Mat Ishbia purchasing the Phoenix Suns
hopefully less resources for MSU
December 20th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
Immediately gives 10% of the team to Mel Tucker per his contract.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
but he'll deny it.....
December 20th, 2022 at 2:21 PM ^
Of which Tucker immediately gives KW3 his 10%, per his contract.
December 20th, 2022 at 3:07 PM ^
I'm shocked he still has enough money left after #TuckComin to get all 'Shiba's money.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
Subtext: MSU is on their own for the next $95 million head football coach amirite?
December 20th, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^
"why is this memorial to the #Tunnel8 outside the Suns' arena?"
December 20th, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^
He should hire Izzo away from MSU.

December 20th, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
And then lose pitifully for four years before Der Fizzle cashes out and goes ice fishing.
December 20th, 2022 at 9:57 PM ^
That would be great. It would be hilarious to see the reactions of NBA players when he tries to yell at them.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
Less resources? The guy played on the basketball team, am I missing something?
December 20th, 2022 at 2:15 PM ^
He is the guy who donated the most money to make Mel Tucker the most overpriced coach in history.
December 20th, 2022 at 4:45 PM ^
Michigan State basketball is required by statute to have 2-3 white guys with minimal minutes on the bench from places like Grand Ledge or Okemos or Eaton Rapids. Ishbia was one of those guys. Like Steve Izzo only Ishbia didn't have to stand on his tip toes to pee at the kid's urinal.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
I'll give Ishbia credit. He is doing the sports things that I would be doing if I had his kind of money.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:35 PM ^
I can’t pinpoint it, but there’s something I really hate about that guy.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:44 PM ^
Me too. I think it might have something to do with the fact that he is buying the Phoenix Suns today and I am going to a Coinstar after work in order to buy two hot and readys on the way home.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:15 PM ^
The hot and ready deep dish is seriously underrated.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:20 PM ^
I completely agree. Frankly I think that Little Ceasars is underrated in general. Of course it cannot compete with places like Jets or Buddy's but you also don't have to take out a second mortgage to get it either.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
Whoa, look at Mr. Moneybags over here with a mortgage!
December 20th, 2022 at 2:37 PM ^
Yes, I have a mortgage. Yes, I am ashamed.
December 20th, 2022 at 6:31 PM ^
Little ceasers pizza is like cardboard... not much better than speedways
December 20th, 2022 at 7:18 PM ^
I just disagree. I eat a lot of pizza and as far as chains go it is middle of the pack, leaning higher. Their supreme is flat out sensational.
December 21st, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
The only reason that Little Sleazar's (sic*) is underrated is that you almost can't rate it any lower as a product
* and probably sick, too
December 20th, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
I know what you meant, but my brain still wants to believe you're getting pizza from a Coinstar.
December 20th, 2022 at 5:20 PM ^
There is a gigantic pizza making machine outside near me known as the 'Za Bot' so its not too far of from a coinstar.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
He gives me this vibe:
December 20th, 2022 at 6:05 PM ^
Nah, Ari Gold had an undergrad degree from Michigan.
December 20th, 2022 at 4:08 PM ^
That he was in the lucky sperm club and we were not.
December 20th, 2022 at 10:11 PM ^
I worked at UWM. It’s not a vibe. That dude is a POS
December 21st, 2022 at 3:26 PM ^
Going out on a limb here, maybe it's his alma mater that gets you irrationally heated 😂
December 20th, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
This title should be OT. MSU, whether they have resources or not, will still suck - therefore this purchase by a donor is pretty irrelevant.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:38 PM ^
Welp, there goes Phil Martelli.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:45 PM ^
Matt Ishbia. Born on third base. Thinks he hit a triple.
December 20th, 2022 at 3:46 PM ^
Honestly, I think his dad built a decent family business but then Matt came in and catapulted it. It'd be interested to compare revenues from where his dad got it to where Matt took it. No easy feat.
December 20th, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
How is he financing this? Isn't pretty much all his wealth tied up in his company?
December 20th, 2022 at 1:58 PM ^
He is probably just going to have to sell Tesla.
Oh wait. I am getting mixed up here.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:17 PM ^
Hmm….I thought most of his money was tied up in the purchase of a bunch of houses.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
He also has 200M of mansions under construction. Doesn't seem like the mortgage business should generate this kind of wealth but what do I know.
December 20th, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
Mortgage business and amortized interest payments is fucking robbery.
December 20th, 2022 at 3:57 PM ^
Ace, is that you? Would love to hear your thoughts on whether landlords should be able to charge rent.
Snark aside, people have been able to borrow money at <4% for the past decade plus. That's a great deal. "Amortized interest payments" are robbery doesn't really make sense. Yeah, maybe at 20% but def not at 3.5%.
December 20th, 2022 at 4:52 PM ^
[Christ, Jesus has entered the chat]
December 20th, 2022 at 4:05 PM ^
And UWMC's market cap is only $6B with a pretty small float. Strange.
December 20th, 2022 at 6:36 PM ^
Maybe he’s like the federal reserve and just prints Monopoly money
December 20th, 2022 at 1:58 PM ^
In researching how Ishbia made his money (United Wholesale Mortgage), I saw this on Wikipedia:
United Wholesale Mortgage announced that they would no longer work with any broker or bank that also worked with United Wholesale Mortgage’s leading competitors Rocket Mortgage and Fairway Independent Mortgage Group.
Does this mean that the Michigan State University Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage find themselves in a Jekyll/Hyde battle for their own soul-type situation???
December 20th, 2022 at 2:08 PM ^
He made his money by being born into it. Now I will say he’s done a great job of taking it to a very high level. He seems to have more intelligence than all of east landfill.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:37 PM ^
Man, let me show you something. This was his house. It's one of the nicer ones in the neighborhood, and in Birmingham Schools so now I bet it Zillows for over $1 million, but in the '80s this was upper middle class.
He got a good head start, but compared to most billionaires this is like 10th percentile. His dad's mortgage company was just a medium sized firm. Mat took over one piece of it and built that wing into UWM. His dad...I shouldn't say all I think about him but the idea that Jeff Ishbia is responsible for his son's fortune is patently ridiculous. If he had an insurance agency instead of a mortgage company, Mat would have the biggest insurance company in Michigan.
Mat's main thing is he's insanely energetic, insanely driven, and just...insane. When we picked teams on the playground he was always captain of his team and the next two best athletes in the class were the captains of the other team, and then Mat's team usually won. Mat picked the game. He once got a bunch of kids bowing down to him and kissing his feet to be picked on his team. A friend once joked that they bet his body naturally produces cocaine. I've never encountered anyone else like him.
I think his dad has a lot to do with who Mat became, but not in a "here's lots of money son" way but in ways that made it impossible for Mat to ever relax a muscle in his body.
December 20th, 2022 at 2:54 PM ^
Appreciate the inside info. I had a feeling Mat's rise was mostly due to his own ambition.
December 20th, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
"Zillows for over a million" made me, a guy living in Southern California, spit out my coffee.
This is what $999,999 buys you in Torrance, CA, a nice middle class suburb of LA:
December 20th, 2022 at 4:36 PM ^
You'd think with all the people leaving, homes would be cheaper.

Torrance, home of Monkish Brewing. Nice!

Love me some Monkish, the best Hazy on this side of the country
