Exit Anthony Campanile After All
Maybe the recruiting guy just really hated recruiting?
Another interesting hire for Brian Flores from the college ranks: The #Dolphins are hiring #Michigan LBs coach Anthony Campanile for a position coach job on the defense, source said. He was Boston College’s co-DC in 2018.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 16, 2020
Campanile apparently passed on DC jobs at BC and Rutgers, the latter of which was supposedly a deal close to seven figures. Now he's going to be a position coach in the NFL… for the team owned by Stephen Ross. We need to work on our So You're A Rich Alum With Money To Throw Around classes.
Maybe this will open up the money to bring Steve Clinkscale back to the table, if he hasn't already signed a new contract with Kentucky. Not a lot of good news around the program right now, so kind of feels unlikely.

This is highly suspect reporting in that tweet. Turns down $1MM DC contracts to be some random assistant at perennial losing Dolphins ? Smells fishy to me.
Edit ... more speculation
Source: Michigan assistant coach Anthony Campanile is leaving to become an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins. He’d received interest to be a DC at multiple Power 5 jobs this off-season.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
Smells mammalian to me.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:21 PM ^
The $1 million contract was at Rutgers, which is likely to end up with a firing within 3 years.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:30 PM ^
All power 5 DC contracts are at least $1mm per annum in this market. Maybe the Dolphins deal is for the DC job ? That would make sense. But shit it's the Dolphins who suck wind and you have to view that as a 3 year job and your fired as well ... the Dolphins are the Rutgers of the NFL.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:42 PM ^
But also... Miami. Can't be that bad
January 15th, 2020 at 11:37 PM ^
The Rutgers of the NFL, only they have FIVE 1st round draft picks and FOUR second round picks in the next 15 months.

Package deal with Harbaugh
January 15th, 2020 at 11:48 PM ^
Sadly the thing in this article that felt closest to truth was saying this could open up $ & a spot for the Kentucky guy, but it doesn't feel like anything is going to go right at this time so doubt it...

Cute that Brian thinks Stephen Ross is so involved with the Dolphins that he is in on the search for a linebackers coach.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:00 PM ^
Ross didn't choose Campy but he sure as hell could have stopped it.
January 15th, 2020 at 11:46 PM ^
This program just has very little momentum from year to year. It’s always something.

It's a big loss. They'll have to figure out someone to come in hitting the ground running.
I still don't know where this notion Michigan was priced out of a UK position coach, but whatever. Apparently this is the offseason of BPONE v2 for those looking for a fix.

There is more to this story. Stay tuned.

Tease
January 15th, 2020 at 9:39 PM ^
I'm wondering about the "not a lot of good news around the program" comment. To what exactly is he referring? That we lost to OSU again? Lost the bowl game? Lost some players to the NFL and transfer portal? Lost a couple assistants? Those things happen every year. It's not like our coach is being deposed in a wrongful termination lawsuit, or a former player is alleging he was hazed and sexually abused here.
January 16th, 2020 at 1:21 AM ^
See, THIS is why we can't beat osu - we're focused on the high ground rather than putting the best players on the field!
The prize isn't with the Sparrow anymore, it's with the Mudhen...

BPONE is not just a name, it's a lifestyle.
I think Brian is in the process of burning out (if he hasn't already).

If you notice the shift in him occurred once he became a parent. It's fuckin' hard being a parent man, especially the first 5 years or so. You need a lot of patience and energy to deal with kids, sometimes you don't have enough, let alone having anything left in the tank for UM football and MgoBlog BS. That's my theory anyway.

