OT: Powerball rolled, up to 1.3 Billion

Submitted by MikeCohodes on
So none of us are filthy rich, yet, but no one else is either. Wednesday's drawing is estimated at $1.3 billion, though I'm sure that will climb even higher. I wonder how much you have to donate to get a building named after you on campus?

The lottery is nothing more than an inefficient and regressive tax designed to satisfy the greed of the state at the expense of its most impoverished peop---1.3 billion you say?  What are the odds again?

I NEVER play the lotto (I've never won on the 50ish scratch-offs I've been gifted in life so....lol) but I'm buying a ticket. $2? why not. At $1.3B it becomes fine, IMO. ODD FACT: My Uncle (Dad's Bro, not distant) was one of the first ever Michigan State Lottery winners. He won a few million back in the day and lives a solid life due to bring smart with it.

Read an article earlier on ABC that with that amount you could buy every single number combination possible.

What's the payout on 1.3 billion?  Probably doesn't leave a ton of profit though.  And if you end up splitting it with someone... ouch.

They were state level lotteries that had large jackpots. Some well monied people got together and had several lotto machines pumping out tickets 24/7 until they purchased every possible number combination. I think it was several million tickets, and the only risk was a split jackpot if a random Joe also hit.

If you look at the math for the current jackpot, if we could get like 1k MGoBloggers (this leaves enough extra to cover defectors) each buying something like 200,000 tickets buying up every number combination, we would be guaranteed to win. You do risk splitting if someone else randomly hits it. You'd also need to come up with the cash, which could be an issue. The payout per member though, would be something around 2 mil per.

Looks like another trip into upstate New York is in order to get some tickets. We went Friday night and when we crossed in and out ou the US, the guard at both borders just laughed when we told them we were going just to get powerball tickets.

I am starting to feel like the growing jackpot is just wrong to give to one person (if that happens). That is a ton of power in someone's hands. I know there are billionaires out there already, but all those people either earned it or enhereted with some knowledge and guidance it was coming to them. I mean, we could be creating the next supervillan here. Or, more likely the powerful amount will just crush some poor fool who can't handle it. at this point, even the states that let you claim anonymously couldn't keep the true identity hidden.

Look at all these silver spoon kids on reality tv on these shows with rich families.  Most wont lift a finger their entire life.  At least whomever wins will have worked at least for a portion of their life so its all relative.

And if it goes as usual it will get split by a few people anyhow.

And if it really goes to form some of the idiots who win it will squander 90% of it within 20 years.
