Josh Shaw story takes a really bad turn
Phew...
So first, Josh Shaw was a hero and a role model. Then, less than 48 hours later, there are rumors of conflicting reports. Now, those conflicting reports are coming to light:
Man. Talk about a change in direction.

the things that people will come up with to cover their azzes is astounding, but the belief that with all the social media and smart phones and whatever else that the truth won't come out is even more baffling.

Channeling your inner middle school girl, are you?

For emphazzis.

Quit being an azz Nassi.

what a strange fucking story.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:13 PM ^
he jumped off the balcony before it could get that far, so maybe just.... "story."
August 27th, 2014 at 7:45 PM ^
I can think of stranger stories...

From the article, it was a neighbor calling the cops when they heard a woman screaming for help. Witnesses describe him exiting the apartment via the balcony.
From the sounds of it, it seems like he was maybe roughing up his girlfriend and when the police showed up, he decided to jump off the balcony. Obviously, that's not confirmed, but from the "facts" reported, it seems like that's likely what happened.
August 27th, 2014 at 6:22 PM ^
Article also says that the patio door was pried open, so it could have been both - he could have gone in AND out through the balcony.

I guess I just would have gone with one that didn't cause a press release. Like "Coach I was at home watching film from last year and I noticed I was having a bad game. I got so mad I double-footed dropkicked a cement wall and sprained both my ankles"
August 27th, 2014 at 9:00 PM ^
August 27th, 2014 at 5:26 PM ^
Exactly. Had he said, "I was being dumb and jumped off a balcony" we wouldn't be talking about this right now. He would still get in trouble, but he wouldn't be a laughing stock.

Still cannot believe USC put out a fucking Press Release about this, which is what initially got the media's attention.
Asinine.
Your player did a good deed? Congrats. Let him come out and tell the world.
The school has nobody to blame but themselves.

This gives new meaning to the saying, "No good deed goes unpunished".
August 27th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
"if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't."
August 27th, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
The school has nobody to blame but themselves.
Why should the school blame themselves? Clearly the only person to blame is the one who made up the story. You certainly don't expect to be blatantly lied to. Let alone with a whopper of a hero story that is "backed" by his family members.

It's difficult to fake good deeds these days. We can thank T'eo for this.

We can thank police reports for this.

I would've went for "I drop kicked world hunger so hard it went back in time and killed Hitler," but to each their own.

Maybe his girlfriend could sense that his nephew was in danger, and she screamed, and he jumped out the window to go find his nephew, who was in fact struggling in a pool at a family party.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:28 PM ^
Must be the case. Palmdale, where his nephew was struggling, is probably 100 miles from downtown LA, where Orsini is (quite nice apartments, I might add), so he drove a long way with two sprained ankles.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:45 PM ^
... the jump from her window didn't hurt his ankles. Upon arriving to the pool, he needed to get a birds eye view of the situation to assess how critical it was. Once there, he realized he only had seconds to spare, jumped off the balcony, sprained his ankles, saved his cousin's life. It's Occam's razor, man. Not rocket science.

after the fake girlfriend circus at ND, that programs would do some additional diligence before running with something like this. I surely hope that when our time comes -- and I am sure it will -- cooler and smarter heads prevail so we don't as a school/program lend credence to this type of thing.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:33 PM ^
...as to why the woman was screaming? Hopefully that news gets out because with all of the recent scandal in football your mind jumps to sexual assault...and that's unfair. But it could've been a burglary, it could've been a typical couples fight and she got loud. That doesn't explain why he'd jump out the window...but when they say she was screaming, you instantly go "oh no, not another case."
August 27th, 2014 at 11:35 PM ^
I know this is inappropriate but just had this image of Mrs. Stephen R Kass screaming and SRK leaping from the balcony.
Hey it's opening week. The mind is in full gear.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
There's just too much interest in this story for the truth not to come out in the next 48 hours. Especially in LA. The media and news cycle is just too vicious. Someone will be making a public statement soon enough.
August 28th, 2014 at 9:00 AM ^
I meant 4 hours.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:39 PM ^
At least he wasn't given the game ball for fake saving his nephew.
We will never know if he could have gotten some Heisman simpathy votes with that story.

especially when they hit teen years. Somehow the truth becomes whatever way they need to twist reality necessary to support their point of view or justify what they want to do.

Too often, in this day and age, kids still aren't being taught how to swim, especially inner-city kids or kids of lower economic status. It can't be stressed enough how important it is just to have a child learn basic swimming so that when they are in a pool, at the local watering hole, or where ever, drowning doesn't occur. It's so sad to hear so often of kids drowning because they don't know how to swim.
Josh Shaw story probably has little to do with what I just said, but I do think it's a point that is good to make nonetheless.
August 27th, 2014 at 5:49 PM ^
A lot of people also don't realize how important flossing is. I've read reports in which dentists say it's more important than brushing. That may sound crazy to some people, but the point is that the $1.30 you spend on dental floss is one of the best investments you can make. Your teeth are your best friends.

Not only that, but a lot of US-Americans don't have maps, like such as the Iraq!

I agree with you. This goes double if you live in Southern California where there are pools everywhere and a goddamned ocean.
We put both of our boys in swim lessons at 6 months, and our oldest could jump in the deep end and swim across the pool before he turned 4. So many of their friends will have pools or boats or will go to the beach that it seemed like a no-brainer to us.

First, it's clear that Josh Shaw jumped from a balcony. Second, it's clear that he suffered serious injuries to his ankles.
The rest of this is all really very minor details, raised by people that hate USC because it's the most awesome school in the universe.
Sincerely,
The USC Fanbase

I wish I could be as stoked about Michigan as USC fans are about the Trojans, but I sadly remain un-stoked.
