PSU Close to Hiring Ex-Indiana HC Tom Allen
PSU’s coordinator hires: can they overcome Frames?
Personally, I think that Allen’s defense with the typical talent PSU recruits will give UM more trouble than the risk-addicted Diaz defenses did.

as a Michigan fan in Indiana, I strongly approve of this idea

As long as they don't hire a competent OL coach we good
December 18th, 2023 at 5:55 AM ^
As long as they don't hire a replacement head coach, we good.
December 17th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
They definitely will be better. B1G is going to be brutal next year, especially with Oregon and uWash reloading at qb. Doubt usc is that good, but can be dangerous. And osu will still be a top 10 team at their floor, and it's on the road. Need some of the core guys to come back.
December 17th, 2023 at 8:34 PM ^
On the plus side we don't play PSU next year.
December 17th, 2023 at 8:59 PM ^
Or do we? # b1gcg 2024!
December 17th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
I say the same thing in every thread where this dude is mentioned: Fuck Tom Allen!
December 17th, 2023 at 5:12 PM ^
Agreed Bayou Blue LSU, I think he coached dirty tactics and it always seemed like when we played his Indiana teams, there was a lot of underhanded shit going on.
December 17th, 2023 at 6:25 PM ^
Tom is truly a POS and a dirty coach. I do honestly think though this will be the best staff PSU has had in quite a while.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
Agreed Allen >> Diaz as a DC. He'll make adjustments during the game.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Yeah, Allen as a DC is really good. He makes sense in that role at a top-flight school. That said, if Allen is only going to be around for a year or two before trying to be an HC again this might not be optimal for PSU longer-term but in terms of next year they could do a lot worse than Allen.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Imo long or short term evaluation, player buy in and developing them are key. It would be better if he adapted to what they already do well and bring his defense to that. I believe that is why Jesse Minter did so well. Yes his defense in large part is the same but it does have differences from what Mike MacDonald installed and ran. That made the transition seamless is the same defense overall but adapting what he wanted to do and the players he had. Tom Allen would be wise to talk to Diaz.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:35 PM ^
I agree. Allen is aggressive as a DC but it's a different style than Diaz and so if he's only there for a year or two that would be disruptive in terms of continuity. But Allen's a good coach so I'm sure he'll have a plan.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:20 PM ^
If you want to be a top flight school, I'm not sure how long-term you can really think when hiring coordinators. The most likely scenarios are you hire someone worth their salt who gets some HC looks in a couple seasons or someone mediocre (at best) who gets fired in a couple seasons. That just comes with the territory of being a top flight program.
Plus, I'm not sure Frames can afford to look too far ahead at this point anyway. Not that he is on the hot seat, but I'm not sure how many more seasons the crew in Happy Valley will be content with being second or third fiddle in the B1G, especially now with a 5-star QB on the roster.
December 17th, 2023 at 5:16 PM ^
Allar might have been a 5 star in rating out of HS but he ain't that in college, he looks pedestrian to me.
December 17th, 2023 at 8:23 PM ^
Whether or not he's pedestrian, he was a 5-star, which comes with some big expectations. If those expectations are not met, it looks bad for everyone.
December 17th, 2023 at 9:07 PM ^
I agree, but just saying that if Allen comes in for a year, changes the system somewhat substantially, and then bolts for a G5 job because he wants to be back at the top that's maybe an unnecessary cost for a program when you could, for example, promote from within and have more continuity. Look at Sherrone Moore moving up from position coach to co-OC to sole OC over a couple of seasons vs. going out and trying to import a new OC once Weiss was let go.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
Diaz has way better hair. Allen and Frames would tie on looking confused. Frames wins by a doodle.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
Frames doodle you say....
December 17th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^
Idk, I thought Diaz called a great game this year. Imo I was surprised he didn’t match heavy with heavy in the 2nd half, but I think he still was concerned with a pop pass behind the secondary. Still though, they are a dang good defense. Franklin, had a good game plan, and only a couple obvious coaching mistakes but when it’s that close one or two is the difference.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
Agreed. I'm not seeing how it will make much of a difference for UM.
PSU had a top tier defense this year. They were physical and flying around. Just like Ohio State. Nothing about any of Indiana's defenses makes me believe they'll somehow be more devastating. They'll be good like they were before. Good vs Good, someone will be better. Someone is us.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:38 PM ^
We are the storm.
December 17th, 2023 at 10:02 PM ^
We are inevitable.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:54 PM ^
They had one of the best defenses in the country, and Diaz got rewarded with a great HC job. In fact, for all of our sarcasm about Frames, who annoys the crap out of me, personally, PSU was unlucky to be as good as they were in a year when we were better. I always think it takes two years at least to put in a new scheme and acquire players for it, so I tend to welcome change at other schools while we seem to be maintaining continuity.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:06 PM ^
That would be a great hire. Indiana's problem was never defensive coaching, it was talent and offense (at least the years Penix wasn't around to bail them out). Add Penn State level talent and that's a great combination.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Great move if they do it, though learning a new system always has more than a few hiccups unless you have a Hutchinson and Objabo as your DEs. However, if Allen went and had a lot of success in his first year at PSU he'd likely get another shot as HC and more money somewhere or be poached by a better P5 team as DC.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
Would probably be hard to poach him as a DC more likely he gets hired as an HC if that defense is nasty next year.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
The B1G is such an incestuous conference.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
While I don't disagree, I think that speculation about the love lives of MSU and OSU fans is not really germane to this particular MGoPost
December 17th, 2023 at 5:59 PM ^
Eeeewww. That reminded me of this ad. Eeeewww again. Without sports, this wouldn't be disgusting.

