Rich Rod was always damn good when the weather cooperated. This was a huge win against a great team...so hats off to him.
That said, I think he can be a good coach and this can be a great win and it not mean anything about Michigan. He was fine at Michigan until B1G play. We had a Heisman candidate through the non-conference season his final 2 years...then the weather changed, the defenses changed, and we weren't any good.
We also didn't have his DC, Casteel. And Rich Rod has said himself, he thinks he would've done better if he had his DC. He's got him in Arizona.
Put it this way...would it shock ANYONE if Denard and the boys put up 31 on this Oregon team?
would it shock anyone if GERG's defense held this Oregon team to 24?
hint: Hell no is the answer to question #1, Hell yes is the answer to question #2.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:00 AM ^
Um, DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL ... maybe if he was given the fucking DC he wanted and got in arizona, he could have won in michigan
maybe if everyone didn't abandon him when he came on as coach, and screamed and yelled about tradition, he would have done better.
You know, maybe just maybe we FUCKED UP?
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:06 AM ^
I never gave the reason why he didn't have is DC...I just said he didn't have him. We were cheap and we fumbled all the way around. But remember, Martin hired Rich Rod, not Brandon. Brandon has proven he'll pay up.
Also, I said he didn't win when the weather was shitty. He didn't. Look at his record when the weather turned, I think he may have won like 2 games vs. D1 teams while at Michigan after the weather got cold and the B1G started.
That's a fact.
It wouldn't shock anyone if we put up 31 on this Oregon team. Hell, I'd be surprised if we didn't.
But we'd still lose 31-56 and that would be that.
The story here isn't the 31 that Arizona scored, it's the 24 that they held one the most powerful offense in CFB over the past 5 years to. There is no way we hold them to that. Our defense was what, 114 in the nation?
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:18 AM ^
Here's another fact - you are completely biased and myopic in your vision of the program and RRod in general. LIfe is not black and white, the grey areas are VAST and RRod was traveling in a sea of grey while at Michigan.
He was handcuffed with everything he tried to do. The minute he was fired, Michigan opens up the wallet and pays Borges, AL FUCKING BORGES, the 3rd highest salary of any OC in the country and pays Mattison DOUBLE anything we were willing to give RRod for his DC.
The deck was stacked against him and if you can't see that, your not being honest with the real reasons you don't like RRod. But, by all means, keep telling us about how bad his record was and how that was all his fault while the rest of us watch a career .500 coach run our program into the ground.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:30 AM ^
I never said Michigan didn't open up the wallet...in fact, I said EXACTLY that, lol. Do you read?
I never said WHY Rich Rod didn't have Casteel, I just said that he didn't have him. And he's said publicly that he thinks things would've been different had he had him at Michigan.
And Michigan definitely didn't pay enough, but that was also Bill Martin's hire, not Dave Brandon. Brandon would've poined up the money, as he showed with Borges.
But you're arguing something that we're not even talking about.
I also never said the deck wasn't stacked against him, lol, it was. So what are you so upset about? We agree on both of those points. Neither had anything to do with my first post though.
And his record post-Oct. 1 and pre-Oct. 1 had nothing to do with the level of support he wasn't gettting. So even though we agree he didn't get support. Put that argument to the side because it's not an explanation for why he sucked after a particular date.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:44 AM ^
You're incredibly disingenious and talking out of both sides of your mouth. All you've said is that he was terrible and when people give you mitigating circumstances you claim you agree with them. You make no sense whatsoever.
I've already adressed the youth on the team and that should be all the explanation of why his teams struggled as the season wore on. They were young and inexperienced. 3 years and canning a coach is virtually unheard of.....and to your point about the weak Big East - his WVU team stomped Oklahoma in the bowl game.
Keep on telling yourself he's a bad coach.....or that he deserved to be fired.....I'm going to go see what it will take to get our current shit head coach canned after 4 years of stockpiling massive talent and doing nothing with it.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:05 AM ^
I never said he was terrible. Copy and paste where I said that...I know I didn't. Why? Because I don't think he's terrible. I think it's a solid coach and a very good offensive coach with certain things in place. None of that is terrible.
