Man Cave Opinion
I am finally getting to the point where I can start painting the man cave. I have done a few shitty photoshops, but cannot decide what I want. I need all MGOpeeps input. These are 18ft ceilings so a lot of room to work with. Do you like the half-Block M or half winged helmet? Also taking other ideas. I have a huge old air tank pictured that I will also paint. TV and Bar will go on the wall where I paint the logos.
I think the block M is more recognizable, but it might look better if you make it a little bit smaller so you can see the majority or more of the M. The same for the helmet, it seems a little bit too zoomed in, zooming out and you might be able to appreciate it more. This is going to be a sweet space! 18 foot ceilings - nice!
The thing is, the basement formation has the openings of the block M. I was going to follow those lines.

I'd do something like this. You can get large scale vinyl images that function like wall paper. Then, I would photoshop my favorite players into the wall touching the banner (and maybe even my kids in their Michigan jerseys).
This is the way.
WINNER and we want to see the end result.
I’m pretty sure you’re a genius. Such a great idea I might have to steal it in some way.
Man, that's like a man cavern! I finally have my workshop space so I know it can be exciting planning this stuff.
I wish I had more creativity to help you with ideas.
Yes sir, we all dream of this! It's taken 3 years of remodeling the (very old) house to get to this point. Now it's my turn to enjoy it. Congrats on your workshop space!
suggestions: put up a hoop at that end and paint the walls and floor to look like crisler
same idea: but paint the walls and floor to look like the big house.
either way, a giant sound system, plumb hot/cold water in there if not already, and enjoy. neat space.
Great ideas, thanks! It's basically a blank slate to do whatever. I am running electrical and plumbing to wherever I need, but I want to get the design together first. I love other people's ideas!
might be too complex, but something from the game in november might be a winner. or maybe the background can simply be something like the crowd you can see in the background, the colors and blurring shapes, and a scoreboard with 42-27 on it. you know some people are not aware that was the score on november 27th, 2021. in ann arbor. michigan won. some might not know that and your wall would help them.
If I had the money to do this for every special Michigan moment I would. Love the idea! However, I am stuck with being semi artistic and painting a mural.

Know any art students at the local high school who'd be interested in painting a mural in your basement for their college portfolio?
This would be a great public service announcement!

I dunno you can barely see what's happening because of the blizzard like conditions there

I like the space for sure. But there is concrete from floor to ceiling. A bad ass sound system might echo like crazy making for poor sound quality. I am not an audio engineer but maybe some anti-echo things like acoustic panels and even carpet on the floor would help.
Other than that I really don't have any unique ideas. My basement is my man cave and I just did a large framed picture of the Big House, a Michigan Man Cave banner and some other little things that I put on the walls.
WD would have 1000 ideas.

Yep, agreed. That space would be a real acoustic challenge. Only way to tame it (buck$ though) is to hang absorption panels down from the ceiling at irregular angles, different lengths. Carpets and a soft wall hangings, too.
Beautiful space though! Really!

I was just thinking that the block M on the wall could be covered in that M pattern with maize painted anechoic foam. You could probably kill two birds here (preserve the M and acoustic quality at the same time) by buying egg crate anechoic foam from Amazon and stick it up on the wall with some sort of adhesive. That would be sick, like in a good way.
Here is a picture of the foam I am thinking about. Search egg crate anechoic foam at Amazon. There is a description on how you can stick it to a wall in the product description. 3M tape or spray adhesive.
That would work. Don't know how paint would change the absorption qualities, probably not much (if at all). Might look a little funky but I think it would create a really dramatic space! He'd need to let the space air out a looooong time to let the adhesive fumes dissipate but, yeah, good idea.
Carpets too, need carpets to handle sound bouncing off the floor.
I think I have seen those panels in different colors. Maybe they make them in Maize or Blue. We have a recording booth in our house with those and other sound dampening materials for my wife's podcasts so I have hung these before. Here is one example, but I'm colorblind so I'm not sure if the yellow (Maize) is exactly right. I can tell that the blue is to bright/light shade.

Excellent color match. Works!

The blue they have on the same listing not so much, though
Ugh. Perhaps a blue wall hanging or carpet behind the foam - creating the blue image background while still cutting down on the sound bounces?
I like the most recent one I look at. Hope that helps.
Looks more like a Man-sion
I agree, make the BLock M smaller so you can see more of it.
I'd want to see the whole icon. The helmet doesn't do it for me.
I agree, but I don't think everyone realizes the shape of the structure. Maybe this clears it up. More like a 'V' shape, which could be made into the Block M.
Maybe incorporate a smaller helmet along with a more distinct block M

If the bar is going in front of that wall anyway, shrink the M and elevate it so you can see the whole thing. No one will care about the shape of the carve-outs and it will still look cool since it will be 12 feet tall. Also think about where your backbar will go and what could end up blocked if you want any shelving, sink, etc. back there.
Awesome space - wish I could do something similar.

Graphic designer here. My advice is don’t get hung up on the cool idea of letting the shape of your structure dictate the artistic design. Doing that chops up the block M and just obscures it.
If I were you, I would paint a giant block M floor to ceiling. You have the right instinct to use the massive amount of wall space and you are right not to go too small. Just make sure you get the whole logo in there.
one trick you can and should use is to use or borrow a video projector and project the logo onto the wall, then trace it. That way, you get the proportions correct and it will look very sharp when finished. Also, paint the Maize M first. It’s easier to go from light colors to dark colors. And consider using a recommended (dark colored) primer before laying down the blue paint. This will help ensure that the blue isn’t too light and that you only need to use a single coat of the blue paint.
Good luck and I’m sure it will look great when you’re finished!
Great insight!

I'm not creative, nor do I have any input....but I'd love to see the end result!

You own Gustavo Fring’s meth lab?

Kept thinking that this looked more like a loading dock than a basement. Underground meth lab also works. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Underrated comment!
I would move that chair out of the middle of the room. Maybe put it in the corner.
Unless you plan on adding a 120 inch or better projection system, that's not a man cave. Your Tv options are most definitely pre-teen.
Projection is definitely an option with the space. Not sure I how high def they are these days. Do you recommend them? Bar will bring everyone closer to the wall, so not sure what the best option is.
Pictures of screaming UM coaches, past and present.
I like the block M and the way it fits the space. But you have a huge canvas to fill with 18 ft walls! I think the M will look best when it's the background theme not the feature. If there's a bar and TV on that wall the eyeballs will be up closer, and up close the M may not even be noticed or recognized. You might consider also throwing up some fatheads, a mural of the big house or locker room or something, giant poster, etc.
You can always tape off outlines or tape cardboard to the wall to get a feel for scale and layout.
What are the white squares on the wall? Access doors?
Smaller M
This is my wife and I's Michigan Fan Attic.
Very nice! I love everything about it. Good job brother!

Don't take this wrong but can I live in your attic? 😂

Awesome. I could use some company up here, but don't tell them (I didn't ask and I don't think they know yet).

Dude. That is fucking awesome. I so love this thing. I wish I can do this. My wife is a sparty fan and I don't think I can tolerate even a picture of sparty thing in the house and I am sure she won't let me do just UM stuff. Nice touch on the toilet :)

Is that a commercial building?
sweet space
I'm curious to see the full structure also.
August 4th, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
Yeah I can’t seem to get past what is behind the main walls there. There is a board covering one side and nothing on the other.
August 3rd, 2022 at 10:25 PM ^
Block M for sure. That's a huge space, dang!
