OT: Twin Peaks 2016

Haven't seen it. Is it at Breaking Bad's level of television?
October 6th, 2014 at 7:28 PM ^
It was probably the best TV show of the early 90s, but it pales in comparison to The Wire and Breaking Bad (which isn't saying much since almost every TV show in history is dwarfed by these two).

Yeah...those three shows are kinda essential TV viewing.
Based on the last season of Boardwalk Empire, and the current season -- which are both amazing -- that show has elevated itself into my personal holy trinity.

To Game of Thrones.

Okay, well I'll give the first series a chance. If I can watch "Jim Profit", then I can watch "Twin Peaks."

I'm currently watching The Wire (episode 11 of season 2) and have watched both seasons of Twin Peaks (plus the movie). The Wire is a great show but so was Twin Peaks (season one, specifically). Both shows are good but very different kind of shows. The Wire is pound for pound the better show, but Twin Peaks shines in its own way. I'm excited to see it back on TV. I hope they keep the original cast.
If you're looking for great telivision, I think True Detective is quite possible the best TV series I have ever seen. It's only about 10 episodes but I couldn't recommend it more.

Which is what is so great (and sometimes so flawed) about it.
It's pretty easy to compare Breaking Bad to the Sopranos to Boardwark Empire to The Wire, etc as they are similar shows -- gritty, well-scripted dramas (with some humor), realistic violence, with compelling anti-heroes and villians.
Go search on YouTube for "twin peaks dwarf agent cooper" and watch those 7 minutes and 17 seconds and compare it to those shows. Sure, some of them had dream sequences (e.g., Sopranos) and some left-turns, but none of them were that completey unnerving and weird. You don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I don't know if the new episodes in 2016 will be good, but I am sure they will be interesting. I am in.

I loved the log lady, Nadine and the other oddball characters. There was so much truly weird stuff on that show, and it just kept coming. I am dubious they can recapture the spirit of it, but I will certainly check it out.

Not even close.

I was too young when this was on TV. Is it worth binge watching on netflix?

It's not Kate Upton's Biography.

Sherilyn Fenn. Third cousin. She is the niece of Suzi Quatro.

Lemme guess... old Alice Cooper and Bob Seger?

Why I have no idea as it was "Quattrocchi" is the old country. I've never actually met any of them. My Dad has though.

My seventh grade science teacher was Mr. Quattrocchi. Maybe he's a distant cousin?

Was an important milestone in my, uh, development.

And just SO bizarre RE: casting...Herve Villachaize (sp?), Kristy McNichol, Louise Fletcher, Burl Ives...I would have loved to hear the conversations with the agents that got them signed onfor that flick.

That is all.

Season 1 was great, start to finish. Season 2? Well...let's just say that Lynch was under some considerable pressure to advance the story, and although the Season 2 finale IS very good...I don't think Lynch originally intended to get there the way the show went. The ratings dropped, the show was cancelled, and (no spoilers here), but fans were kinda left...hanging.
BUT...
I see this new season as a nice way to make amends. And on Showtime, well...he can obviously get away with much more now. It should be very good. I can't see DL wanting to return to this world if he didn't have 100% faith that there are still great stories that remain to be told. I guess I'll have to sign up for one of those free 3-month trials in 2016!

That's my take on it too. Great Season One, rapidly declining Season Two, albeit with some visual highlights.
In some ways it's a precursor to Lost. It's surreal, the setting is isolated, the reality of the story is uncertain. Unlike Lost, it was honest enough to say, "It's f'ed up and there probably aren't any answers to what's going on here," almost right from the start (which may well have led to the ratings decline). Twin Peaks just explored what living without any answers was like. Until ABC started forcing the creative team to provide answers, and then the show *really* went downhill.
Still, looking forward to this. I'd rather see a continuation of My So-Called Life - hey now, don't laugh, Jared Leto won an Oscar and Claire Danes is Claire Danes so... yeah I got nothing but I'd still like to see it.
Or Nowhere Man, which no one but me and my roommate watched.

the difference between twin peaks and lost is that twin peaks can be enjoyed entirely on style. neither had any substance, but where that was exposed early-ish in twin peaks i think people clung to the idea that their could be something cool going on behind the 'what does it means' of lost.
twin peaks has about 10 amazing episodes, and then it turned into absolute garbage. its hard to get through the second half of the second season. still, until the murder mystery is revealed i dont think there is cooler run of television. and talk about ahead of its time.
VERY excited about this. and those interested in checking it out, its free on imdb.
October 6th, 2014 at 9:18 PM ^
Agreed. As you point out, Twin Peaks was almost all style. Kind of like poetry on television in the sense that the relevant question wasn't "What does it mean?" but "How does it mean?"
October 6th, 2014 at 10:44 PM ^
Yep. Season 2 is pretty bad, but Lynch wasn't actually involved in much of anything until the last couple of episodes when it was clear they weren't coming back and it was time to clean up the story. Really, the intention was not to make Laura's murder a central plot device for the entire show. It wasn't about solving the murder as much as using her as an entry point into this really weird place with kooky people that could evolve in their own way. The point was to do an almost soap opera-esque show set in this really odd place, with no logical ending point in sight. Despite the critical acclaim, it didn't really work out.
Bringing it back is terrific. Especially considering there's something written into the finale that makes coming back a couple decades later actually work.
Let's rock.

2 people already beat me to the kate upton joke. Got to be fast around here.
Guys if you are looking for a good show watch Suits. It's very underrated.
October 6th, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
Sutis was great the first year when they actually dealt with several legal issues per episode. Now it is all about their firm merging. Boring.
I watch it for "Donna". Smoking hot.

I'm tempted to watch the show after finding out Abigail Spencer is on that show.
October 6th, 2014 at 8:51 PM ^
she is not a regular, she is on and off some seasons, maybe 8 episodes in total over 3+ seasons.

...this year is probably as good a time as any to catch up.

finally finished that in 2009, oddly enough
October 6th, 2014 at 8:31 PM ^
I miss that show. Those episodes (much like Breaking Bad, years later) felt like mini-events when they originally aired.

Judging by the trajectory of this season, I feel a return of OT is warranted.
