OT - What Sporting Event Would you have like to Seen in Person?
Just saw this topic elsewhere, so I thought I would bring it here b/c it appeared to be interesting.
What Sporting Event Would you have like to Seen in Person?
Miracle on Ice?
Ali vs Frazier?
A Fielding H. Yost coached football game?
etc.....

Easy. Roman gladiator matches. F'ed up in reality, but there's a kind of morbid curiosity there.
November 10th, 2020 at 6:06 PM ^
I’m with you. Certainly would be tough for people of today to watch, but 2,000 years ago, it was sport and part of daily life. It didn’t really phase people.
I can’t say with any certainty that I’d be able to stomach watching a full match, but I’d certainly be willing to try.

+1 ... I applaud your self-awareness and transparency.

A win over OSU... any one at this point will do
November 10th, 2020 at 4:34 PM ^
My thoughts exactly. I've seen a handful of losses to OSU, ranging from excruciatingly close (2013, 2017), to excruciatingly lopsided (2015, 2019). Some day before the world ends I'll see a win over OSU in person, but at this point I'd just take seeing a win over OSU on TV.

Sunday at the 2005 Masters. Tiger on the 16th hole to be specific.
November 10th, 2020 at 7:46 PM ^
Would have loved to see Jon rahm on the 16th hole in person today. Look it up. Absolutely incredible.
November 10th, 2020 at 8:21 PM ^
Holy cow. That was incredible!

I would have loved to see Gale Sayers 6 td game. Maybe Tiger’s first Masters too.

1951 Dodgers v. Giants which featured Bobby Thompson's game winning home run, "the shot heard round the world" and the famous radio call "The Giants Win the Pennant! The Giants Win the Pennant! The Don DeLillo novel "Underworld" starts with a wonderfully fantastical description of this game and how all of New York was swept up in the excitement of that day.
November 11th, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
That very famous radio call was made by Russ Hodges. Lesser know fact, Ernie Harwell who worked for the Giants then, made the call on a TV broadcast.

Toss up between 1984 Tigers World Series clincher, or 1989 B-Ball national championship game
November 10th, 2020 at 7:02 PM ^
Nice dude! Look at that face value....$25. Unreal. That must have been amazing
November 10th, 2020 at 7:07 PM ^
we were right behind Larry Herndon in left field ... tickets were free from my wife’s coworker who was a Seventh Day Adventist and couldn’t go because it was the sabbath.

I had to see about a girl.

Hagler-Hearns
November 10th, 2020 at 6:11 PM ^
?
Caesars Palace. That first round was AWESOME.
November 10th, 2020 at 7:46 PM ^
It might have been one of the greatest rounds in boxing history, but as a Hearns fan it was tough to watch.
Hearns needed to fight Leonard and box Hagler, but instead he tried to box Leonard and tried to fight Hagler, thereby allowing his opponents to use their respective strengths.
November 10th, 2020 at 8:17 PM ^
That is a succinct and astute point.
November 10th, 2020 at 10:42 PM ^
It was a great fight (certainly one of the best rounds of all time - maybe the best). If Hearns hadn't broken his right hand in the first round the fight would have been even better. His right-hand power was normally his main weapon but he had to rely on his jab after that.
November 10th, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
I thought this was going to be a question about events that occurred in 2020 with no or few fans.
NBA Finals Game Whatever when Duncan went off. Was that Game 5 maybe?
November 10th, 2020 at 4:27 PM ^
Cubs-Indians Game 7 but I spent it with my kids so not sure that's my answer if they couldn't be with me.
November 10th, 2020 at 4:31 PM ^
Pretty sure you can make whatever rules you want for this game.
November 10th, 2020 at 4:34 PM ^
In that case, I want to see the Tyson -Secretariat fight.
November 10th, 2020 at 10:53 PM ^
Secretariat winning the Triple Crown at Belmont by 31 lengths. That would have been cool to be at. Secretariats winning time still holds the American record for a mile and half on dirt.
November 11th, 2020 at 11:26 AM ^
I was there and it was a scene unrivaled by any I have ever seen. The roar from the grandstand as Big Red came down the stretch was unmatched by any I have ever heard. People were tearing up, including me. Strangers were hugging each other. That beautiful horse had a hold on the American public like none before or since. I feel so privileged to have witnessed it. It was so loud you couldn't even hear Chic Anderson's iconic call: "(Secretariat) is moving like a tremendous machine!"