My cousin and wife went to MSU.
She’s a really good person.

What OSU fans do with their coolers is their own business
December 17th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
FRAMES gets his new mini-me. What could go wrong?
December 17th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
They have a 5 star QB in Allar, a 5 star RB in Singleton, and rumour is 5 star WR Julian Flemming is heading there. With the turnover at UM and OSU if Frames doesn't win next year he never will.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
Allar may be a 5 star talent in terms of NFL measurables but he isn’t a 5 star college producer in the way that others are. Without the mobility angle its tough to be a true difference maker at the college level.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
Except none of those guys plays like a 5*. Maybe Allar can get there (I have my doubts) but the other two seem like they are what they are by this time in their careers.
December 18th, 2023 at 2:31 AM ^
Frames at Penn St is super Brady Hoke with a fantastic defense.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:17 PM ^
Allar is one of those Shane Morris 5*
December 17th, 2023 at 6:15 PM ^
Allar is a good QB but he’s not a game changer
re-evaluation he look more like a solid 4*
December 18th, 2023 at 2:32 AM ^
Id take my chances with Orji over him.

PSU D was not the problem this year. It is the Head Coach.
December 17th, 2023 at 3:54 PM ^
They are off the schedule for a few years so good...beat Ohio.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:24 PM ^
Exactly, we don't play them for a couple years. Not sure when they are back on the schedule. Allen is a dbag....
December 17th, 2023 at 3:55 PM ^
Xs and Os, Allen is fine. I philosophically would have preferred PSU promoted Anthony Poindexter internally --- you're replacing 2 coordinators, having 1 outside and 1 internal hire seems a fair mix. The new OC is external, from Kansas. Internal hires are always good for morale amongst those who already are internal.
One potential watch-out: Allen does strike ms as a potential personality mis-fit. Allen is ..... uh, he's always struck me as crazy and a bit insane. Franklin's honestly pretty chill (probably too chill).
December 17th, 2023 at 4:05 PM ^
Any word on how hot Allen's wife is? That could be the real concerning mis-fit.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:16 PM ^
You're laying some bait there! That's alright, I get it.
All I'll say is: yes, many guys, myself included, DO respect fellow men more when they exude confidence and charm. And so do many women.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:26 PM ^
I'm actually not. Just musing about Franklin's previous comments.
Allen doesn't seem insane or anything. Just seems like a rah rah weirdo. It is going to be amusing watching him and Frames share a sideline.
December 17th, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
It's alright - I enjoy bait from time to time.
Anyway, if we're going to "muse (philosophically) about Franklin's previous comments" --- it's my opinion that it's not just men --- many if not most WOMEN ALSO respect a man more when they see he has a good looking wife or girlfriend. And become more attracted to him herself. Do you agree?
I'll lay some bait myself :-)
December 17th, 2023 at 5:52 PM ^
Man if I had any idea what women found attractive my dating life would have been much more productive. Now that I've been married for almost 20 years I'm really not one who should be opining on it.
