Metrics. Madden kids. Trends. Couple of unsuccessful 4th down conversion attempts. Unranked team hangs around too long. Ranked team gets beat.
Some externalities (wind conditions not optimal) no award winning FG kicker, etc., but I bet the Beavers wish they would’ve “pulled a Harbaugh” and taken the points.
Bonus content: former UM player Giles Jackson takes end around down to the 2 yard line to get UW in chip shot range for winning UW FG.

Oregon State:
- Went for it from 4th and 2 on the 7 yard line on their second drive of the game
- Went for it from 4th and 3 on the 15 yard line on their fourth drive of the game
while it's true that the distance is different, it is worth pointing out Harbaugh went for it on 4th and 3 on the MSU 38 in the second quarter last week. He's not 100% a kick-it coach
November 5th, 2022 at 7:44 AM ^
That's also a 55 yard FG man. That's "Go For It" range instead of FG range.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:27 AM ^
Moody hit a 54 yarder, with room to spare. What isn't FG range for him?
November 5th, 2022 at 9:09 AM ^
Not at all bad decisions for Oregon St. to go for it in those situations. Maybe their kicker sucks. Even if he's good, unless he's Moody, there's still a decent chance he misses at least one from those distances. I also generally favor being more aggressive as the underdog.
Having said that, I wonder if the calculus changes that close. Like on the 7 yard line, the field is already very condensed. Harder to convert and easier to kick a FG. At least on the 25 or something you can still threaten fairly deep.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:39 AM ^
Exactly. Going for it is often the correct decision. That doesn't mean it will be a successful play.
November 5th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
Winds were also gusting to 40mph during the game. So going for it wasn't all metrics based even though the ESPN commentator wouldn't shut up about claiming it was.

Unranked team hangs around too long. Ranked team gets beat.
They had the same record and the unranked team was at home and favored by Vegas.

While technically true, UW were the favorites in this game and didn't even end up covering the spread. It wasn't an upset.

This is how Ohio St lost to Oregon last year. Sure, Oregon ran for a lot of yards, but the Buckeyes would have survived had they:
- a) converted on any of their ~4 failed 4th down attempts in scoring territory, or
- b) kicked FGs

Visiting the PNW so decided to take in the game at Husky Stadium. Great setting and for a stadium that was not full still very loud. Penix performed when it counted. Obligatory.
November 5th, 2022 at 4:35 AM ^
Went to my first game there a couple weeks ago and had similar observations... That was the loudest 35-40k crowd I ever heard. Nice stadium also.
November 5th, 2022 at 5:30 AM ^
Nice to see Penix rise to the occasion, and also to do it without a sack is notable.
November 5th, 2022 at 6:32 AM ^
“Without a sack”. Priceless!
November 5th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
One of the best Penix references I’ve seen.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
It's amazing to me that college stadiums at a place like UW aren't always sold out. I grew up in Michigan as a Michigan fan since the very early 70's, and all I've known are sold out games/full stadiums (save for the truly terrible Coke Special's). UCLA boggles my mind...
November 5th, 2022 at 10:20 AM ^
“UCLA boggles my mind...”
Why? That one is an easy explanation, given the ridiculous lack of proximity to campus. I have a relative that went there and the transport from campus to the Rose Bowl (and back) is (or at least was - although I highly doubt it’s changed in the last few years) an experience that the word “awful” doesn’t even approach.
November 5th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
Also I think you have to factor in all the other fun stuff there is to do in LA. It's not like Nebrasks or Iowa where football is the only thing to see on a Saturday.
November 5th, 2022 at 10:36 AM ^
People can spin things however they wish about the Pac-12 and football. I lived out there for a few years and to say the fanbase was apathetic would be understating it.
Not sure I ever even met someone who was interested in going to a football game, let alone anyone who was actually going.
Soccer was more talked about. Soccer!
November 5th, 2022 at 11:21 AM ^
That's painting with a broad brush. Oregon fans are rabid and even Oregon State has a ton of die hard fans despite how bad they have been most of the last 20 years.
November 5th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
Soccer is a fine sport.

The world is a slightly duller place because it it. Missed opportunity.

Yeah. That was a pretty "dull surprise."

Must of had good protection all around him.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:48 AM ^
I wonder how his OL would feel about being nicknamed 'The Condoms'?
November 5th, 2022 at 10:37 AM ^
Probably better than The Morning After Pills.
November 5th, 2022 at 6:48 AM ^
Just take the points.
Sorry, I know we're not supposed to talk about points.
November 5th, 2022 at 6:52 AM ^
How many beers does it take to make a title like that.
November 5th, 2022 at 7:48 AM ^
Hahah I thought the same thing
November 5th, 2022 at 9:11 AM ^
He had me at "eschewing".
November 5th, 2022 at 6:57 AM ^
The delay due to equipment failure seemed to bother Penix and he was not the same after the lights came back on (who among us would be?). Penix had his balls blown around in the crazy wind (who among us wouldn't?) but managed to straighten things out long enough to get the job done.
This is a post about football.
November 5th, 2022 at 7:52 AM ^
No doubt when it counted he rose to the occasion and played long and hard.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:32 AM ^
Things just won't be the same after Penix leaves college.
November 5th, 2022 at 7:11 AM ^
Fantastic thread title. Also, I had UW -4.5, so I'm a bit disappointed in this outcome
November 5th, 2022 at 7:21 AM ^
With the real OSU losing to Washington, Maryland should be ranked this week if they can beat Wisconsin, moving our defeat of them to a ranked win. Crossing fingers.
November 5th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
The loser of the Wake Forest vs NC State game should also drop out of of the rankings taking away a Top 25 win from Clemson.
If you watch the two teams, it's ridiculous to have Clemson ahead of Michigan at this point.
November 5th, 2022 at 11:38 AM ^
That would only be a correction to such a bias ranking last week. Maryland is 26th in SP yet not ranked.
The 4 other ACC teams ‘ranked’ all reside 35 OR LOWER.
How in the hell does 4 teams from the same conference get ranked 15-20 spots higher than SP? Wouldn’t have anything to do the the CFP Chairman being an ACC AD? Hmmmmm
November 5th, 2022 at 7:37 AM ^
There was also a little fracas after the game, which must be a mistake, because doesn’t that only happen in Ann Arbor with the reckless Wolverines?
November 5th, 2022 at 8:04 AM ^
Plus one for scripting a most informative title. Well done. Feel better about our 5 field goals from last week now.
November 5th, 2022 at 8:16 AM ^
You're clearly not a Lions fan if you're just learning how to lose a game by not kicking FG.
November 5th, 2022 at 8:36 AM ^
In this instance, the title does indeed say it all. Well done.

I hear ya, I was happy that Oregon St covered, but I also had them to win outright. Kick the damn FG when you're up 7-0 early in the red zone!

Dang that really helps MSUs resume.
November 5th, 2022 at 10:40 AM ^

November 5th, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
ORG ST should hire Frames. He goes for FGs no matter the score.
November 5th, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
Sure, it sucks for Oregon State but it was a close game. A close game can go down to any number of decisions that didn't work out as hoped.
The game-winning field goal was from the 22 yards out; had Oregon State kicked a field goal earlier and led at that point by three, Washington's last second field goal would have put the game into overtime. Which could also have resulted in a loss.
If Oregon State had kicked both field goals, Washington would have had a fourth down at the five down by six. They'd obviously have gone for it. If they'd scored, they would have won.
(That assumes that they'd ended up in the same situation at the end, which is not a given.)
The loss I had to question was a few years ago when Nebraska beat Oregon 35-32 after Oregon had blown four out of five two-point conversion attempts.
