Maybe we keep JJ?
December 18th, 2023 at 8:53 PM ^
I'm hearing Underwood is going to IMG.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:02 PM ^
Yeah I’m not holding my breath.
I like Sam but some of his takes…seem like spin.
for example he’s saying the Moore recruiting shifted negative because of the uncertainty with JJ but he just commited to Oregon where Dillon Gabriel landed. So that doesn’t track.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
Nah, as the dust continues to settle on the NIL/portal front Michigan seems to be in a pretty position. Let the bagmen guys go somewhere else.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:29 PM ^
Moore never wanted to go to Michigan. We finished like 4th or 5th in that recruitment. Its not that surprising he didn't want to come here.
But you are right, we aren't getting Underwood. Harbaugh is a good but not elite recruiter.
December 19th, 2023 at 8:52 AM ^
Harbaugh started out with some pretty highly ranked classes. My guess is that bag money and now NIL is the issue, not him.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:46 PM ^
Meanwhile, we are in the playoffs and have beaten our arch rivals 3 years on a row, all in the midst of constant complaining by some on this message board about the lack of 5 star commitments.
Let the coaches recruit and develop players who fit the academic, athletic, and social culture of the University and it's athletic department.
December 19th, 2023 at 9:46 AM ^
The team culture and coaching are outstanding and is a big boost in performance. We play a lot of players and our depth protects us from injury and wears down the opposition. We did not build the incredible depth until covid with additional eligibility and a strategic assist from the portal. So far this appears to be a sustainable model going forward.
I also think that Harbaugh has followed the Beilein model of recruiting high character kids from strong families. It takes a while to build this in football. Harbaugh is a players' coach who NEVER throws players or coaches under the bus! It's always on him! How can the players not love him for that! And he lives by his own genuineness of competition and getting better everyday.
We might have to pony up for a 1-2 year portal QB, if required, to fill in a gap. Think Jake Rudock. ND seems to be able to do this as of late. One has to be the right fit to work with THE TEAM.
Look at OSU, starting QB and WR leaving your team through the portal! These are me-players and quazi pro teams with a toxic fan base. I understand when players who don't play leave, but......... And surprisingly, Day has not figured out to apply our depth and locker room model advantage and incorporate the use of a mobile QB. His stubbornness will be his downfall.
Not surprised about Dante Moore. He took the money before! Sounds like all the hollow quotes we have heard from recruits about our academics in the past.
December 18th, 2023 at 11:37 PM ^
Um, we have JJ. And he’s staying.
December 19th, 2023 at 12:05 AM ^
I mean, we have Jadyn Davis coming in, Solid commit for 2025 plus a pretty good room with Orgi, Denegal and Warren. What has Moore done to lead you to think he’s better than what we have in the pipeline?
December 19th, 2023 at 2:13 AM ^
Also helps that if you want 5 star QBs and WRs you have to be committed to throwing the ball and not just doing it when you you get bored with running. Frankly, would also help when it’s time to step up to elite national competition.
Every time we have played a bowl or playoff game the opponents have noted how predictable we are. There is very little mis-direction or tendency breaking in this offense. Even the passing scheme that we run has little variety in routes/levels and when we do break our something new we either go back to our comfort zone, even when the new thing was working, or continue trying the same thing over and over again even when it’s not working.
December 19th, 2023 at 9:46 AM ^
at what point does winning pay off for us on the recruiting trail?!
If I didn't know better, I'd think a lot of fans actually care more about "recruiting championships" than championships on the field.
I don't follow recruiting much anymore, and don't miss it a bit.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
Not surprised. Here's hoping we do indeed get one more year of JJ.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
So either JJ is coming back or we have to hope some QB decides to transfer in the spring
December 18th, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
They're related in my mind. No QB is going to commit here without clarity on the JJ situation. And JJ won't decide til our season is over, which makes it hard for us to recruit any QBs during this portal period.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:05 PM ^
dante moore just committed to oregon even though dillon gabriel also just committed there for his final year. so he's clearly fine not starting next year.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:17 PM ^
That or he's willing to compete with Gabriel for the starting job.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:31 PM ^
Pretty sure the job is Gabriel’s to lose. He was one of the top dogs this season.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
Gabriel's good but he's not great. If Moore is the stud they say he is, he'll be the starter.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:28 PM ^
He got yanked at UCLA, not quite the 2 x 4 you're referring to.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:37 PM ^
So he toyed with Michigan again. Said it then...hard pass.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:24 PM ^
Which is exactly why it’s dumb to have this early transfer period. Wait until all the bowls are finished.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:28 PM ^
Most schools start their semester right after the start of the year. Can't push the portal window back or guys won't be eligible for spring.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
Early signing day is the issue then - how do you know your # of spots?
