Probably inappropriate to say but this article makes me want to grab a bucket of popcorn.

over several weeks now, in explaining how this situation evolved, in the deeper administrative background, pointing quietly to who the real villains were in upper admin (Ferguson looms very large), and how cooler heads were forced out, revealing another layer of culpability/impunity. Too bad the OP does such a terrible job of introducing it or saying why we should read it.

"that university." She worked there and can't bring herself to actually name the place.

was a disaster as an AD. I can remember the press conference in '94 when they fired Perles as head coach - she wasn't even there, the President of MSU had to do it.
However, she never had a chance against the good old boy network there. Perles had stepped down as AD just to coach, and Perles and the old cronies running the show hated her, and made her life hell. Though there is some "sour grapes" in her - that culture shut her down fast, and what she is saying rings relatively true. She is going to be a nightmare for them in the upcoming weeks - the mistreated, Me-Too, female ex AD of MSU. Good luck with that, Sparty...

"He was a disaster at shortstop"
"However, the manager sawed his left arm off with a chainsaw."

McPherson had put public pressure on Perles more than once before. It was obviously his decision to fire him, not Baker's, even though that would normally be part of her job.
It was either grandstanding by the president or indicative of a culture where a woman wasn't going to have authority over the football program, no matter her job title. Or both.

Can we get some more MGoContent please? How about some recruiting roundups? Maybe a Necksharpie? Whats going on with the assistant coaches?

“There is no question in my mind — and this is not a horn-honk,” Baker said, “but had I stayed through my first contract, this man (Nassar) would have been discovered, uncovered, stopped and remediated in 1997, with the first complaint."
January 30th, 2018 at 10:08 AM ^
If the investigation shows that following proper procedures, mandated procedures by the way, would have stopped Nassar 20 years ago, then the next step is to look at why MSU wasn't doing so. Tieing that into the football and basketball programs is the worst case scenario for them. That's what ESPN is working on.

Had to weed through the six or seven stories on the MSU scandal to find it. Mlive/Freep/ Detnews are doing a pretty good job covering those, just stopped by for some Michigan football.

Family member involved? MSU Alum? Seriously, maybe take a step back and evaluate. I hated to hear about the Penn State stuff too but once you get all the rotten details from a news site, what more is there to know? It sucks, it happened, people suck, it happened.
How bout some Michigan football which is what I escape TO from this lousy news of the world.

Wow, this is very incriminating. She called them out hard and called them out specifically. If she is speaking truth, this sounds like the worst run university imaginable. Secrecy and deceipt to protect what again? Sports and reputation? So many girls and women were harmed during this time frame. May we all learn from this...

—it will be a long time before that happens—it will be obvious to the world that Joel Ferguson has been nothing less than a malignant tumor within the MSU body politic since he first sat his ass down in a trustee chair.
January 30th, 2018 at 3:45 PM ^
on Lansing and Michigan as well.
He's one of those guys who lobbied to move State Police HQ to downtown. Low and behold the State Police found a building being built on the Grand River they could lease........from Joel Ferguson's company.
Guess who was Governor then, yep John Engler.

The are holding on to power as a means of containing damage to the brand. In doing so they ensure that no real change takes place. In the last 24 hours MSU has appointed an insider to be interim president and opened an investigation into 25 year old accusations against Sue Carter (faculty who spoke out against MSU).
They still don't get it.
January 30th, 2018 at 11:30 AM ^
I get it, she has reason to be mad at Joel Ferguson and George Perles. Those guys hamstrung her career as MSU AD, and were the primary reason she lasted only a few years.
But this quote??? "Had I stayed through my first contract, (Nassar) would have been discoverd, uncovered, stopped and remidiated in 1997, with the first complaint."
It's ALWAYS easy to say "if only I had been there." Just express your disappointment in Ferguson and the current admins - talk about how Ferguson has always been mucking about in things and making it tough for MSU to do the right thing - and keep it at that.

“There is no question in my mind — and this is not a horn-honk,” Baker said, “but had I stayed through my first contract, this man (Nassar) would have been discovered, uncovered, stopped and remediated in 1997, with the first complaint.Sure seems like a horn honk. It's awfully easy to say after the fact that you - or any of us - would've done better. Hard to say if you were in charge if you really would've done it better

sore. The usual result of these cases is that everyone who could have played a role in stopping something, will come under scrutiny and then blame will be assessed and the greater the outrage, the louder the cry for ouster.
Izzo's program arose from the ashes of the post Fab Five booster payment scandal. It resulted in a complete change of direction for Michigan basketball and enabled Izzo to grow his program without serious national threat inside the state. He took complete advantage and the success of his program led to a similar rise in Sparty football fortunes once Lloyd Carr retired and Michigan botched the hiring of his replacement and Dantonio prospered in the coaching void.
Recognizing how scandal and indecision tore apart and disrupted Michigan's basketball and football success, MSU has never allowed the hint of similar problems to swallow up their programs until now. Maybe there has been a method behind their success in March Madness. Or maybe they realize the consequences of washing your dirty launder in public and then hanging it out to dry instead of just putting it in a rinse and wash spin cycle?

Not sure I'm buying what your selling, here... Yes, Izzo started when Steve Fisher annihilated UM bball, but Judd Heathcote's bball program wasn't exactly a bottom-feeding organization. His last season was 22-6, not even 'hard times'! There is no argument to be made for Izzo's program growing because UM's bball fortunes tanked.
MSU football, OTOH, grew up under the wandering eye of Bill Martin - who was watching (partaking in) sailing competitions as his football program burned. Yes, MSU football under Mick Damtony got good when Michigan wasn't paying enough attention to football. However, where I disagree with you here, is that I doubt it was any willfull action on MSU's part to take advantage while Michigan was down. I just think it worked out for Dimtania - right place, right time kinda thing.
I believe the dumbassery that runs that joint did nothing more than try to protect its star athletes because they like sports. I have a hard time believing they purposly took advantage of something so nebulous as downturns in sporting fortune. They just don't seem that smart, or perceptive, to me...

It's misleading to pull that record out of context. MSU had a senior-led team and overachieved in '95. They then missed the tourney the next two years.
A glance at Heathcoate's coaching record shows he really didn't do that much beyond the two years he had Magic Johnson.

with hundreds of complaints against Nassar to investigate. I mean he is getting 175 years in prison for this and MSU couldn't follow-up on complaints that started like 20 years ago? That is just absurd to think could happen anywhere in today's society. You put that together with the whole sexual assault issues out of the football & basketball programs, the conclusion is the Athletic Department is corrupt and needs to be gutted. I think the NCAA is going to come down hard on MSU when this is all said and done. Like a really bad outcome for MSU, far beyond losing TI and MD as coaches.
