Rational Takes - Who do we get?
I'm a longer term season ticket holder (back when you could actually go to games and things like that). I'm upset with this outcome and you too are probably upset with this outcome.
Rational takes then: who do we get if the Harbaugh experiment hasn't worked? Looking back at RichRod, Hoke and now Harbaugh (and I acknowledge the this team is a lot better off than Hoke era) but not good enough.
So who do we get?
Do we sell our souls and get Urban. Honestly, on this day, I think I'm willing.

"If the Harbaugh experiment hasn't worked."
It failed.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:18 PM ^
Urban is not coming.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
Both these things can be true.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
You lead off your “rational takes” post with a suggestion we get urban meyer? Makes sense
October 31st, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
I mean it’s either us or USC. I’ll take the 50/50. Dude could become the GOAT if he were to win w UF OSU and UM
October 31st, 2020 at 5:26 PM ^
He’s not coming to Michigan so I guess it’s USC
October 31st, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
Mel tucker
October 31st, 2020 at 4:01 PM ^
I don't know. Are there institutional constraints that will handcuff the next coach? Like players having to attend class, is that harbaugh, or is that no matter who is there?
October 31st, 2020 at 4:05 PM ^
“Institutional constraints” don’t seem to affect Mel and MSU. They just kicked our ass.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:40 PM ^
Great point. Im not in the making excuses for Harbaugh group at all. I guess i was really just thinking what would scare off top candidates?
October 31st, 2020 at 4:46 PM ^
That’s because they have no constraints. They dropped players off from jail to practice.
October 31st, 2020 at 7:25 PM ^
F outta here with the attending class bs! This excuse making and enabling doesn’t help. Sick of hearing about OSU players not attending class while they have more academic all conference players than we do. Sick of all the excuses. The constraints are the arrogance that surrounds a portion of the “Michigan Man” mantra. We are getting out-recruited, out-worked and out coached. We won’t win simply because we are “UM”. If we prioritized excellence Harbaugh would already be gone. We recruit mediocre enough without also having the only coach in the conference who is not under contract past next year. They haven’t extended the contract because he is mediocre and they haven’t had the balls to pull the trigger because he is a “Michigan Man”. End rant.
November 1st, 2020 at 10:42 AM ^
I 100% agree. We need to get away from the Bo lineage. We need someone to run the program like it should be. Bring in fresh ideas. We have the money, we just need to get the rest of the university to understand that. I think after the Ass kicking osu will put on us, it will start to make sense to them.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:02 PM ^
I dont give a shit who we get. Maybe just someone who can answer questions coherently and doesnt embarrass the shit out of the entire fanbase. And someone who recruits normal and doesnt leave big fucking gaps all over the field.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:02 PM ^
Michigan probably needs a cultural rehaul in this program, from top to bottom.
And by this, no one with Michigan ties, not one. Michigan needs a high-energy, elite recruiter, because this is what college football is going towards.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:04 PM ^
Ding ding ding right answer here
October 31st, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
This. If Bo or “Michigan Man” is mentioned at any point in the interview process you gone.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:09 PM ^
Shit at this point, I'd be very happy with Luke Fickell. He's honestly the best option out there for them. Dude can coach and has built a winner at Cincy. With Michigan's resources they can hire whoever he wants as asst coaches and recruiters.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:40 PM ^
Fickell is an OSU guy through and through. He’s not coming here
October 31st, 2020 at 4:48 PM ^
He makes $3.4M at Cincy. Give him $6.5 or so to come here and that much in an assistant coaching salary pool and he might rethink some loyalties.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:50 PM ^
He might. I’ve seen internet rumblings that he wasn’t happy when he left OSU. For years he thought he was the heir apparent for the head coaching job there and didn’t get it.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:41 PM ^
Your "rumblings" are wrong. Fickell isn't coming to Michigan, trust me, nor is Urban Meyer. As posted in another thread, Michigan would have a better chance hiring Ryan Day away from OSU (and there's zero chance of that) than getting Urban Meyer to even say the word Michigan. Go get a "Michigan Man," they're the best, right? Maybe Desmond Howard will take the job... he's most certainly stupid enough.
October 31st, 2020 at 6:01 PM ^
I feel sorry for you. You must not have much of a life.
October 31st, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
I don't trust you. Particularly after that nonsensical post.
