He also got Don Brown from BC. He also got Durkin from Florida.
January 16th, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
Wants a program with hunger to get better- thinks its terrible when assistant coaches work hard enough to get promotions and NFL jobs.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
Mattison, Washington, Fisch, Wheatley, Campanile all jumped. Indisputably.
January 16th, 2020 at 9:25 AM ^
Mattison - left for a promotion and pay raise
Washington - left for a promotion and pay raise, and to coach at a place where he grew up
Fisch - wanted to be a HC, or in the NFL (and that's where he is)
Wheatley - left for a promotion and is now a HC
Companile - left for an NFL job and a pay raise
Partridge - left for a promotion and pay raise
This isn't 'jumping', its good people getting promotions - something good people tend to get.
January 16th, 2020 at 2:54 PM ^
No one turns down a college DC position for an NFL position coaching spot. BC and Rutgers chose other ppl and not AC. We have to stop doing this! Just because a guy stays doesn’t mean he chose Michigan over the upgraded position.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
Huh turns out Stephen Ross still blows. I’m shocked.