But go ahead, I'll wait. Because you are literally making stuff up and seeing if something will stick. You're like MGoBradyHoke. You can't just keep lying and hoping no one is going to call you out on your bullshit.
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:56 PM ^
Yost - These are direct quotes from you:
"So not only were we get ass raped on every offensive drive by the opposing team. We also couldn't score, the man who's an offensive guru and has a specialty, couldn't get it done."
"In those 3 games, we scored 16PPG! That's absurd. Meanwhile, we gave up 137! That's just as mind-numbing."
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:11 AM ^
...keep making stuff. I'd like to see you copy and paste all of these accusations.
You must be like 13 years old because you lie and then change the subject and lie about something else until you can find some daylight.
You should've just went to bed.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:58 AM ^
So your biggest complaint about RR is that he can't win when the weather is bad? Like during the Utah game? How did that go, sport?
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:05 AM ^
Rich Rod is one of the architects of the spread offense.
I think that weather wasnt as large a factor, as perhaps, the hostile working enviroment at Michigan during his tenure.....
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:09 AM ^
...and he had bad weather at WVU too...but he always was playing crappy Big East teams.
I'm not saying it was the only factor. There were a number of factors, but it certainly is weird that we were so good in September, even against good teams...then by mid-October, we were awful, especially on defense.
I don't see how that hostile working environment you speak of was any different on October and November 15 than it was on September 15. But maybe everyone just waited until midseason to be a dick to Rich Rod and pull any support he needed, I dunno, I wasn't there.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:09 AM ^
Give it up already. He was a success at WV where the weather is shit and he just stomped the #2 team in the country on the road.
The problem was, and continues to be, MICHIGAN. We fucked things up royally and ran this guy out of town. He was the future and we shit the bed.
He just rendered ALL of your arguments moot by embarrassing the #2 team in the country with a team full of 3*'s and a FR QB and FR RB.
ALL OTHER ARGUMENTS ARE INVALID.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:11 AM ^
He was the future?
How? If all arguments are invalid...state to me how Rich Rodriguez was the future at Michigan.
He wasn't.
They're not mutally exclusive.
Just like a good college coach doesn't make a good NFL coach or vice versa. It's not always cut and dry...sometimes it's about other circumstances.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:26 AM ^
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:41 AM ^
Because Rich Rod didn't win with Rich Rod's players...why does Hoke get knocked for winning with Rich Rod's players?
That argument only works when the previous coach has success. For example, if Beilein retired...and LaVall Jordan won a national championship next year. You could say "but he won with Beilein's players."
Why? Because Beilein won with those players and they proved they're damn good.
If I'm 0-12 and you come in the next year and go 12-0...you really think people should give me credit because you won with my players?
If I'm 12-0 and you come in the next year and go 12-0...you, you get the point.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:48 AM ^
Dude takes over a rotted out roster with no quarterbacks on a team built to play dinosaur ball and got shanked by alumni and former players for not being able to win 10 games immediately with the crap left over from the end of Lloyd. And then he gets fired before he gets a chance to coach his own seniors and an upper classman version of the electric quarterback he recruited/developed, all while having to hire DCs with a tighter budget than Brandon gets to use on hiring crisis PR now.
October 3rd, 2014 at 9:09 AM ^
What had he shown that said he deserved to coach his own seniors?
They won 4 conference games in his tenure in 3 years. Four.
They gave up 137 points in their last 3 games...as juniors.
Why should Rich Rod have gotten the opportunity to coach his seniors? Where was the promise for the future?
It's not like they won 4 conference games in 2 years, then won 4 the 3rd year and THEY scored 137 points in their last 3 games. I see that as progress...you doubled your win total of the past 2 years combined AND you put up UNGODLY numbers on Wisconsin, Ohio State and Mississippi St. - sign me up for another year if that's how we're going to finish year 3.