October 31st, 2020 at 9:15 PM ^
"Fickell is an OSU guy through and through, he's not coming here".
You'd think our fans would be fucking smarter than this. Gary Moeller was a fucking OSU captain.
November 1st, 2020 at 1:15 AM ^
What makes you think he is one of our fans?
October 31st, 2020 at 5:35 PM ^
I get it. Michigan lost but if you think Fickel is an upgrade from Harbaugh you need to put the pipe down. 8-4 would be Michigan’s ceiling under Happy Gilmore.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:13 PM ^
Congratulations, you've hired Rich Rod again. Try again
October 31st, 2020 at 4:25 PM ^
he wasn't a recruiter at WVU
October 31st, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
Refusing to hire another outside guy because one failed is like never dating again because you saw your ex-gf sleeping with a plumber.
Let's get over it and make a change.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:58 PM ^
Especially when that plumber is probably an OSU Fan.
October 31st, 2020 at 9:33 PM ^
Especially when that cooler salesman is probably an OSU Fan.
Fixed it for ya.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:02 PM ^
too soon. . .
and it wasn't the plumber. . . it was the orkin guy
October 31st, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
Hiring an outsider failed once with rich rod. So it will fail every time?
I mean we’ve hired two insiders in a row that have failed....
October 31st, 2020 at 6:17 PM ^
What cracks me up is people seem to forget Bo was an outsider. No ties to Michigan whatsoever. That is not an endorsement for another Bo acolyte either.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:15 PM ^
I think the rational take is we really missed our #1 CB that opted out today.
And by this, no one with Michigan ties, not one. Michigan needs a high-energy, elite recruiter, because this is what college football is going towards.
The problem with that is, none of the proven elite recruiters would be interested in UM. That list is short...Meyer, Saban, Sweeney, Smart, & maybe Fisher. None of them are coming to UM. There is no savior for UM...no guaranteed guy like with OSU & Meyer that can come in and win immediately at an elite level. UM has to chose between a good, but not great JH and the unknown. You can take an overhaul approach. Maybe you'll get Rich Rod 2.0. Maybe you'll get Dabo Sweeney. But, you're going to have to pick between a guaranteed good thing that will never satisfy the fan base or take a shot at greatness and possible get worse. I'm thinking they probably keep sticking it out with JH until he's ready for a change, which is probably another 2-3 years unless you hits the lottery.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:05 PM ^
You don't need a proven national recruiter, you just need a young energetic coach who understands the importance of recruiting and who has recruited above their weight.
October 31st, 2020 at 6:26 PM ^
That would be PJ Fleck but we just beat the stuffing out of his team and although his recruiting is off-the-charts good, his coaching seems to be just, um, meh.
October 31st, 2020 at 11:38 PM ^
Their recruiting isn't good.
October 31st, 2020 at 11:44 PM ^
He is recruiting well above their historical average.
November 1st, 2020 at 10:40 AM ^
That’s not even true either. Mario cristobal is an elite recruiter for example. Justin Wilcox is recruiting well and looking pretty good at cal.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
This is it. I have been saying this since 2017, there is a cancer of a culture in the program and it will not change until someone outside is hired. Should have hired Dan Mullen, fuck me.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
We don’t just need to hire someone from the outside. We’ve tried that before with Rich Rod. That’s not enough. We need to also expel ALL of the “old guard” and get them out from being involved in the program. You can’t hire an outsider and stick him in the middle of an old regime and expect things to work out. You have to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:00 PM ^
I’ll take Fickell in a heartbeat. The Harbaugh experiment is over. He failed. He needs to get the fuck outta AA now.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:58 PM ^
Going towards?.. that has been college football for 30 years man.
It's dumb to worry about Michigan ties or no ties...it's completely fucking irrelevant to whether a candidate is right or not.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:03 PM ^
Urban Meyer isn’t coming here. Wtf are you smoking?
October 31st, 2020 at 4:03 PM ^
Eh I'd rather win 8+ games every year than go back to RR and Hoke
October 31st, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
8+ wins but lose the only games that matter? No thanks.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:15 PM ^
Because RR and Hoke beat OSU so many times?? It's not like getting a worse coach is going to magically improve our record against one of the top 3 programs in college football over the last two decades
October 31st, 2020 at 4:18 PM ^
Why the fuck are you talking about OSU? We are now 1-3 against MSU at home.
Yeah, so much better than Hoke
