Ohio State 30, Michigan 27 (2 OT) Comment Count

Short. [Patrick Barron/MGoBlog]

I'm staring at my laptop and the sea of exultant Ohio State fans on the field below dancing to "Sweet Caroline" and I feel sick.

Sick that Michigan threw away multiple chances to win this game in regulation. Sick that a dozen little plays one way or the other change the outcome. Sick at that spot. That fucking spot.

Michigan should be playing for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the playoff next weekend. Instead, they will sit at home as either Ohio State or Penn State represents the East. That spot, that fucking spot, will stick in the collective Wolverine memory for much, much longer.

The Wolverines controlled most of this game. Wilton Speight battled back from his still-undisclosed injury to throw for 219 yards and two scores, an effort that would take its place in the pantheon of heroic rivalry performances had the outcome gone the other way. Speight's two interceptions, however, were turned into two Ohio State touchdowns, and that allowed the Buckeyes to keep it close enough to force overtime on a 23-yard Tyler Durbin field goal with one second left in regulation.

The defense, which had played a spectacular game, looked worn out in the first overtime period, ceding a JT Barrett touchdown run on the second play. Speight responded with a fourth-down touchdown to Amara Darboh. Michigan's ensuing possession ended with a field goal after a questionable non-call on a third-down pass to Perry, leaving the door open for Ohio State to win it.

Seemingly given new life, the defense forced an all-or-nothing fourth-and-one. Barrett kept it. The officials gave him a generous spot, and even though it appeared on replay that Barrett's right arm—the one holding the football—never reached the line to gain, that spot, that fucking spot, stood upon review.

In a not-so-alternate universe in which the men in charge of the game are competent, there are Muppets and joy and appreciation of one of the most dramatic football games in recent memory or perhaps ever and scrambling to finalize plans for next weekend. Alas, that fucking spot. Alas.

Does not look bright. I am already dreading playing OSU next year. We are going to have a young team, and I'm feeling another blowout in the big house. Fuck

Sorry i just recently got into posting online about sports... Jesus. I am going to root for this team until the day I die, but to ignore that we will be young next year and that we just lost to a very fucking young OSU team is naive as hell. Our seniors deserved this game and they had it ripped away from them. We are losing so much talent, and Hoke did us no service to reload.

I don't understand this hate. I haven't been nearly as down as some of the other posters here... Like I replied before, I get over tough losses by looking ahead, and our lack of returning experience bodes well for OSU next year, and my blood boils at the thought of Jim going 0-3 against OSU to start his UM coaching career.

When you realize that the ball had to completely cross that yellow line (had to reach the white line, yellow line is just for TV) he still looks short. You're at a negative angle so there's that but the major point is he had to reach the WHITE line, yellow doesn't mean anything.

That f-ing non call on pass interference. That f-ing call against Michigan for pass interference that looked exactly the same, on a ball that was not catchable. Numerous non calls for holding on Ohio yet calls for a touch on the face mask nullifies a solid run for DeVeon Smith. Coach was tight to be upset- granted the team gave up a lot of bad plays to let Ohio stay close. But come on man- refs need to be calling the game correctly regardless! Had a room full of folks screaming for holds all day against the Buckeye line. Ridiculous. Enjoy this one Luckeyes- you sure wet gift wrapped this one.

HArbaugh lost his cool.  These are all facts and they are indisputable.  The one thing I just can't understand is even with us having 43 seniors (next year will be rough), them losing 18 starters to NFL, graduation etc, and them being all underclassmen, they still have better athletes and are a better team than we are.  And by that I mean, they made the plays when they needed to and they got out of trouble when they had to - see Samuel's crazy run and Barrett last few runs.

Everything was set u for us to win,  they missed two chip-shot field goals, we overcame three turnovers and two STUPID penalties  to still have the lead late in the game, yet we can't hold on.

Cursed?  I would say yes.  The death of Bo still hangs over this program.

Why do the cheaters (Bama, SEC and OSU) always seem to to come out on top.

OSU scored touchdowns off a pick-six and another interception-driven short field.  Their three long drives ended in two missed field goals and one short make.

Spreight made some good throws but too many mistakes, as others said, he did both win and lose the Game.

There were definitely calls I disagree with, but the problem with complaining about the refs when you lose is that there's no way for it to come across as anything but whining.

