See, even occasionally beating your rival doesn't save you!
Stay the course, Warde!
December 13th, 2020 at 6:29 PM ^
He is. He's signing Harbaugh to an extension.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:36 PM ^
He would be very high on my list.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:33 PM ^
Holy shit I'm sure glad you aren't the AD!
December 13th, 2020 at 3:37 PM ^
I hope you mean offensive coordinator
December 13th, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
As an OC? Sure. As a head coach he's been demonstrably worse than Harbaugh in his high-profile job. After his first year, he never lost fewer than 4 games. He lost 5 or more in most seasons.
December 13th, 2020 at 4:31 PM ^
He plays in a harder conference, let's be honest here. Give Harbaugh one extra loss each year and they look pretty identical except that Malzahn has beaten his marquee rival 3 times. So he's not "demonstrably worse", although he is probably not worth consideration.
December 13th, 2020 at 4:38 PM ^
Michigan fans lost their damn minds when Harbaugh went 8-5 with the youngest team in the country in 2017. Malzahn goes 8-5 or worse in most years.
December 13th, 2020 at 7:37 PM ^
At least Malzahn has a few accomplishments at Auburn. Can’t say the same for Harbaugh.
December 13th, 2020 at 8:43 PM ^
you were downvoted to Columbus, but don't worry, i think you're totally right, i'd be thrilled if we hired Malzahn
December 13th, 2020 at 2:37 PM ^
Just read that, wow.

CC: Gus Malzahn

No real need.

Can't fire a coach in a weird pandemic year!!!!
December 13th, 2020 at 3:11 PM ^
But he was 3-5 against Alabama and made a national championship game, so they should have kept him right? Let’s pick a storyline and stick to it
December 13th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
We would have erected a statue to a coach with those notches on their belt.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:39 PM ^
If we move on from Harbaugh this is a big problem. I was operating on the assumption we’d be the best job available this cycle. Now there’s a job as good or better and open earlier, hard to imagine we don’t get second choice.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:42 PM ^
Auburn too!
December 13th, 2020 at 2:42 PM ^
Michigan is a better job than Auburn. The competition level outside of Bama is still higher at Auburn.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:57 PM ^
The Auburn administration lets its coach do what is necessary to compete with their big rival. Michigan's does not. (But still wants the same results.)
December 13th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
As long as posters keeping pushing this false narrative the school’s administration is preventing Harbaugh from being successful at Michigan, I will keep challenging anyone to list at least two things the administration has actually said or done to support your claim. Have at it.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:42 PM ^
There have been numerous claims of Schlissil blocking athletes from being admitted and numerous claims of Schlissil not giving 2 shits about sports. He received a vote of no confidence from the faculty in the fall. Nobody wants him there and he doesn't want to be there according to John Bacon.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:55 PM ^
I find the first hard to believe. The guy is basically the CEO of a multi-billion dollar enterprise. I seriously doubt he has the time or inclination to get involved in the individual admission decisions of the football. Where are these claims, and for which players?
As for not giving a shit about sports . . . ok? He may not like or care about it, but I'm failing to see how that translates into impeding the team.
The no confidence vote was w/r/t the reopening plan. He's otherwise been a great president.
December 13th, 2020 at 4:03 PM ^
1) Athletics may not be high on Schlissel’s priority list. But he handled it just fine when you had the protests over Brandon
2) The University president has a say in which football players are admitted? That doesn’t seem credible at all
December 13th, 2020 at 9:03 PM ^
The no confidence vote had to do with non-sports issues. To the president of an elite school, football should be an interest but not anywhere near a priority. It’s a university, not a sports organization. If he blocked athletes, presumably it’s because they weren’t anywhere near qualified to attend the school. You’d prefer that the president just let in anyone the football coach wants. That’s the definition of backwards-ass and not at all what a top school should stand for.
December 13th, 2020 at 4:59 PM ^
this is so easy. here's three reasons michigan doesn't play on the same field as auburn.
- admissions requirements are about...oh, a thousand percent higher at michigan vs. auburn.
- players have to go to actual classes.
- the michigan athletic department doesn't look the other way when bag men are clearly involved.
you can say that the administration hasn't "said or done" anything to indicate these requirements, which is true, i guess. but there's no question they exist. and i'm not sure that *any* administration - including auburn's - "says" things, anyway.
December 13th, 2020 at 5:42 PM ^
The admission requirements of the school do not apply to football players...they never have and they never will. Please stop saying this. If Mario Manningham could get admitted nearly anyone can unless you're Demar Dorsey who couldnt get admitted to Florida State.
December 13th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
does the admissions department accommodate athletes, and admit some athletes that wouldn’t otherwise get in? of course.
does the admissions department tell the athletic department that some recruits will not even get that accommodation, and to not pursue them? also yes.
‘if you think the coaching staffs recruit players without confirming them with the admissions department, i don’t know what to tell you.
December 13th, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
Admissions standards are NOT at all the reason Michigan is 2-5 an has not won the conference under Harbaugh.
December 13th, 2020 at 9:32 PM ^
it’s a good thing i didn’t say it was, then!
December 13th, 2020 at 10:06 PM ^
It’s well understood that the FB program can’t admit everyone they want. it’s been reported that they can admit a player or two each year with marginal grades. The rest may not be at typical Michigan admissions standard, but need above average grades.
It’s also well understood that Florida State has a great criminal justice program.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:19 PM ^
Since 2010 Auburn has won a NC and finished runner up in another by only 3 points, has 2 SEC titles and is respectable 4-7 against its national powerhouse arch rival.
But, sure, UM is a better job.
December 13th, 2020 at 4:34 PM ^
Yup, an 18-year-old recruit was born in 2002. Those kids have no memory of Michigan ever being elite.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:44 PM ^
I'd have a tough time imagining Auburn is any better. Worst part of coaching at Michigan is playing Ohio State in a rivalry every year. Is playing Alabama in a rivalry game any better?
Plus, it seems like the top 2 choices are Campbell and Fickell. Both are Midwest guys, so I could see that being an advantage for us.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:10 PM ^
Fair enough but if you’re Matt Campbell and Auburn offers to double your salary this week, are you sitting and waiting to see if Michigan matches? Which is another reason beyond crootin that warde and Jim need to pull the trigger one way or another now not after the Iowa game.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:27 PM ^
Would a guy with a midwestern background really be interested in coaching in the SEC in a state where the school is probably second fiddle to Alabama?
December 13th, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
I know they're not in the same conference, but Iowa State is definitely second fiddle to Iowa.
December 13th, 2020 at 5:43 PM ^
He also took the Iowa State job coming from Toledo. He didnt have many offers and Iowa State was his ticket into the P5. Now he’s a guy with a solid P5 team and hes got options between the NFL and top college jobs. Now he’s in a scenario where he can be more selective and not choose a job where the program is second fiddle.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:23 PM ^
Considering Auburn is 10-10 vs Alabama in that same time period that UM is 2-17 (should be 2-18) I’d say playing Alabama in a rivalry game is considerably easier than OSU.
December 13th, 2020 at 7:51 PM ^
Gosh I sure wish Schlissel would stop meddling around. He’s certainly cost us OSU*. That guy is the worst. This is not an excuse it’s totally true and totally real. He also gives the pregame speeches and hands players melatonin so we start and finish games completely flat.
*and PSU, MSU, every bowl game except 1, Iowa 2016, and Wisconsin.
