Any Further Info on "Top 12 CFB Team to Get Whacked"? Could it be us?
Based on what was posted here previously, about a top college football team about to be exposed for all of its cheating and rule breaking, is there any more news to report?
I have a friend who is like the FSU version of me. He is nuts for FSU football and reads WarChant regularly. He said he was listening to a Tallahassee radio guy today (one he regularly listens to - so he must have some credibility or the kid wouldn't waste his time), and he came up with 5 names he was constantly hearing / suspected. Again, this is likely just some BS, but I figured it was worth sharing.
Four of the teams are OSU, LSU, Oregon, and Alabama. The fifth team was us.
Not to say this guy has any credibility or anything, but I do love to rumor monger.
I'm pretty sure that eliminates us if they're talking about any recent ranking system
Pow! Pow!
Pow! Right in the kisser!
Pow right in the Kisser! Pow right in the Kisser! Pow right in the Kisser! Pow right in the Kisser! Pow right in the Kisser!
i doubt it
I hate you guys.
nothing wrong with a little rumor mongering. i'm sure if it was us it would've been mentioned or part of the last investigation. and to the extent that it is true, when news breaks, i'm sure you'll hear about it in no time.
Rumor-mongering is what the internets are for. The radio is for homerism and really dumb opinions.
We let the NCAA investigate us. You really think that the NCAA missed something so big that a major news outlet is going to let the cat out of the bag?
The big rumor is Oregon using street agents in Texas to help recruiting.
So the entire college football is abuzz because of some twitter accounts and sports by brooks? I weep for the future.
It is sad that Sports by Brooks is now considered an actual source.
If ESPN is going to leak info to a competing website, why wouldn't they be running with that same story on their own website? It makes no sense at all that ESPN would just give info to someone else.
It's not news if it doesn't have a creditable source, it's just rumors.
Well then, David. That would make almost everything on ESPN a rumor, wouldn't it?
We're back in the Top 12 Baby!!!!
I knew Hoke could do it....just never expected results this quickly.
EDIT: I upvoted the OP as he clearly states he is rumor-mongering and tells us exactly what his source is. When spreading unfounded, baseless rumors on the internets this is exactly what you are expected to do IMO.
agreed, even though next season we will end up being ranked #1. currently we're not a top 12 team, so no need to fear. as for me, I'm betting it's osu, there's too many scum bags there for it not to be them.
The NCAA just went through our entire program with a fine tooth comb. Everything. If there was anything suspicious going on, they found it. There is NOTHING ELSE TO FIND.
Although your logic is calming, it doesn't mean we're off the hook. The NCAA went through our program, absolutely. Everything that was alleged was internal - practice logs, extra coaches, monitoring players in class, etc. All of these were issues of running the program against the rules.
These big issues that gets kids busted are often external - agents, boosters, money, etc. The NCAA could have scoured our program in 1992 and they probably wouldn't have found Ed Martin. Same with USC in 2004, I doubt the NCAA would have found anything about Reggie Bush and his mom's house.
Whatever happened that is so bad that a team is going to get in big time trouble, isn't internal. If a player is getting paid, his name isn't going to show up on the university pay roll, he's probably getting money from a big time booster, and that wouldn't show up on a scour of the AD. However, a media investigation might uncover it. \
I'm not saying I think it's us because I don't. If we've been cheating the last few years - we're the worst cheaters ever.
As you said, they went through everything internal. They found nothing at all implicating anyone in the program of anything. If anything were happening, it would have to be 100% external with nobody in the program knowing anything about it.
This rumor, and lets not jump to conclusions that it's true, says that the institution was involved. People in whatever AD it is know about it.
What do you mean, they found nothing at all implicating anyone? I'm pretty sure we're down a quality-control assistant and that Labadie is out of a job.
Anything recruiting wise. Yah.
It helps that they didn't investigate our recruiting tactics.
If the best we could do was mostly 3-star guys with MAC offers, RR was a far worse coach/recruiter than any of us thought. I love the kids we have, but if you're recruiting dirty you best be pulling in Alabama or USC calibre classes, otherwise the risk/reward is way out of whack.
Yeah, but it takes a lot more than "people in the AD knowing about it" for the NCAA to catch you. What I'm saying is, if we had boosters paying recruits to come here, and the coaches and AD knew all about it, it wouldn't come up during an NCAA investigation since I'm sure there would be no actual record of it happening.
Again, I don't think it's us, but I'm confident that whatever this wrongdoing ends up being, wouldn't have been found by an NCAA investigation unless they knew what they were looking for.
I don't think this is true. I'm pretty sure the NCAA does not audit every aspect of a program, just the areas where there is suspected wrongdoing. For example, I don't think they check the practice logs of a school that is suspected of recruiting violations.
"failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance". That means they dug through every coach's everything.
That is not necessarily true. There is no evidence that the NCAA ever expanded its scope beyond the immediate practice issue. If they had expanded it to areas of recruiting, they'd have had to have interviewed HS coaches and the like, and it would have made the papers.
We're probably not the guilty party here, simply because NCAA enforcement is very random. But the fact that we just got put on probation in no way clears us.
There is the possibility that the NCAA could have missed something major that was going on externally.
However, the FREEP definitely would have caught it.
ZING!
The NCAA has no legal authority to compel people to speak. Consequently, when they investigate a program, people involved usually just refuse to talk. That's what happened the first time they investigated our basketball program (in 1996-97). It was only years later, after the FBI went after Ed Martin and the players he laundered money to, that the NCAA finally got the testimony it was seeking. It's conceiveable that some legal issue could have come up that is offering the NCAA information it did not have before.
I dunno, all those five star kids who've been coming to Michigan from far away places lately have me nervous. Our team is just littered with top ten Rivals guys who committed out of left field with no connection to the program, so it's probably us.
I'm ranked 12 because all I do is win.
I can see why the rumors are there. Besides all the shady stuff that program has done for the last 10 years the door is open for it to be them after tat-5 got busted. The fact the IRS was involved in that MAY have lead to other finds but this far out I dont believe its them. I really believe its a program that hasnt been in any kind of trouble latley.
i doubt it is us if it was the NCAA probably would have said something already would be nice if it was osu or notre dame expose those them for the dirty bastards everybody knows they are
Try throwing a period somewhere in your post next time.
I am betting my house that its Oregon.
Where do you live?
I'll take this bet. How many bedrooms are we taking about here?
4 Bedrooms, 3 baths. Close to all ameneties, right on bus route. Many churches, grocery stores and big box stores within minutes. Close to all major roads. Quiet tree lined street, corner lot.
In Ohio these are considered luxury dwellings.
Why, is it one of those "lakefront" summer homes I see along the side of I-75 between Bowling Green and Findlay?
Holy crap. Every sports radio jocky just trolls for listeners. No one knows anything about this other than the NCAA. Everyone else is just fishing for page hits or listeners.
It's a possibility that Cowherd was trying to gain listeners, but he is usually respectable. He's not the shock-jock type.
I'll just leave this here.
http://michiganzone.blogspot.com/2006/03/espns-colin-cowherd-borrows-m-…
Not sure how that makes him a "shock jock" but for the hell of it I will defend Cowherd. I doubt he does all the gathering of data for his show. If that Wonderlic joke came across his eyes it most likely was dug up by a producer or some member of his show's team.
Cowherd is on the record as calling Michigan a "second-rate job." He's a shock jock and a ridiculous OSU homer.
