OT - Lions

Submitted by Goldenrod Mandude on October 15th, 2023 at 7:07 PM

The emotion most associated with watching the Lions has changed from pain  to enjoyment. Weird. Very weird.  I’m 54 and just saw a stat that this is the first time since 1970 they’ve gained 350 yards in their first five games.

Thoughts?

It's not what Vegas thinks about the Lions.  It's what Vegas thinks about the betting public.  Vegas is trying to fix the line so that they get half the bettors taking the points and half giving the points so that their votes cancel each other out and they still collect 10% on about half the action.

it just shows that there are a lot of people not on the Lions bandwagon yet.

Edit: wagers, not votes

Forward down the field, a Lion team that will not yield!

It has been a long time since I've watched a Lion team that has it together in all three phases of the game.  And they're doing it consistently and with injuries and other things that have kept key players out through the first 5 games.  The last 16 games the Lions are 13-3.  Hot damn!

OT of the OT. But who cares....

I'm watching youtube multiview with Giants vs Bills and Baseball playoff TX vs Houston. What a great feature eh?

I love Fall.

I’m going to re-post. They’re winning because I stopped watching. I actually watched a bit of the Seahawks game and they, of course, lost. Didn’t watch a second of any other game.

What the Lions  brain trust finally figured out is that you need roster depth to win in the NFL. Despite all the injuries, they're still rolling.

If this team gets home field in the playoffs, watch out!

The Lions are looking really good right now. This was Goff's most impressive game of the season for me. Running game was struggling with injuries and a strong defensive front and Goff strategically picked the Bucs apart and was a big difference in the game.

I also think the Lions could look into adding another HB. Montgomery has been banged up with a few different injuries and this Gibbs injury seems to be lingering. Zonovan Knight was suppose to be insurance but hes out for the year. Cam Akers was moved for a conditional 7th rounder and HB value is at an all time low. I think it might be worth it to see what a 6th/7th round pick could bring for some more depth and playmaking out of the backfield.

I do agree another legitimate pass rusher would really do wonders for this defense and is a bigger need than more back depth. Its also much more expensive. If we can trade what is probably one of the last 10 picks in next years draft for someone who can come in and help the offense immediately I'd be pretty down.

Im with you.  I am 56, been a fan since the mid 70's.  This has been surreal. It used to be euphoric on Saturdays with a Michigan stomping and then followed up with a "oh well, they are the Lions..."

Now, this year?  I am just savoring every moment.

They have a good offense, above average OL, a decent QB. If their young secondary improves through the season they will be tough team to beat.

The Lions look fucking great. Lots of young talent and great coaching to match. Dan Campbell is the man. Despite my earlier snark, I do hope the Lions do break through and win the big one this year. I have no hate for the Lions--I've been low key rooting for them for years because Detroit gets all the shit and does not deserve that. And the long-suffering yet still loyal, true Hawaiian blue fans of that team absolutely deserve to see them win a Super Bowl. From this Giant fan...GO LIONS!

They're good, guys. Legitimately good.  Its gotta feel really fun.

Dolphins fan here and it's been miserable for a while too, but I know it doesn't compare, historically.

Pay Goff now. He has been playing better than any Lions QB since Bobby Lane, wanted to be here, and personifies the Detroit against Everyone theme very well.

What a treat to watch him and JJ play every weekend. Pinch me I'm dreaming.

The best/weirdest part is when they were up by 14, I had faith that the defense wouldn't go SOL. It was kinda eery.

/Baker Mayfield caveats apply, but still

I do wonder how much of his issues stem from having a different OC every year for the last several years. I believe he's gone through eight different OCs in his pro career.

I don't think he's an All-Pro caliber player in the league regardless, but I don't care if you're Justin Fields or Pat Mahomes. Cycling through that many OCs in that short of time is not good for anyone's career progression.

But yeah in any case, I'm fairly surprised at how good, or perhaps its more accurate to say, not bad that he's looked. He is far from Tampa's biggest problem. Outside of Tristan Wirfs, he's got a garbage OL and he's spending much of the game trying to make plays on the run because he can't get adequate protection.

Lions doing this without Branch, CGJ, Houston, Paschel…is impressive. Still not much of a pass rush which I think will catch up to them. But this is still a young team.

Jamo and Gibbs have the potential to be game changers. Just got to get them going.

"Weird. Very weird." Yes. It's a strange feeling. Not hoping for the Lions to win, or thinking they can, or even knowing they can; but expecting it. Especially in mid-October. It is weird.

I think once a lions fan always a lion fan despite decades of disappointment.

I was lucky enough to have 3 direct lion experiences that were memorable.

in the 1980s I met a lion from the 1950s - a tight end type guy Cloy Box. Read his history he was definitely a guy that did more with less in football and in Business

In the 1970s Another Lion Great Charlie Sanders. Someone asked him if his coach was really as tough as his reputation. His memorable comment - I may be a football player but I am not that dumb (as to answer THAT question)

I saw Bart Starr, packer great play one of his last games in old tiger stadium on a cold, snowy December day. There were numerous fires in the bleacher section for people to warm themselves. Not sure who won that game (1969 I think?)

all memorable and many other great memories of Lions past despite their lack of playoff success

There's certainly an argument to be made that they're the best team in football right now. I always thought that as long as the Fords were in control of the team, the Lions were destined to go nowhere. They have been the one constant through all the years of agony and disappointment.

Still plenty of season to go, but I may yet be proved wrong.

It’s been suuuuper cool seeing the Lions fanbase at our away games.  That stadium yesterday was filled with Honolulu Blue, and they stayed after the final whistle.

Something is happening.  I can’t explain it.

Uncharted (in a pleasant way) territory and saying the Lions are fun to watch without Barry Sanders is a new experience. Need to stay healthy. Not yet the depth needed for the seasonal success come year's end.