Rich Rod didn't do that, he was on the other end.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:27 AM ^
Those "other circumstances" are destroying the program as we speak from their ivory towers.....and until we all acknowledge the issues we have in the AD, and that we did this man very very wrong, we will continue the downward spiral.
The AD, the fans, everyone needs to be purged of the Michigan arrogance and it starts with the realization that he was a great coach that could have led us to the promise land if we would have supported him instead of shit on him.
It's obvious those who say he is a terrible coach have another axe to grind so I'm done ranting about this until guys like you and the other RRod haters come out with the real reasons why you hate him so much.

Brady Hoke won as many B1G games in his first AND second year as Rich Rod did in his career at Michigan.
In 2008 Rich Rod won 1 FBS game after Oct. 1
In 2009 Rich Rod won 0 FBS games after Oct. 1
In 2010 Rich Rod won 3 FBS games after Oct. 1 (one against IU who was dead last in the conference)
In 2011 Brady Hoke won 7 FBS games after Oct. 1
In 2012 Brady Hoke won 6 FBS games after Oct. 1 (one against Illinios who was dead last in the conference)
In 2013 Brady Hoke won 3 FBS games after Oct. 1
...so Brady Hoke is better, right?
No. FUCK no he isn't. But those are the facts.
Rich Rod can suck at Michigan AND Brady Hoke can suck at Michigan. One had support, the other didn't. One sucked after Oct. 1, the other didn't.
In the end, we didn't/don't want either. There will forever be reasons for both, and they don't have to be the same reasons, but the main reason will be NEITHER WON!
But look at those Rich Rod numbers, they're alarming, he was terrible after Oct. 1, there had to be a reason for that. Especially when you look at his record before Oct. 1.

Love to see Rich smile, goddamnit Dave Brandon, you put this man through hell, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you
October 3rd, 2014 at 1:58 AM ^
I said in another discussion after Minn, put Hoke and RR as HC on equal level teams and take away their coordinators. Who wins? Its not even close. RR at least can coach one side of the ball. Hoke can coach one position (DL).
Like Mr Yost said, I think there is some curse here - and his name is Dave Brandon.
Does anyone know if Brandon watched film with RR's coordinators? Or is that solely a Hoke thing?
Brandon is not only our Jerry Jones but our Matt Millen.
Congrats to RR.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:01 AM ^
They occurred when RR was coach here; he did not like them. If a genius had to waste time with an officious, useless administrator "participating," he would not like it. We haven't heard anything about Hoke complaining about the movie sessions with Dave.

Win on the road against the #2 team with a freshman QB?
What's that like?
Oh, I know . . . it's in the past.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:13 AM ^
It's not even a GOOD freshman QB. The Zona QB looked like a big ol' fat dude who poops himself in tight spaces and Rich still slapped together an offense around him.
God, forget Devin. Obviously he'd have a great offense built around Devin. Rich could get better stats with Russell Bellomy than Hoke's crew gets with the first string.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:00 AM ^
Amazing what can be accomplished when RRod isn't being undermined left and right by his own AD, former players of the University he is coaching and the local media.
What could have been if only we'd taken care to bring him up to what we wanted him to be....
What's the average star rating of his team? Remarkable....
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:02 AM ^
Imagine how his recruiting class is going to look next year.... beat oregon two years in a row now.
October 3rd, 2014 at 3:04 AM ^
Imagine how bad this looks for Michigan who ran RR out of town and replaced him with Hoke? The more RR succeeds, and he will, the more urgent it is to sweep the UM clean of Brandon, Carr, Hoke, and any leftovers of said administrations. After the way RR was treated, no top coach is going to come here unless big changes are made.

Great win for Rich, team looked tough on D, some outstanding RPS+ on O. It also shows how big a difference experience O linemen make.
Agree with Yost, there is no Wisconsin on the PAC12, save Stanford, so I will be interested to see the outcome of that matchup, the weather makes a big difference and if you look at Oregon's style in the big games they've been in vs. athletic D lines (Auburn NC Game, Rose vs. OSU) they aren't nearly as explosive.
