Sorry, I don’t post a lot to the board so I’m not sure if this counts as OT or not seeing how it’s not football season.
UM stuff is never OT. Even if rabbit season.
Duck season.
It's terrible news but not OT. First I heard and thanks for sharing.
Not OT - and damn, that sucks for the young man. Made some solid contributions last year, and may have been lined up for more.
Best of luck to him in his recovery and finding what's next.
Best of luck to the young man. Hate seeing something like this happen. Now hoping for a full recovery
Thanks for the post. That's a bummer, but I'm thankful for his contributions and I'm glad he had earned a scholarship. Also, in looking him up just now, I realized his dad is Sam Gash, which somehow I had not realized.
From the Mo Hurst School of Having a Completely Different Body Type Than M'Dad
There was also this Dylan Raiola kid. Cannot seem to post picture. Having trouble with antiquated site. Meltdown to commence. I am on fire right now. I just got over it. I liked his dad on the Lions anyway.
TWJ as well.
How is it off topic? Football player in football team. He also had one of the most clutch catches of the year.
Good luck Isaiah
Gash's clutch catch is at 11:48.
We will always have that 4th down catch against Illinois with the season on the line.
Wish him the best
I forgot about that. His one shining moment. I wish him the very best of luck going forward, and gratitude for his contributions to Michigan football.
I was so proud of that kid that day.
He was next man up and saved our asses against Illinois.
Logged in just to see who already beat me to this. Word for word.
Replace cartilage? What's that mean? You can trim/shave .... But are they actually injecting anything? Haven't heard of that
some try it in younger patients via grafts or cultured cells. still pushing microfracture too. no real great options over long haul though
There are protocols now to actually replace cartilage. Been done in cervical spine surgeries and now in knees. Colorado Av captain has/had it done.
The procedure involves harvesting your own cartilage cells, culturing them and then replanting them in a second procedure. The method that's been around longest involves taking a periosteal flap (the periosteum is the "skin" that covers bone) sewing that flap over the defect and then injecting the cultured cells beneath that flap. A more recent method involves the cells being placed on a special membrane and fitting it to the defect.
The other methods that have been around longer are drilling, abrasion or micro fracture the goal of which is to get stimulate a fibrocartilage healing of the defect.
I had chondroplasty after college when I dislocated my kneecap for the 2nd time. It was terrible. My knee hasn't been the same. Have zero confidence in it and it aches pretty regularly.
Worst part was that I was told it was a meniscus tear so I was going to be back to normal in a couple of months. Woke up in a huge knee brace and was told it would just take more PT. Then my PT was actually honest and told me it was a serious problem. 23 year old at the time, former college athlete, and I ended up with the knee of a 60 year old.
Hey I resent that remark! I'm 60+ and still skiing! 🎿🎿 Don't Pickleball me into a corner sonny!
Found my knee donor!
I was a guinea pig back in 2003. I had a piece of bone the size of a quatrter break off the end of my left femur. They harvested bone marrow from my tibia and injected it in the broken part of the bone and sealed it up with a “skin” graft. They also harvested some of my healthy cartilage and shipped it back east where they grew more in a lab. 6 months later, after the bone hardened and new cartilage was grown, they cut me back open and placed the cartilage over the damaged area. Another 6 months on crutches and both the bone and cartilage were set. 20 years later and it is still holding. No metal pins or plates, just my own bone and cartilage.
That's really neat
Steve?
Is this you? The 6 Million Dollar UMaz?
Hahaha more like the 6 hundred dollar man.
That sound arduous!
But it also sounds like it worked out for you better than my microfracture surgery from 16 years ago. My knee is structurally good (acl replacement) but my level of athleticism was never the same. Not that I had been Chris Webber or Jamal Mashburn. But those guys also saw a big decline and started at a considerably higher level than I did.
Shame about Gash. Thank goodness the coaches gave him that opportunity to redeem himself against Illinois. He can retire on a high note.
Not going to lie, it was a brutal year. Literally on crutches the whole time. I actually had to go back for a scope a few months later because the cartilage had grown too much and they had to shave some off.
Wish you woulda saved some of the extra for me!
Wow! I'm not usually squeamish but that got to me.
Did it improve your 40 time?
Unfortunately it did not improve my 40 time.
Not OT and not good. But he’ll always be a Michigan Man and he’ll always have the bonds he forged in the weight room.
Wasnt he in the 2 deep a few years ago at end of season? The the following year didn't hear of him much.
Not really. He got time against Illinois when Corum and The Don were out. Stokes may have been halfway in the doghouse still.
We were down a ton of players against Illinois
He got some big snaps this last season. Speedy recovery my friend!
Isaiah May your life be full of achievement from this point forward. Thankful you selected our favorite team.
Bummer. Hate to see that. While ending his football career I hope it recovers well enough that it doesn't affect his personal life.
that's sad. i know how much sports meant to me and how much it means to our kids. the thought of not being able to keep playing because of what is basically a pretty serious injury has got to be devastating. Lord willing, this is the type of thing that vectors him into some exceptional life circumstances and achievements, a healthy 'making up for the lost opportunity' approach to young mr. gash.
He will have plenty of support along the way.

I thought the same thing, a la Grant Newsome.
Very disappointing news. I wish the young man an abundance of happiness and success in life.
damn. sad news to hear. I thought the kid played well when he had the chance to go in.
Hopefully, he'll find success and happiness off the field. It would be great for him to still be part of the team in some capacity until he is able to graduate with his recruiting class.
Here's his career gamelog; how many of us have said something to the effect of "I'd give a [knee] to have run for over 100 yards (and 2 TDs) for the University of Michigan? I'm sorry he actually lived it out, but gosh what a man!
The only 3 catches of his career came against Illinois. Great time to come up big.
Godspeed Isaiah, and thank you from a grateful Blue nation.
Darn.
And darn good little career at Michigan:
https://mgoblue.com/sports/football/roster/isaiah-gash/24345
From the above link:
" • Carried the ball three times for six yards and caught three passes for 24 yards including a key fourth- down conversion on the game-winning drive against Illinois (Nov. 19)"
Thank you Isaiah. And much success in wherever life takes you!
That's a shame. Prayers up for him and best of luck on what's next. Thanks for the efforts against Illinois and elsewhere, Isaiah
Low key MVP of last season. I have an attitude of gratitude toward this young man.
This is a good lesson to kids thinking the grass is always greener on the other side of the portal. Gash stayed here, will get top notch medical care and a degree from a great university that will set him up for life. Hope he sticks around the team this season but not sure what the rules on that are.
Michigan will honor the academic portion of his scholarship so he can complete his degree. However, he will not count against the 85 scholarship limit for the team.
The team may ask that he also "work" with the team as an assistant of some type.