Ages 3-7 were difficult for me before that they’re too cute after that they kinda start getting it.
January 16th, 2020 at 12:42 PM ^
--we got blown out the last two games of the year, again
--there is no indication of change to coaches or strategy
--we have lost our two best recruiters and got poor notices relative to other top programs for the way we recruit lately
--our poor D-line numbers got worse with a guy leaving who would have been a #1 starter this year
--there is literally nothing to point to that would indicate that we are narrowing in any way the large gap between us and OSU. And further there is no outward indication that our 9 win seasons won't continue. There is not any factual indicator that would allow a neutral to say "the arrow is pointing up for Michigan."
Look no one likes a glum, permanent BPONE guy. But if you are emotionally involved with the program with high hopes and repeated declarations of belief in the positive direction of it and the above is all you see, then I don't blame the guy for having his attitude.

THANK YOU!! So tired of the anti-Michigan narrative. We have a bullseye on our backs and are a target-rich environment for the click bait hounds and need it now centric media base.....Every single move or piece of information is sooooo blown out of proportion as it relates to Michigan. Honestly makes me want to tune out until August comes around.

January 15th, 2020 at 9:28 PM ^
So in the last year we've lost Al Washington (LB), Greg Mattison (DL), Christ Partridge (LB), and now Campanile (LB). That's pretty significant bleeding off our defensive assistant ranks.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:32 PM ^
Pretty much our best recruiters

Those are all promotions, so no negative in that attrition. Message to an up-and-coming new hire defensive coaches under Don Brown ? Sky is the limit !
January 15th, 2020 at 9:43 PM ^
Don't you understand? When an assistant coach leaves Michigan it can only mean the sky is falling, the program is collapsing, and things are terrible in Shembechler Hall. There are no other possible explanations.
January 15th, 2020 at 9:55 PM ^
If you're the CEO of a business and your best people keep leaving one of your departments, you're an idiot if you don't thoroughly investigate the situation to make sure that they reason they're leaving doesn't involve something in your department. Automatically chalking it up to "they had good offers elsewhere" is a recipe for ongoing problems.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:07 PM ^
Running a football team and running a business are two very different things. Football coaches change jobs constantly. It's part of the game. Few programs go through an off-season without some type of coaching turnover.
January 16th, 2020 at 1:26 AM ^
And then there's Clemson's DC to shoot that whole theory all to shit...
January 16th, 2020 at 3:33 AM ^
Except none of this who left UM were DCs with multimillion dollar annual contracts.
You should try thinking through your response next time before commenting.
January 16th, 2020 at 10:40 AM ^
Yes, I will pick the ONE notable exception in college football and pretend like it's the norm. Guys like Venables and Bud Foster are the rare exceptions
January 15th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
Man, is this off the mark.... perhaps you should look west towards EL and ask yourself, why aren't their coaches ever poached by better programs ? Harbaugh got guys like Durkin, Mattison, Campanile, all to coach a position when clearly they were more qualified and in demand to coach as coordinators or head coaches...
January 15th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Ohio State coaches: constantly leaving for other programs
Michigan State coaches: NEVER leaving for other programs
Your conclusion: having your coaches leaving for other programs is a terrible sign
6.5.0January 16th, 2020 at 8:26 AM ^
Have you looked around college football and see it’s happening everywhere. Didn’t LSU just win an NC and then a day later have their OC leave. If your good at what you do people come looking for you and your always looking to climb the ladder. It doesn’t mean there is a problem within your organization
January 16th, 2020 at 8:42 AM ^
Football and business are different for starters. Then, your investigation leads to the conclusion that they all left for a promotion and/or more money. It’s not a difficult concept that requires a lot of thinking to figure out.
January 16th, 2020 at 9:35 AM ^
Yes Don, we need a thorough investigation into why Mattison left for a big promotion and double his salary. another one for why Partridge left for a big promotion and more than double his salary. Those are gigantic mysteries and it's likely something rotten in Schembechler Hall is behind it.
I say they consult Brady Hoke to discover how we was able to keep his staff together. He could surely make some hiring suggestions that could avoid ongoing problems of this nature.
January 16th, 2020 at 8:54 AM ^
In the NFL, NE reloads assistants every year. Not a bad thing. Seems like Harbaugh reloads well.
January 15th, 2020 at 10:01 PM ^
Partridge was good but he wasn't Christ.
