OT- Calvin Johnson considering retirement.
In a press conference today, Calvin Johnson announced that he is considering retirement, and should have a decision coming by next week.
He's been injured on and off the past couple seasons, but as the Lions best player, it would leave a huge hole.
Also, typical Lions...

Why leave? He didn't go to Ohio State!

I can't believe they wasted his entire career. Smh.

Barry Sanders entire career.

Billy Sims, Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson.....the waste continues.

is that he was the backup quarterback to Mike Winchell in the book "Friday Night Lights" and was mentioned maybe once. He ended up leading the Permian Panthers to the state title the year after the book was finished.

Charles Rogers...

No discussion involving Calvin Johnson should also include a Charles Rogers reference unless you're going for a Goofus/Gallant type reference.

Just sucks the competitive juices right out of the greatest players in the game. . .

This is a "Barry Sanders Retirement;" he is being misused on a mediocre team, has enough money to have a great life and doesn't want to spend the rest of that life with CTE or artificial knees/hips.
It also speaks volumes as to what he thinks about the direction of the franchise.

past few years. He's made his money and established a legacy. He's done everything save for win. I can't blame him if he hangs it up. He comes from a family of achievement.(doctors, lawyers) so I imagine that he'll do well for himself in retirement.

When was the last time an athlete released a statement to announce they were "considering" retirement?
January 6th, 2016 at 2:46 PM ^
Two days ago, by UFC fighter Carlos Condit.

Can't believe I missed that one.

And New York Rangers fourth-line defenseman Dan Boyle did it on November 19th. Are you even a sports fan?
January 6th, 2016 at 3:12 PM ^
Fourth-line defensemen don't exist, and he made the comment in passing during an interview.
January 6th, 2016 at 2:52 PM ^
to trade him to a winning team. If the Lions keep him, he'll retire. Otherwise, he can go somewhere to end up his career on a positive note instead of a dead-end.
January 6th, 2016 at 2:55 PM ^
due to his huge cap number. He would not need such a ploy if that was his desire.
January 6th, 2016 at 4:11 PM ^
The Lions wouldn't move him, either.

There's no way to get out of the dead money neither by injury, trade, nor retirement.
January 6th, 2016 at 3:09 PM ^
That's not true. If he retires before completing his contract, the Lions could seek to recoup his prorated signing bonus, and any amount they were able to recoup would come off the dead money hit.

I wish Charles Rogers had just decided to retire.

Do it. It'll be nice to be able to walk when you're older than 50.
January 6th, 2016 at 2:38 PM ^
Can this end up being a good thing for the Lions? Make the right GM hire and all that cap space could result in a better team without Calvin.

COULD end up being a good thing. They could draft a solid reciever and use all that cap space. But that would also require the Lions to start a series of smart football decisions. And history does not show a good chance of that happening.

Don't forget that there has been a change in ownership that is shaking things up. I have more confidence in Martha than I ever had in the previous Fords.

I just want to see him play one season with a good team. The idea of Calvin Johnson with the Patriots sounds tremendous

midseason to the Panthers. That would be so scary.

Johnson has been pretty banged up. He has had a great career and if he wants to walk away so be it. The NFL is a tough game.
