OT - Lions

Submitted by Goldenrod Mandude on October 15th, 2023 at 7:07 PM

The emotion most associated with watching the Lions has changed from pain  to enjoyment. Weird. Very weird.  I’m 54 and just saw a stat that this is the first time since 1970 they’ve gained 350 yards in their first five games.

Thoughts?

I agree, but you left the most important hire off your post: Chris Spielman as VP of Personnel, he Identified MC/DC and Brad Holmes and brought in John Dorsey as the head of the talent evaluation department.

I dare say without Sheila Ford Hamp we don't get any of those guys. She's the force behind turning this into a competent organization.

It's tempting to say that Sheila Hamp, perhaps due to the Firestone contribution to her ancestry, has affected the Ford curse that began in the early '60s.

EDIT: As Team 101 noted, I forgot something obvious (that her brother WCF Jr. has the same parents).

The stat I can't get over is that the Lions have 7 playoff wins in their entire history. My Lions misery began with the Eddie Murray missed FG against SF in '83

"Gary (Danielson) had five interceptions, and Billy Sims fumbled on the goal line. We had so many opportunities to put them away. It then came down to me trying to make a field goal from about the 44-yard line with seconds left."                                                                                                                                                        Eddie Murray, 2021

Funny story about that game.  I was a little 8 year old boy watching that game with my late Father and my uncle at my uncle's house.  I was devestated when Eddie Murray missed that field goal and I was crying.  My dad and uncle start laughing about it and I start yelling at them while crying and they said, "This is typical just get used to it."

I learned 40 years ago at a very early age that being a Lions fan was all about being devestated.  My dad has been gone for 36 years (died when I was 11), but he was prophetic that evening.  I still talk about that game with my uncle to this day and we laugh about it.  One other thing about that game is I remember Head Coach Monte Clark praying on the sideline just before Eddie Murray attempted that field goal.

I hope this is the year they can finally break through, if not it cannot be any worse than that first devestating loss I experienced, however there have been probably 168 others like it since that first one.

If you know all the words to the Lions fight song like I do then you're also a devout fan, and you'll appreciate what I'm saying here.

Campbell has been a godsend, he has overcome our soft franchise culture and fans should cherish him.

I will be 60 next month.  I literally have been a Lions fan for 50 years.

There is something different about this team. The ball control/clock management in the 4th Quarter was not typical of a stereotypical Lions team that would have blown the game.

I'm drinking the kool-aid but maybe with a little Tito's because I'm still kinda tentative to believe all in.

Go Lions!

Oh, and Go Blue and fuck ohio

I thought the same thing when, I think it was Reynolds, was running down the sideline at the end of the game and stayed in bounds to keep the clock running.  Also when, this might have been Reynolds too, made that block to spring Amon-Ra for the touchdown.

They are playing way better than any Lions team I've ever followed.

Living in Indy I don't get to see them much unless a prime time game. I do have the red zone channel and they showed so much Eagles/Jets which was on locally that I forgot I was watching the red zone.

NFL doesn't want Detroit success and will deal with ir begrudgingly.

That was an amazing play. First two downs resigned me to a FG, and then Goff hits St. Brown and he’s got some space so there’s a flicker of hope, but there are a bunch of defenders guarding the line to gain…

And then a silver blur knifes in from off-screen right and absolutely destroys the last defender and St. Brown has the corner, the sideline, and the winning touchdown.

When I saw that block I yelped. Louder than the subsequent td.

What a fun team.

Still have 5 (3 home, 2 away) games left against our awful division too. Barring a lot of significant injuries, the floor of this team looks like a home playoff game.

Sounds like we born same year.  Lions fans are die-hards for sure.  There's been some exciting stretches of years.  But I dunno if they were ever a real threat to take it all til now.  I remember the Silver Rush days and Billy Simms.  Before that not too much.  Other than the best CFB analyst to ever grace the earth - Danielson.  My 70 somethin year old uncle still talks about the glory days and never misses a game.

I'm a left coaster and about a dozen peeps, friends and their kids are all comin out to the Charger game.  Which also happened the last time the Lions played the Chargers.  Somehow they think they're all crashing at my place for a few days.  Haven't let em know yet that I never built that extra wing on my mansion with 10 new bedrooms.

1952-57were the last Lions to be great.  I was just out of high school and in college.  I remember it vividly.  Bobby Lane, Doak Walker, Leon Ford, Les Bingamen, Tobin Rote and a marvelous supporting cast.  Epic battles with Otto Graham’s Browns.  The following 65 years have been hard to live through.

Joe Schmidt, Jack Christiansen, Yale Lary, Jim David, Hopalong Cassidy and Bobby Layne (don't forget the y). Stayed very good until the AFL was formed and lost their draft picks to AFL teams except for Nick Eddy, who they signed for half of Dearborn and was promptly injured, never playing a down in the regular season.

Tampa Bay is a good squad too; to beat them in their place, that's a statement. The SOL's would have folded in the second half, not this team. Did you hear our fans in the final few minutes? 'Let's go Lions' ringing loud and clear!
