Offer goes out to Jace Howard
August 14th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
I'm told the staff has scouted him extensively
August 14th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
Awesome to see, as the son of a coach (my head varsity football coach) it is so special to have that opportunity.
August 14th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
Well, that will be the most awkward second-place finish yet.
August 14th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
We better break out the bag man.
August 15th, 2019 at 11:17 AM ^
I heard a rumor that coach is already paying for a house for his mom
August 14th, 2019 at 10:33 PM ^
Damn, that was brilliant
August 14th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
Take it kid, start the dominoes
August 14th, 2019 at 8:39 PM ^
Can a man get a link. I assume this is Desmond Howards son being offered for the Cross Country team but some might be more clueless than I.
August 14th, 2019 at 8:42 PM ^
Nope. No one as clueless as you.
August 15th, 2019 at 12:59 AM ^
More clever sarcasm replied to with dull crudeness. /the internet
August 15th, 2019 at 8:37 AM ^
Sarcasm? I suppose so. Clever? Not so much.
August 14th, 2019 at 8:41 PM ^
TL/DR
August 14th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
Fab 5 part deaux in the making?

Redux

Jace Howard is unranked by 247 Sports. Juwan Howard is never going to beat Duke if he doesn't successfully recruit 5-star players.

August 14th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
Best offer is Dayton. Similar to Jay Harbaugh, he probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for his father.
August 14th, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
I mean Beilein once extended an offer to a skinny bean pole kid who had committed to Ohio U.(Below Dayton on the basketball scale) and that kid Caris LeVert is now on the verge of all-star status in the NBA.
August 15th, 2019 at 2:50 AM ^
Lol are people not satisfied with what Jay Harbaugh has done? Since he's become RB coach, we've seen the emergence of Karan Higdon, brought in Christian Turner, seeing Tru Wilson become a legit option, brought in Zach Charbonnet (and Eric Gray until Tennessee gave him the bag) and seem to be in a pretty solid place for the future of the RB position
August 15th, 2019 at 7:45 AM ^
He also did okay with the TE group, and is a good recruiter. At this point, you'd think the nepo crowd would be over it. But noooooo... Demonstrated success will never be good enough for the tin foil hat crowd.
August 15th, 2019 at 8:39 PM ^
Sometimes being from a big football family actually helps you become a good coach. Who would have thought?!?!
August 15th, 2019 at 12:02 PM ^
All of those backs are average at best. None of them will be anything better than that. They are not the type that can take a game over. Charbonnet should be a special player but yet to be seen. So no I’m not that impressed with Jay Harbaugh.
Go Blue!!
August 15th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
Karan Higdon was an "average" back???
August 15th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Why would anyone downvote this?
Is it not the truth?
Nepotism.
August 14th, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
It's a nice story. But I hope this is obligatory and Michigan doesn't miss out on a top player because they're one scholarship short.
August 14th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
It's really not much of a risk. They've had an unused scholarship for a number of years running, two for this season. Beilein took a lot of players with worse offer sheets as well as leaving a spot open.
If Juwan can really fill up the rest of his roster with top ranked players, we'll all be ecstatic
August 14th, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
There's a chance we end up with a 6 man 2020 class. So I doubt we fill up and miss out on someone. Juwan isn't going to have a Duke or Kentucky class with 5 guys in the top 20.
August 15th, 2019 at 3:36 AM ^
Well, I heard this kid's Dad played D1 & was in the Association.
Also has a brother who may be quite a prospect!
Start those building blocks!
August 15th, 2019 at 6:47 AM ^
Just to entertain this question... as an employee of the university, are Juwann’s children offered free tuition? If so, could Jace walk on to preserve a scholarship?
August 15th, 2019 at 7:39 AM ^
Some kids don’t want a free handout. If he’s good enough to earn a scholarship, give him a scholarship. Plus, I’m sure there are restrictions that walk-on’s Have that scholarship players don’t.
August 15th, 2019 at 7:56 AM ^
No.
University employees (including faculty) do NOT get free tuition for their children.
August 14th, 2019 at 9:27 PM ^
We put the M in nepotism! Kidding- happy to have him and something tells me he won’t need a scholarship...
August 14th, 2019 at 9:39 PM ^
Just shows that Howard is willing to go the extra mile to win. Beilein never slept with any recruits’ moms at Michigan.
August 14th, 2019 at 11:13 PM ^
This was my primary JB complaint. Just ahead of autobench.
He did it at West Virginia!
August 15th, 2019 at 6:14 AM ^
I keep expecting him to trip over that cord every time I see that.
August 14th, 2019 at 10:54 PM ^
Give Juwan a $60k a year raise and have the kid walk on to save a scholarship. #SECd
August 14th, 2019 at 11:07 PM ^
Juwan is worth > $100 million and earns a salary of $2 million p.a.
i don’t think he needs a raise to pay in-state tuition
August 14th, 2019 at 11:12 PM ^
This isn't a joke at all. Why aren't they doing this?
August 14th, 2019 at 11:09 PM ^
Random question: Are there special exceptions for coaches whose sons they recruit re: recruiting violations?? I mean, if Juwan pays for Jace’s meals, that can’t possibly count as some type of infraction, can it?! Kinda dumb question but I’m genuinely curious if anyone knows
August 14th, 2019 at 11:12 PM ^
Is the reason Jace is offered a scholarship so that he can say he’s a scholarship athlete? Seems like the Howard boys should just walk on, no? Didn’t Doug McDermott do this?
August 15th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
I'm not sure what the rules are exactly.
Doug did do this, but he gave it to a guy who was already on the team
I remember it was actually tough for Andre Drummond to do this for his scrub teammate, so it may be a case by case kind of thing (ie. Jace may be able to walk on, but Jett might now be able to)
August 14th, 2019 at 11:25 PM ^
Yes they have exceptions. They can take care of their kids.
They do have to watch their kid at AAU events and then immediately leave the gym. Jim B at Syracuse had to do it.
August 14th, 2019 at 11:31 PM ^
does that make Christmas at the howard house into one big impermissible benefits derby?
would the NCAA buy the 'not me, it was santa' excuse?
August 15th, 2019 at 2:42 AM ^
Does Jalen Rose have a son of similar age? How about Webber, King and Jackson? Let's go all the way with this........offer them all
August 15th, 2019 at 2:44 AM ^
I'm good with Jace being brought in, but using a scholarship on him doesn't seem to make such sense to me. He could easily be brought in as a walk on and still be a contributor, but Juwan could easily pay his tuition as a university employee. But using a scholarship on him in such a key recruiting year doesn't seem wise
August 15th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
Wow, I think that could actually be done but it would appear super-duper shady.
August 15th, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
How would it be shady? Happened with Doug McDermott at Creighton and it makes perfectly logical sense to do so if it saves a scholarship spot. Really don't see how it's bad at all
August 15th, 2019 at 7:35 AM ^
This is extremely smart to offer him. Regardless of star status he has the blood and the opportunity to become a legit d1 high major talent later on. More importantly though his friends are the best players in the country and it can certainly help with some of those 5 star types.
August 15th, 2019 at 8:07 AM ^
If we finish second for this kid I'm going to lose my mind.
August 15th, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
Did we even make his top 5?
