UM Varsity Coaches come out in support of Brandon
Well, there is this now out there, full text at Det news. It is signed by every varsity coach. Granted, you do assume that is expected since I would not want to be the coach left off that list if DB sticks around. On the other hand, it is something that I am sure the Regents will give a significant amount of weight.

I think it would be a much bigger deal if a varsity coach didn't sign it. Then that coach would be peppered with questions on why he/she doesn't support DB.

This was interesting. So the only thing on the agenda for athletics is a report on the Petition??
Bobby Dishell, president of Michigan's central student government, will present those results during his "Student Government Report" in Thursday's University of Michigan Regents public meeting at UM's Flint campus. Otherwise, there is nothing on the meeting agenda specific to athletics. That can change, of course, and there is a public comments period regarding non-agenda items at the conclusion of the meeting.
In the Regents meeting agenda for Thursday, the Student Government Report will be the last of the reports scheduled. Dishell's second item involves Michigan athletics. He will present the findings of the online Upetition that is open to anyone with a umich.edu login credential.

...how it works with the Regents but frequently issues related to litigation or sensitive personnel may be dealt with in closed session.

Under OMA a discussion of dismissal, suspension, etc. fits this only if the employee requests it to be closed. Of course, Brandon could do that. It also can be done to discuss settlement of "specific pending" litigation, not just any form of settlement.
I'm not suggesting these rules are necessarily followed, or that there is much more than a slap on the wrist, but that's technically what's allowed under OMA (along with a few other non-relevant exceptions).
October 16th, 2014 at 12:49 PM ^
For all in tents and purposives, the OMA doesn't apply to state universities in Michigan
October 16th, 2014 at 12:59 PM ^
What about...outside of tents?

There's also supposedly an ambiguous "Athletics Update" on the agenda as well. And an almost guarantee there will be athletics discussion during the public input section as well.
October 16th, 2014 at 11:37 AM ^
Of course every coach is going to sign this--especially Hoke.

I for one am shocked that they wouldn't all publically undermine their boss
October 16th, 2014 at 11:50 AM ^
On an unrelated note, it seems there has been an increase in uses of the spelling "publically" lately. I don't know why.

FWIW a quick google shows that publically is accepted as an alternate spelling many times, though publicly is the most common

You can't not sign that if you are a coach. That is pretty silly. To be fair, not all of their jobs are safe if DB is gone (though most should be).

Coach Beilein is untouchable, yes?
October 16th, 2014 at 12:48 PM ^
Beilein should be up there and that should make nine other coaches that predate Brandon who haven't been replaced.
October 16th, 2014 at 12:47 PM ^
Also:
100% Wizard
- John Beilein, mens basketball

That's a big piece, but if you're the FH coach, why would you hate David Brandon?
The man just found a way to get you arguably the best FH facility in the COUNTRY. Better than the ACC schools that dominate the sport.
If you were MLax, why would you hate Dave Brandon?
The man literally made you a D1 sport!
...Brandon has done a shit ton of good for a lot of "other" sports. Especially when it comes to budget and facilities.
Many of these sports have no reason to hate Brandon, when they had Martin they got nothing...with Brandon, everything has changed for the better in their world.
Then you look at football, obviously Hoke and Brandon are in the same sinking ship together, so Hoke is going to sign.
Beilein doesn't even have a reason not to sign, Brandon has given him more money to keep his assistants, Brandon got the Crisler Center and all the practice renovations done, Brandon helped give them the tools to create an elite program.
He may be a dick, but coaches don't care about that...they want someone who is going to do everything they can to help them win. PERIOD.
A coaches motivation should NEVER be confused with a fans or an alums. Both sides can be right, just depends on the point of view.
Let's be honest, the vast majority of Brandon's blunders have been football related or general athletics department related (not something that a coach would worry about)...and again do you really think Hoke is going to be upset with Brandon?

...people vote with their wallets.

Many of these sports have no reason to hate Brandon, when they had Martin they got nothing...with Brandon, everything has changed for the better in their world.I think it's a little harsh to suggest that Bill Martin did nothing for lower profile sports. The first facility upgrade he completed here after he took over was the baseball / softball complex. Bill just did what any AD would do when faced with a massive cash surplus and a campus full of aging facilities. He started with the highest priority ones first and worked his way down. By the time Brandon came along, all the low hanging fruit was already picked. What else you going to do with all that money? You can't build two football stadiums. Granted, the coaches of the low profile teams have every reason to like Brandon, but that doesn't make him the champion of non-revenue sports at Michigan.

A decade or more ago I was watching a presidential debate during the primaries.
The moderator asked, "What person had the greatest influence on your life?"
The first candidate replied "my dad." The second candidate replied "Jesus Christ." The rest of the candidates went down the line agreeing that Jesus Christ had the greatest influence on each of their lives. And the first candidate asked if he could change his answer to Jesus Christ after reflecting further.
I guess sometimes the situation dictates that you'd better take a certain position or risk your livelihood.

The rowing coach is probably thrilled with $5 water bottles helpting to support his $20 million indoor practice facility.

Dave Brandon gives us all these gilded things. We love him! Same with the Student Athletes.
It is the people being gouged, jerked around, and lied to in exchange for a (bland?, mediocre?, really sucky?) flagship product on the field (complete with all the generic bells and whistles) that want Brandon gone.

The AD just delivers the pizza. The coaches serve themselves.

position is if he resigns. He will not be terminated.
Resignation is not that far fetched especially if Schlissel places severe restrictions on how DB manages the AD department.
October 16th, 2014 at 11:57 AM ^
I agree that DB probably only goes if he resigns. He is not resigning, so I think he probably lasts one more year. As far as Hoke, he only goes if DB feels he needs to go to save his own job. I would put the odds of Hoke leaving at the end of the year at 50/50. DB probably gives the guy one more year if its up to him.

Is there a bomb shelter at Schembechler Hall he is secluded in? Not surprised that players support Hoke, and coaches support Brandon. They should.

that is less than ideal!
My AD (high school) said this morning that there is no way DB will be fired. "Its not the Michigan way", he said he would be forced out or resign.
I don't care how it happens, just as long as he is gone. Kind of a punk move if DB started this petition, "Hey guys, do you like your jobs, then sign this"...
October 16th, 2014 at 11:46 AM ^
I keep saying do not be shocked if the AD & HC next year look an awful lot like the AD & HC we have this year. I dont want this to happen but I wouldnt be surprised if it did happen.
October 16th, 2014 at 11:50 AM ^
...that's why I think people need to keep pushing with regard to firing Brandon. How can we get "Fire Dave Brandon" tee shirts readily available, for instance?