1986 Masters. Jack's last major on the regular tour.
Also 1999 Ryder Cup with the large US comeback on Sunday.
November 10th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
Michigan at Notre Dame 1978
November 10th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
1968 World Series Tigers @Cardinals game 7.
There's nothing like winning the deciding game of a Championship series, and there no Championship series that's ever meant as much to me as that one did to the then 13-yr old me, especially when I kept the faith even when Detroit trailed 3 games to 1.
November 11th, 2020 at 5:42 AM ^
I was almost 8, and watched it on B&W TV with Curt Gowdy announcing. When Freehan caught McCarver's foul popup I screamed my head off.
I'd add three more events to this one:
Miracle on Ice.
Bobby Thompson's HR in 1951.
Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics. (Not that I'm in a big hurry to visit Nazi Germany, but he sure would have been something to see.)
November 10th, 2020 at 4:34 PM ^
Ali vs Frazier 1970 in MSG...Both had a legit claim to Title.Ali was banned for awhile for draft evasion.Saw the fight on closed circuit tv at Crisler.Crowd was 90% pro Ali and very enthusiastic.
November 11th, 2020 at 4:25 PM ^
I was there too, though I think the crowd was more evenly divided, maybe 60-40 Ali. I also was at Crisler for Hearns-Sugar Ray Leonard. That crowd was definitely 90 percent Hearns.
November 10th, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
Malice at the Palace.
November 10th, 2020 at 6:51 PM ^
In case you’re not joking: I was there, baby. Was on the way out, but stuck around. Feared slightly for my safety because I had a maize n blue hoodie (not Michigan, just those colors) that just so happened to be Pacers colors basically. Got outta there fine and had some fun stories at the bar later as we watched it on tv the rest of the night. Pretty crazy though.
November 10th, 2020 at 7:04 PM ^
Fun Fact: if you kept your ticket . It's worth 100-500 bucks depending on condition.
November 10th, 2020 at 7:28 PM ^
That really sucks because I was there and only five rows off the floor, luckily on the opposite side of the floor from the incident. I have no clue where my ticket is though and either does my current wife who was also at the game. We didnt even know each other then but it was funny talking about our experiences there.
November 10th, 2020 at 9:10 PM ^
Oh man. I used to keep stubs when I was younger. No idea where it would be these days.
November 10th, 2020 at 10:44 PM ^
Wow, really? I'm pretty sure I still have mine! Not sure I would sell it but that is very good to know...
November 10th, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
Michigan beating MSU and not fucking up the punt. I would have like to have been there in person for that endingz not the one experienced.
November 10th, 2020 at 7:19 PM ^
The only thing I could take solace in with that game is the jackass MSU fan in front of me and his family that left with 45 seconds to go.
Go Blue!!!!
November 10th, 2020 at 9:39 PM ^
They might've just gone to the top of the stairs to watch so that they could race out and beat the insane crowd. We've done that a couple of times (@ Minnesota 2015, Notre Dame 2009, @Notre Dame 2010, Notre Dame 2011, which we came back down to celebrate for).
November 10th, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
The Rose Bowl. Really any Rose Bowl, but preferably one with Michigan in it if that ever happens again.
Also the World Series, any world series, but preferably one with the Yankees in it.
Night game at Death Valley (both LSU and Clemson)
any game at Wrigley
I'd like to see a Knicks game where the team is competitive but that's a dream
November 10th, 2020 at 4:51 PM ^
I'd rather see Clemson and LSU square off at the real Death Valley in Nevada under the scorching hot ?. With real Tigers roaming the sidelines.
November 10th, 2020 at 8:42 PM ^
FYI. Real Death Valley is in California.
November 11th, 2020 at 1:16 PM ^
Good catch.
I definitely flunked yesterday's geography quiz.
You apparently flunked learning colors.