As with any double-OT game, there were many points where the game was won and lost - our second pick, the PI call, OSU missing a chip shot FG, Spreight missing a short throw to a wide-open Darboh on a 3rd and 4, and on and on and on.

The Game giveth, and the Game taketh away.  This time it took, and it hurts.

I'm OK with being pissssed about this game. That is a righteous anger.

But do not play the 'Michigan will not win The Game again' card. That is defeatism. We have the defensive brain trust to stop Meyer. We have the recruiting. It's one hell of a hole we dug for ourselves since the late Carr era, and we got out of it but for incompetent reffing.

im not sure if any of you took the time to look at the replay of the 4th down conversion from barrett. if not there is a nice still shot with the yellow line at 11warriors. feel free to check it out its in the comments section. i know it sucks to lose but blaimng the refs or the wind or the day of the week is well.... Lazy, weak, childish and arogant lol.both teams had to play with the same refs, it was obvious from the jump they were going to let them play. UM lost the game. Ohio State surely did not win that game. sometimes a losing culture does just that... they lose! sometimes accepting reality is the best way to move on.

If I were to ask you what "disciplined, sound, wise, offensive play-calling" looks like, would you tell me it looks like taking what the defense gives you? Would you tell me that running into a nine-man box is the opposite of "disciplined, sound, wise, offensive play-calling"? Alternatively, when the defense aligns itself with one deep safety, and obvious press man-coverage, that running the ball into the brick wall that is that defensive alignment would be wreckless, foolish, and completely arbitrary play calling? Just curious... And now I would ask politely that you judge Jim Harbaugh, as the offensive mind that he claims to be, with the same scrutiny that you judged Brady Hoke's self-proclaimed defensive mind... with THE SAME scrutiny. Brady Hoke's defenses were the strength of the team. Jim Harbaugh's offenses are detriment to the team.

Here is an interesting article from 2006 about one of the guys working the game. He was not allowed to work The Game back then but now he can?

http://www.athensnews.com/news/local/local-businessman-has-interesting-…

And here's an excerpt:

"'This year, I did my first full schedule in the Big 10,' he said. Schwarzel was an Ohio State fan growing up, and said he was excited to be on the field for the Ohio State/Texas game, which featured (at the time) the top-ranked team in the country against the second-ranked team.

His crew worked the Ohio State/Michigan game this fall, which also featured the two top-ranked teams at the time, but Schwarzel was not allowed to work the huge game because he is from Ohio."

I feel so bad for the seniors.  They played the game of their lives and I know they will play their hearts out in the Orange Bowl.  I wish there was a Michigan billionaire who would give Peppers the 15MIL he might make in the NFL to come back his senior year and exact revenge.   Nov. 25, 2017.  Your uppence will come.

All this discussion on whether he gets to the yellow line is wrong. They started on the 25 and he needs to get to the 15, the white line. And in spite of 88's holding, Wormley, while kneeling on the line, reaches out with his right arm and stops the ball short of the white line. That damn yellow line is a distraction.

Watching some of the old classics on BTN I noticed for years now it's a Buckeye alum announcing the game, either Herbstreit or previously Chris Speilman. Herbstreit is very clever in his subtle Buckeye bias. Is there any way of pressuring the broadcast to keeping OSU out of the booth? Next week KH will tell the world who should be in the tournament. He'll be all sincere and logical as he tells us how deserving the Buckeyes are.

I suppose I wouldn't feel the same had the Buckeyes lost, but that was an incredible f%&king  game and I believe it had to be probably the best game on TV yesterday, and the best OSU/UM game since 2006.

UM has nothing to be ashamed of. It was one for the record books and really could have went either way.

I tip my hat to the Wolverines.

Man is it me or do these suckeye trolls have nothing else better to do other than register on a Michigan blog and troll? Wow, I'm surprised they can even figure out the registration process.

I'm still pissed and will be pissed for a long time, but let's keep perspective. First we're not buckeye Orcs, thank G-d for that. But more important, this is Jim's SECOND year and he managed to take hoke's kids and turn them into a championship contender team. This is nothing short of A-maze-in! Yes this is painfully raw from the officiating to the mistakes, to the missed chances, etc. but it's time to rally around our kids and support them as we move forward. Go Blue!
