Funchess declares for NFL Draft
Not surprising.

Where do you think he will be drafted?

Doesn't surprise me. Wish he could have stayed and been a champion.

Get paid, son. Smart move.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:16 PM ^
There's a big difference between first round money and sixth round money, not to mention the contract guarantees. He's going for the short term quick money rather than assuring his future. I think if there was a coach in place that looked likely to use him, another year in school would be a huge benefit to Devin.
December 9th, 2014 at 5:38 PM ^
That's pretty debateable. He'l get one extra year of pay, sure, but likely at about 800k/year at the most, I'd bet. If you say he has a 5 year career, that's only 160k more per year. Staying an extra year and upping his draft stock could get him waaaay more than 160k more per year. It would also get him a degree, which will certainly help him from age 28-65.

and then come to the team? Would Funchess then be able to come back with Harbaugh????

were the rumors of him being a problem in the locker room ever debunked?

I'd like to see how you define someone going out there with lack of heart... Maybe a lack of concentration at time, but to question these kids' heart, effort, or whatever is mind-boggling. Frankly, I am embarrassed for you and this suggestion. I am pretty sure Funchess played essentially the whole season injured too boot.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:45 PM ^
Yep, because Saint Brady had to keep him in the game to pretend we were still fighting against ND.
December 9th, 2014 at 5:39 PM ^
Saint Brady? What the hell does that mean?
December 9th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
it was just a lack of hands, not really a lack of heart. I know, the Utah game, but seriously it was a 50/50 ball in what was pretty much a blowout where he was going to get absolutely laid out if he stretched. I thought that Funchess was pretty much good at what we thought he was good at and bad at what we already knew he was bad at. Funchess' worst move all year, and one of Hoke's as well, was giving him number 1. It created an unrealistic perception of what the guy was.

on who it's going to be then? Going to have to be Darboh unless one of the unproven guys (Harris, Ways, Jones, Canteen, Dukes) or Brian Cole can do it. That's not really a wealth of options there.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:57 PM ^
I honestly don't know. It's going to be another young, shaky year. I was hoping Chesson and Darboh would have emerged into a Manningham and Arrington-like combo by now, but that isn't the case.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:00 PM ^
I must have misinterpreted what you were saying. Not that Darboh won't be the #1, just that having him as the #1 is not ideal.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:04 PM ^
One of the biggest failures of 2014 is that the team didn't develop or progress anything that can be looked at as a positive, in the passing game, for 2015.
Morris didn't look good in his action. The recievers underachieved dramatically as a group. The TE's were often ignored - lost count of the times Butt was hand wavingly open deep.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:15 PM ^
Based on my recent reading of Mgoblog, it won't matter who our players are, because, you know....Harbaugh.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
All jersey number nonsense should be shelved until we get back to having some program stability.

all the "legend" stuff forever.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:36 PM ^
Bummer... Hope for the best for Funchess. It saddens me that I feel like he was underutilized this year and the App State game is only a blip of the potential that kid has. Good Luck Funch.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
notwithstanding what I said above, I think you are handing out passes a little too easily here. We did not go deep a lot but he really never gave us that much of a reason to. He really never got much separation and even when he did he dropped the ball at an alarming rate. I am not hating on him but he was not a "victim" this year, he was underwhelming. He did not live up to the hype.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:58 PM ^
I'm not going to go back and review every UFR but I am pretty sure one of the main complaints Brian had with nearly every game plan is the lack of bombs down the sideline to Funchess. The couple that stick out in my mind were Penn State (Successful) & OSU (Successful). He had a 5'7" Will Likely on him in Maryland and too my recollection we never tested him on a deep/jump ball once.
December 9th, 2014 at 4:00 PM ^
He never gave us a reason to? Seems like every time he actually went deep and Gardner had time good things happened. Sure, he dropped some easy balls, but he made some great catches as well.
Seems a lot like Braylon to me. Ideally he would have come back for next year with a coach who lit a fire under him and had a great year, but hopefully he'll go to the right team in the NFL.

His notes on draft boards basically state his strengths as -
- Burst speed
- Good size
- Flexible movement rare for player his size
- Moves well to the ball
- Long strides
Weaknesses -
- WAY (they used all caps not me) too many drops
- Needs to work on catch point
- Blocking technique poor
- Misses blocking assignments
From CBS Sports - and they have him as the #6 WR projected at #32 in the draft. So it sounds like they already know all about him. The technique issues with catching/blocking can improve if he is given the correct coaching. He's probably going to be a nice 2nd round pick for someone as his stock before the season was as a 1st round pick.

Thank you for your time at Michigan, Devin. Good luck!
December 9th, 2014 at 3:38 PM ^
Deservedly or not, I think there will be work ethic questions, and I'm sure he'll have to answer one or two about the "Wins and losses is just a statistic" statement, but I'd guess late 1st to 3rd round depending on his 40 times.

He could learn to be the next Jimmy Graham from the guy currently coaching him.

He never earned the #1 and shouldn't have been given it as a reward for his mediocre efforts. I'd guess that he will need to turn in a stellar combine effort AND provide good answers during the interviews on why he didn't put in greater efforts and block better, in order to be picked in the first round. Even then he still might not. I'd say 2nd or 3rd rounds are strong possibilities too. Still, I wish him well and thankful for his time here at Michigan.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:39 PM ^
but after watching the conference championships last weekend, there are a lot of good WRs in college. Also, I don't know if Shane is going to give Funchess that much upside, so going pro, if he can go in the top 4 rounds is a good bet for the kid.

December 9th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
Yes, he has combine potential, but unless he learns to block, he's not a tight end, and unless he learns to hold onto the ball, he's not a wide receiver.
December 9th, 2014 at 3:41 PM ^
He's be a perfect fit in the Patriots offense.
