Sons of legends meet.
Tyrone Wheatley Jr. informed me that #Michigan's @JayHarbaugh visited him tonight. Visit schedule stands at Bama, UCLA, then Oregon for now

I really don't think so. He's a former star player at this place, and it is a great place to kickstart a college career.

Wheatley was on record about Michigan being his dream coaching job. I honestly believe he took a flyer in coming here to live that out... I'm not sure it would have happened if the Marrone fiasco hadn't occurred. I would not be shocked if this is just another temporary stop for him on his way to being, say, Durkin's OC or heading back to the Shield when Marrone is inevitably given a second chance by someone. I'm not saying he doesn't want his son to come here, I'm sure that's another dream of his. But I can't imagine that was the driving force in taking this job.

The list of kids who played for their dads when they had the opportunity is a long one.

As much as any freshman football player can "enjoy" college life, i think he still would given that he would live on campus and really only have involvement with Dad during football hours. Considering that wherever he goes the Coaches "own" him during football hours, it may actually be somewhat calming to know his Dad is one of the coaches who pretty much owns him and has a say in determining his future. i think the key is whether he believes Sir James wants him on the squad as much as Dad does...and sending Jay Harbaugh was brilliant both in terms of a possible position fit and to emphasize that MR. Harbaugh is VERY interested. But, we shall see....

I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to Michigan. My dad had a business just off campus. I stayed in the dorm and apartments and did not live at home in the summers. It was great being close to my parents. You could have short visits that tended to be better than living with them. For me it was great.

Plus a home cooked meal on the weekends is always nice.

I know people are half joking but son and father are going to see each other less over the next three weeks than at any other time. So I don't think pops is going to be in contact all that much. Jr. still lives in NY, and Sr. is busy as hell anyway.
And seeing as Jay was the one visiting, does this mean the staff sees Wheatley as a TE (at least for now)?

Coaches don't always stick to recruiting their position in college. Usually its more of a territory thing than just recruiting what position you coach.
January 15th, 2015 at 10:53 PM ^
Harbaugh's past staffs have recruited their position.
January 16th, 2015 at 10:41 AM ^
Mattison was in Texas recruiting LBs. Wheatley's standing in state would be wasted if he only recruited RBs.

People are underestimating Jay around here... He is a young guy, with both college and NFL coaching experience, who can relate to the recruits. Plus...he is a Harbaugh.
January 15th, 2015 at 11:17 PM ^
The two boys have a similar expectation to meet. Perfect move sending young Harbaugh.

Pops would have to spring for the shoes, though.
Seriously, the NCAA isn't prohibiting coaches from doing things for or with their own kids. They are parents first, representatives of the school second.

I keep thinking about Derrick Alexander's recruitment. He always planned on committing to Michigan, but he took the free trips to Miami and Cali because they were well...free. Maybe Ty Jr. doesn't feel the need to take an official since he's been here before and those are some nice warm getaways for mid-January.
January 16th, 2015 at 12:21 AM ^
I know we want him, so I hope he joins us. But Like I said, I won't be surprised if he doesn't.
January 16th, 2015 at 1:39 AM ^
I'm pretty sure he's not going to be living with his parents. Michigan has what 50,000 students? I'm sure he can have independence. I know there are people who want to get away but I would have given an appendage to play for my father.

Usually part of the point of going to college is getting away from your parents.

I agree, but I also wonder if there's something to be said for having your dad there to watch your games. If Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. ends up playing at Alabama and USC, there's a very good chance that his dad would never be able to watch him play in person, except maybe for a bowl game. As much as a lot of kids want to get away from their parents, those same kids would probably want their parents in the stands to watch them playing big-time college football, bowl games, etc.
January 16th, 2015 at 10:25 AM ^
Thing is, he won't really be playing for his dad. His dad won't be actively coaching him much. Either Jay Harbaugh or Durkin/Mattison will be the one he interacts with on a daily basis. Plus HARBAUGH as well.
January 16th, 2015 at 3:25 AM ^
He'll be playing for Jim FN Harbaugh, DJ Durkin, and Greg Mattison, (If he plays DE). If he plays TE, he'll be playing for Jim FN Harbaugh, Tim Drevno, and Jay Harbaugh. At one of the WORLD'S greatest academic institutions with one of the richest histories in his specialty - football. To be able to sit down with his parents every Sunday for dinner and pick up some tips from the people who love and support him the most is a bonus most kids don't have. Who wouldn't want to be associated with those coaches or that scenerio? Or the better question, is Who Would Have It Better Than Him?
January 16th, 2015 at 3:27 AM ^
Does that mean we're officially recruiting him as a TE? Taking Clark too? Seems like they're both a little too good to pass up for now.