Bowl season that almost no good players play in if not in playoffs? Meaningless for most programs.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:12 PM ^
So NO QB would come to a playoff team and sit for a year MAYBE?
Got it - thats not the attitude the top programs have. Oregon sure was able to secure two QBs without worrying about that.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
Isn't Dillon Gabriel at Oregon? I assume he liked the '25-'26 depth chart because he's probably not starting over Gabriel.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
Yup. I don’t understand how they land Gabriel AND Moore in the transfer portal.
December 19th, 2023 at 6:06 AM ^
And lots of it.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
$$$ and Moore told he is starter next year.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
If that sold him, he's dumb and naive. With the portal, NIL and their scheme, Oregon's a pretty sexy destination for QBs, and would be able to handpick whomever they want. And they'll have no problem bringing in another transfer if they believe that someone is better.
December 19th, 2023 at 8:48 AM ^
They have an entire year to teach Moore how to play the game - how to read defenses, how to call plays, how to get the OL into the correct protections, how to find the blitzer... None of which Chip Kelly even tried to do when he threw Moore to the wolves in game 1. Assuming Moore can learn, Oregon is set at QB for the next three years and can build an offense around a stud. Don't think for a minute that Danny Lanning hasn't figured that out.
The difference between Oregon and Michigan is that Oregon doesn't have another stud QB arriving from HS already setup in the pipeline. Jayden Davis is a competition factor that Oregon doesn't have to explain.
December 18th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
And they have a legacy commit (Akili Smith Jr) committed for 2025. Given Gabriel's injury history, he has a chance to play, but it's still a risky move on his part.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
It’s ok Dante will transfer here for his grad transfer year
December 18th, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
It’s okay; we’ve got Denegal starting for us next year.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:33 PM ^
Who? Don’t we have Mike Jones?
December 18th, 2023 at 8:13 PM ^
Nike owns that team enough said!
December 18th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
Is it wrong to not have a final opinion until I know the NIL piece?
December 18th, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
But he supposedly cared about being developed and not getting the biggest bag. Lol
December 18th, 2023 at 7:55 PM ^
Well, Bo Nix’s ascent to a Heisman contender is worth something.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:49 PM ^
Sure, but it's not like Nix showed up at Oregon as some schlub
December 19th, 2023 at 8:16 AM ^
Perhaps not a schlub but he certainly wasn't anything special. Below 60% completion rate, under 7 YPA, at least mostly took of the ball with a 39/16 TD/INT ratio. But you can't say that was the natural next step in his maturation. Oregon made him go nuclear.
December 19th, 2023 at 6:07 AM ^
He has also played more games at QB than anyone in college football history,
December 18th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
Bo Nix turned himself from a laughingstock to a second round pick in two years at Oregon. Michigan isn’t the only place a QB can develop. This is the kind of thing that would be true if he chose Miami.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
I see third round projection for Nix. Fact is Moore will play in a wide open offense that doesn’t resemble anything the NFL runs. And at a place that notoriously pays a ton. It’s clear that Moore was looking for the bag despite what he was saying.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:11 PM ^
Oregon could have offered both. In any event, I don’t understand those who suggest that wanting to get paid is a character flaw. oregon has a lot to offer plus money. Michigan didn’t pursue him very hard because of the guys they have and are pursuing. Everybody happy. It is fine.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:22 PM ^
Also Oregon throws the ball a lot more than Michigan. Most of us here, if we were 5* QBs, and took our Michigan fandom out of the picture, wouldn’t commit to Michigan.
Despite Harbaugh being the “QB whisperer”, Michigan hasn’t had a qb drafted since Rudock. Plus, kids do not know much about Andrew Luck at Stanford. What about Michigan would draw you in if you were an elite talent and other schools were offering big time cash?
December 18th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
This is the one thing about Harbaugh that I still can't figure out. Why on EARTH does he insist on running such a...boring...minimalistic offense? It's 2023!
I'm not saying it can't win games...obviously it can!
But for someone who supposedly is amazing at offense, none of his offenses here have even marginally impressed me in the slightest lol. He's been winning for the last 3 seasons now, but good lord the man knows how to bore you to death on offense. I just don't understand it.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:33 PM ^
I dont get it either..while it has been successful in the regular season we struggled in the playoffs..we were forced to open it up against TCU because we just kept running into the line and then were getting killed and all the sudden the offense was what we would love to see and looked amazing
Need to have some balance and if want to compete for NC have to have top flight skill position players (QB, WR, RB, CB) and the offensive side does not want to play in a 70% run based offense.
JJ is an outlier so we will see what happens
December 18th, 2023 at 9:33 PM ^
I see the passing game opening up more in each of the last three years. It could be that Michigan finally has that legendary arm quarterback and with more experience under his belt they throw more?
