Miles is unconventional and the lack of QB development is unsettling but he wins. Yeah, he's 61, but a 5 to 7 year run of a .500 winning pct. against OSU and MSU, while beating 'the teams we're supposed to beat' is part of my tempered expectations.
1) Harbaugh 2) Miles 3)Mullen
Schlissel and Hackett can perhaps reign him in a bit but let him be his quirky self.

He claps better than Hoke and he wears a headset . .. mind blown.

as long as you are winning. All bets are off if you start losing.

This kind of blew my mind. Les Miles. who is this guy?

Les's agent. He's a pro at this phase of the game.
November 30th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
I would imagine the LSU board is blowing up right now as the latest thread is titled "Michigan Insiders claim Miles is a done deal."
November 30th, 2014 at 1:44 PM ^
Good God, yes. We should hire him to manage our coaching search. He's a pro.
November 30th, 2014 at 1:54 PM ^
are you implying that Les would manipulate this situation to negotiate for more money?
November 30th, 2014 at 2:21 PM ^
nah, Les is a paragon of virtue and pure Michigan values and would never exploit his love for the university to get more money! That would be like Jim Harbaugh picking the NFL over us, just unpossible.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
Really, what is the source of this rumor? Am I missing a link or tweet or something?
When I google "LSU insiders," this MGoBlog page is the third link and there's nothing that comes up as LSU Insiders. There is (or was) a bayoubengalsinsider.com, but I can't get that to work.

He'll win if the B1G changes their recruting rules, the admissions office at Michigan shuts down for three years, and the weather here drastically improves.
Let's face it, Miles has built his resume at LSU by doing things in recruiting that would never fly in the B1G, let alone at Michigan.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:06 PM ^
Even if all your assumptions are true and that LSU is just on autopilot . . . just how did he get the LSU job in the first place? Why did a school in Louisiana decide that he was the man to replace Nick Saban?
Maybe I'm misremembering but I seem to recall him beating a defending national champion Oklahoma team in his first year as coach (at Oklahoma State) - and then doing it again the next year.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:24 PM ^
and going 12-12 in those seasons?
November 30th, 2014 at 2:24 PM ^
Then we probably should have hired him when he left for LSU in 2005, because then that would be relevant information.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
We should indeed have hired him the next time our job came open, in 2007. But doing it in 2014 is OK, assuming no Harbaugh.
Your argument basically boils down to saying, "If we ignore all the good things on his résumé, he has nothing but bad things on it."

which is the opposite of what you're saying. Just like you can't simply dismiss his record, you can't simply dismiss the context of his tenure at LSU (hired by the defending national champions, being able to put together a top 10 class without having to leave the state each year, having almost no restrictions on his recruiting) or his age from consideration. He is very succesful, he is also old and kinda sketchy.
Basically I think hiring him would be a sign of utter desperation. There is a reason that the only schools who hire guys in their 60's are Florida Atlantic and Ohio University.
November 30th, 2014 at 6:33 PM ^
At this point I'd say we're pretty damned desperate.

The person who hired him in most definitely not in that group.

Are the "power brokers" in charge right now?
That's not a rhetorical question. My sense is that they are not, but I don't know.
This particular division has riven the department since Bo retired. The "do it right" crowd won the first round when Carr got the job and Miles left town. It would shock me if they lost power now, when the least athletics-friendly president I can ever recall at the University has just taken over. But I'll bet the other side knows this might be their last chance for a long time to come.

The President of the University has expressed concern over Michigan's recruiting standards, as respects academics, now. I'm guessing the next coach will be someone that the department believes would do things the right way even in an inclement environment.

when you get your pick of athletes at Louisiana.
Plus, if Michigan wants an ethical coach, Les Miles wouldn't be in the list. He has done a lot of shady stuff off the field. See Oklahoma State for example.
If Michigan wants a coach who can develop QB, Les Miles would not be on the list. Lack of QB development at LSU is alarming. That's LSU fan's biggest complaint on Les Miles is lack of QB development that could've seprated them from the great and elite programs.

Nobody loves the sad state of Michigan football more than Les Miles. Every single time we are looking for a new coach, someone floats his name -- probably his agent -- and he gets a huge raise for staying at LSU even though he was probably going to stay anyway and wasn't even offered the Michigan job. Shit, that tweet alone is probably worth another million bucks a year. I would like to see Les as the coach of Michigan, however, either way he is the big winner.
